Louis have identified a gene that is required for proper development of the mouse ear, providing clues to deafness. In humans, this gene is known as FGF20. “When we inactivated(阻止活动)FGF20, we saw they were alive and healthy, ”says senior author David M. Ornitz, Professor of Developmental Biology. “But then we figured out that they had absolutely no ability to hear. ”The results show that disabling the gene causes a loss of outer hair cell, a special type of sensory cell in the ear responsible for amplifying(扩大)sound. While about two-thirds of the outer hair cells were missing in mice without FGF20, the number of inner hair cells, the cells responsible for transmitting the amplified signals to the brain, appeared normal.“This is the first evidence that inner and outer hair cells develop independen tly of one another, ”says first author Sung-Ho, PhD, research associate. “This is important because most age-related deafness and hearing loss caused by noise are due to the loss of outer hair cells. ”As such, Ornitz and Huh believe that FGF20 signaling will be a required step toward the goal of regenerating outer hair cells in mammals, incapable of hearing restoration. The FGF20 gene stands for one member of a family of proteins known as fibroblast(纤维组织母细胞)growth factors. In general, members of this family are known to play important and broad roles in embryonic(胚胎的)development, tissue maintenance and wound healing.Ornitz and his colleagues found that FGF20 signaling must occur on or before the 14th day of the embryo’s development to produce a normal inner ear. Even if FGF20 signaling occurred on the 15th day or later, the inner ear still did not develop properly. “In mice, the cells that can become outer hair cells must be exposed to the FGF20 protein at an early stage, ”Ornitz says. “After embryonic day 14, it doesn’t matter if they see the protein. It’s too late for them to become outer hair cells. ”46. After FGF20 was inactivated in mice, they.A. were not able to walk any moreB. didn’t appear abnormal immediatelyC. died without any symptoms soonD. saw an increase of outer hair cells47. According to the study, inner hair cells.A. are not affected by the absence of FGF20B. are responsible for regenerating soundC. will be missing if there isn’t FGF20D. have only been found in mice so far48. The underlined word“regenerating”in Para. 5 can be replaced by“”.A. reducingB. fightingC. preventingD. reproducing49. What can we learn from the passage?A. Mammals are capable of restoring hearing themselves.B. Age-related deafness may be cured with FGF20 signaling.C. Most deafness among people is caused by the loss of inner hair cells.D. To generate outer hair cells, cells must meet the FGF20 protein on day14.50. What is the passage mainly about?A. Why people become deaf.B. How to cure deafness.C. A new discovery about the gene FGF20.D. How the ear works.PartⅢWriting(45 marks)Section A(10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.Renewable energy is natural energy that can be used repeatedly and will never run out.Renewable energy comes from natural processes. Renewable energy has various forms. It can come directly from the sun, the ocean, or heat deep within the earth.Renewable energy is also known as green or clean energy, because the process of complete change does not cause the emission(排放)of greenhouse gas, which is harmful to the environment.Renewable energy sources include solar energy, wind energy, geothermal(地热的)energy(from the inside of the earth), ocean energy, hydropower(水力发电), natural gas, tide power, wave power and so on.Renewable energy can be used without using it up. There is no greenhouse gas emission, no pollution emission—no contribution to global warming. It is healthy and environmentally friendly. All forms of renewable energy are expensive. This is because it is a new technology and has extremely large capital cost. But as time goes on and technologies develop, renewable energy generally gets cheaper, while mineral fuels generally get more expensive.Renewable energy can be used for power generation, hot water, space heating, transport fuels and so on. But it is difficult to generate the quantities of electricity that are as large as those produced traditionally. Soif we use renewable energy, we will need to build more energy facilities. The best solution is to have a balance of many different power sources.Renewable energy often relies on the weather for its source of power. Hydro generators need rain to fill dams to supply flowing water and solar collectors need sunshine to collect heat and make electricity. This can be unpredictable.Section B(10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage. How we look and how we appear to others probably worry us more when we are in our teens or early twenties than at any other time in our life. Few of us are content to accept ourselves as we are, and few are brave enough to ignore the trends of fashion. Most fashion magazines or TV advertisements try to persuade us that we should dress in a certain way or behave in a certain manner. If we do, they tell us, we will be able to meet new people with confidence and deal with every situation confidently and without embarrassment.Changing fashion, of course, does not apply just to dress. A barber today