He started out collecting insects as a hobby, but eventually his longing for adventure led him to explore the world.Luckily for Wallace, Victorian Britain was discovering an interest in weird and wonderful insets, so the demand from museums and private collections for these bests was growing. Wallace was able to make a living doing what he loved: collecting beetles and other insects. But his first trip of exploring the world ended in disaster. Wallace proceeded to the Amazon in South America. Its giant forests promised a wealth of new species, sure to put him on the scientific map. The trip took 6 weeks and involved every mode of transport in existence at the time. After four years Wallace had to watch in despair as his samples went up in flames—including live animals he was bringing home that were trying to jump free of the flames. But he did not let it stop him.In 1854, Wallace set off on another adventure, this time to the Malay Archipelago. Wallace found himself humbled by the new and exciting things he saw. He later recalled: "As I lie listening to these interesting sounds, I think how many besides myself have longed to see with their own eyes the many wonderful and beautiful things which I am daily encountering."In 1858, Wallace wrote what became as the "Temate essay": a piece of writing that was to change our understanding of life forever. In his essay, Wallace argued that a species would only turn into another species if it was struggling for existence. Henry W. Bates was one of many scientists delighted by the idea of evolution by natural selection. Diagnosed in 2010 with pseudotumor cerebri, a rare health condition in which pressure increases around the brain and can result in the loss of vision, Wright learned how to use a screen reader to read the site through the touch of keyboard and sound of a robotic voice. Still, when a friend sends her in a photo, Wright often has no clue what the image shows. Now Facebook is trying to solve this problem by exploiting the power of artificial intelligence to create new tools that not only describe items in a photo but allows users to ask what's in an image."I can have a basic picture in my mind of what's going on in the picture and now I can comment on my own, " said Wright, who got to try out the new tools that are still being tested. "Of course, it's different, but it's something more than I had."An estimated 285 million people are visually disabled globally, according to the World Health Organization, and research conducted by Facebook showed that blind users have trouble figuring outwhat's in a photo because the description isn't clear or doesn't exist.Facebook has made it easier to skim through the content on its website with a screen reader by improving HTML headings, adding alternative text for images, launching keyboard shortcuts, and more. Using artificial intelligence to describe photos is only a part of these ongoing efforts. With 1.5 billion users, Facebook isn't the only social media company that wants to improve its website for the visually impaired. Along with Facebook and other major tech firms, Twitter and LinkedIn have their own accessibility teams and belong to an initiative called "Teaching Accessibility."Jeff Wieland, Facebook's head of accessibility engineering, said the group wants to educate more engineers, especially early on in college, about designing products that are compatible with the disabled and others. If you've ever been overheard criticizing yourself for a foolish mistake or practicing a tricky speech ahead of time. You'll have felt the social restriction against communicating with yourself in words. According to the well-known saying, talking to yourself is the first sign of madness.1Talking to ourselves, whether out loud or silently in our heads, is a valuable tool for thought. Far from being a sign of foolishness, self-talk allows us to plan what we are going to do, manage our activities, regulate our emotions and even create a narrative of our experience.Take a trip to any preschool and watch a small child playing with her toys. You are very likely to hear her talking to herself: offering herself directions and giving voice to herfrustrations.2We do a lot of it when we are young—perhaps one reason for our shyness about continuing with it as adults. As children, according to the Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky, we use private speech to regulate our actions in the same way that we use public speech to control the behavior ofother.3Psychological experiments have shown that the distancing effect of our words can give us a valuable perspective on our actions. One recent study suggested that self-talk is most effective when we address ourselves in the second person: "you" rather than "I".We internalize the private speech we use as children—but we never entirely put away the out-loud version.4You're sure to see an athlete or two getting themselves ready for a sharp phrase or scolding themselves after a bad shot. Both kinds of self-talk seem to bring a range of benefits to our thinking. Those words to the self, spoken silently or aloud, are so much more than lazy talk.A. But there's no need for embarrassment.B. If you want proof, turn on the sports channel.C. As we grow older, we don't abandon this system—we internalize it.D. This so-called inner speech can improve our performance on various tasks.E. Conducting a dialogue with ourselves might turn out to be one of the keys to human creativity.F. Psychologists refer to this as private speech—language that is spoken out loud but directed at the self. Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.Moustache(胡子)for Cash"Movember", as the annual event is known, sees men in countries including the UK, US and Australia grow out their facial hair while collecting sponsorship money from friends, family and colleagues, with the money going to cancer charities. The month of no shaving began unofficially in 2003, when a pair of men from Australia persuaded their family to join them in growing a moustache in order to encourage men to get themselves checked for cancer, which is seen as distasteful by some males. A year later, the group decided to set up the Movember Foundation, asking friends and colleagues to offer donations of money to support their efforts, and raised a massive A$54, 000 which was shared between a number of health projects. With thanks most likely a social media, Movember soon went global and the foundation now operates worldwide, having raised over£440 million since 2004. The effects of the fundraising are wide-reaching, which had made a significant discovery in the treatment of cancer. The issue of some men being too self-willed to visit their doctor for a checkup, or perhaps being raised in a culture of "touch it out",has led some males to neglect their health, which may mean it could be too late if something potentially deadly did develop. However, Movember is helping to break down the shame of male to appeal to men in a way that other campaigns just don't—with a sort of blokey jokiness. Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.(1)