does not cut a boy’s hair in the same way as their fathers and grandfathers used to, and girls do not make up in the same way as their mothers and grandmothers did. The advertisers show us the latest fashionable styles and we are constantly under pressure to follow the fashion in case our friends think we are odd or dull. What causes fashions to change? Sometimes convenience or practical necessity or just the fancy of an influential person can establish a fashion. Take hats for example—In cold climates, early buildings were cold inside, so people wore hats indoors as well as outside. In recent times, the late President Kennedy caused a depression in the American hat industry by not wearing hats: more American men followed his example. There is also a cyclical pattern in fashion. In the 1920s in Europe and America, short skirts became fashionable. After World WarⅡ, they dropped to ankle length. Then they got shorter and shorter and the miniskirt was in fashion. After a few more years, skirts became longer again.Today, society is much freer and easier than it used to be. It is no longer necessary to dress like everyone else. Within reason, you can dress as you like or do your hair the way you like instead of the way you should because it is the fashion. The popularity of jeans and the“untidy”look seems to be a reaction against the increasingly expensive fashion of the top fashion houses.61. What do the fashion magazines or TV advertisements claim to bring us? (No more than 2 words)(2 marks)____________________________________________________________ _______62. Why does the writer take President Kennedy as an example? (No more than 14 words)(3 marks)____________________________________________________________ ________63. What does the writer try to explain by talking about short skirts? (No more than 8 words)(2 marks)____________________________________________________________ ________64. Why are jeans so popular according to the writer? 考点1主旨大意之精确归纳标题真题解密Harvard researchers have created a tough,low-cost,biodegradable(可生物降解的) material inspired by insects’ hard outer shells. The material’s inventors say it has a number of possible uses and someday could provide a more environmentally friendly alternative to plastic. The material, made from shrimp(虾) shells and proteins produced from silk,is called “shrilk”.It isthin, clear, flexible and strong.A major benefit of the material is its biodegradability.Plastic’s toughness and flexibility represented a revolution in materials science during the 1950s and ’60s.Decades later, however, plastic’s very durability(耐用性) is raising questions about how appropriate it is for one-time products such as plastic bags,or short-lived consumer goods, used in the home for a few years and then cast into a landfill where they will degrade for centuries. What is the point of making something that lasts 1,000 years?Shrilk not only will degrade in a landfill, but its basic components are used as fertilizer(肥料),and so will enrich the soil.Shrilk has great potential, the inventors said.Materials from which it is made are plentiful in nature, found in everything ranging from shrimp shells, insect bodies to living plants. That makes shrilk low cost, and its mass production possible should it be used for products demanding a lot of material.Work on shrilk is continuing in the lab.The inventors said the material becomes flexible when wet,so they’re exploring ways to use it in wet environments. They’re also developing simpler production processes, which could be used for non-medical products, like for computer cases and other products inside the home. They’re even exploring combining it with other materials, like carbon fibers,to give it new properties. She was one of the most beloved singers of the postwar era. Take her The Tennessee Waltz for example, it sold more than 10 million copies and was her biggest hit.Born in Claremore, Oklahoma, a small town near Tulsa, Page originally dreamed of a career in commercial art. Her first job in the art department at a local radio station soon led to performing on her own 15minute program. At age 20, Page was discovered by bigband leader Jack Rael, who quit his job to become her manager. In 1948, she signed her first recording contract with Mercury Records and two years later enjoyed her first hit record. She stayed with Mercury for the next 14 years and recorded hit after hit including With My Eyes Wide Open, I'm Dreaming and Old Cape Cod.Her last hit was Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte, recorded for the Bette Davis' movie of the same name. And then, there was Doggie in the Window. The creative tune was a huge hit, but with its repeated barking sounds and silly lyrics(歌词), the song has been used by many people as an example of all that was wrong with pop music in the early 1950s.Throughout the 1950s, Patti Page made regular appearances on television variety shows and in 1957 she was chosen to host the musical program The Big Record. The following year, Page appeared in her own CBS television series, The Patti Page Show. She continued to record and perform into the 21st century, most recently releasing an album of songs for children, a Christmas record, and a new “best” of collection.Besides music, Patti Page did a bit of acting.