The sun arrives early and I stare out my window, feeling shamefor invading ( 侵犯) the privacy of the homeless woman who has settled across the street. I am not sure when she first appeared, maybe a month ago. Each morning I watch as she gets out from the narrow space between the two large buildings across from mine. She wears the same dirty, badly torn dress every day. I can see she fights to pull herself up into a standing position. She fails in the first two or three tries, but determination always wins out. She remains leaning against the wall for several long minutes, appearing to gather the necessary strength needed to pick up her possession--all packed into five plastic bags. With tears in my eyes, I watch as she places her feet pointing outward to avoid falling. Her steps are measured and cautious as she slowly makes her way to the corner and disappears. When I first noticed this woman, I went across the street and offered her 20 dollars, but she turned her back to me and pretended not to see me. The expression on her face was one of shame, causing me to feel guilt for invading her privacy. The next night I bought a hotdog and a Coke, and left them in the spot when she was not there. Feeling like a spy, I watched as she ate the hotdog like a starving cat that had not eaten for days.I too often find myself complaining about life, but when I look out my window and see the old woman, I feel the need to apologize for my foolish pride in not realizing how fortunate I really am. There are many poor people in my town. I have become familiar with many of their faces, and then suddenly they disappear. All broken. It sounds like a pile of things that you’ s stuck in boxes and take to the dustbin. In fact, itof things mended in a single afternoon by British volunteers determined to get people to stopthrowing things away. This is the Reading Repair Cafe, part of an international network aimedat dealing with a world of rubbish. The helicopter belongs to William, who cheerfully describes himself as “ mechanically imcompetent” . He has owned it for 8 years, but 3 years ago it stopped working and it has beensitting unused in his cupboard ever since. He sits down at the table of Colin Haycock, an IT professional who volunteers at the repair cafe, which has been running for about four years and is a place where people can bring all manner ofhousehold items to be fixed for free. In less than five minutes, Haycock has fixed the helicopterand it works well.William looks ashamed;Haycock looks pleased. “ I wish they were all that simple,” he says. Today, the repairs will stop 24 kg of waste from going to landfill (垃圾填埋场)and save 284kgof CO2. Some items can’ t be fixed on the spot but very little needs to be thrown away.Gabrille Stanley, who used to run a clothing business, says she was drawn to volunteering at therepair cafe to fight the“ throwaway culture” she sees. Some people felt fine in the morning and then were dead by night. Patients coughed up blood. Their faces turned blue. That was what happened in 1918. A deadly flu killed ten of millions of people around the world. It is 100 years later. Scientists are thinking about how to keep us safe from another super -flu.Dr. Anthony Fauci says we need one vaccine(疫苗)that can protect against most or all types of the flu. Scientists want a shot that people could get every 5 or 10 years to get rid of normal flu shots. Maybe someday we will need just one shot. It could last our whole lives. It will not be easy. Scientists have been learning about flu for 100 years. Still, the flu often beats our best plans tostop it. That is because it is always changing. The immune system ( 免疫系统) protects the body. It keeps us healthy by fighting things that might harm the body. To get around our immune system, the flu changes itself every year. Scientists have a new plan, though. They are learning how the flu tricks the immune system. Theyare finding which part of the flu stays the same each year. The 1918 flu outbreak shows why this isso important. Back then, there was no flu vaccine. There was no way to stop it. By winter 1919.the flu had infected one -third of the world’ s population, killing more than 50 million people in ashort time.In 2009, scientists made a great discovery. They learned something new. Sometimes, peopleimmune system make a small number of special antibodies. Antibodies are proteins (蛋白质) inthe blood. These proteins stop us from getting sick. These special antibodies can stop the flu.Scientists are trying different tricks to get people’ s bodies to make more of those antibodies. They still need to learn more, though. In the meantime, Fauci says it is silly to think about what the nextflu might bring.“ We just need to be prepared,” he said.28.

Do you know what's interesting about that list?Of the 75 names,an astonishing 14are Americans born within nine years of each other in the mid 19th century.Think about that for a moment.Historians start with Cleopatra and the Pharaohs and comb through every year in human history ever since, looking in every corner of the world for evidence of extraordinary wealth, and almost 20percent of the names they end up with come from a single generation in a single country. Here's the list:What's going on here? The answer is obvious,if you think about it.In the 1860's and 1870's,the American economy went through perhaps the greatest transformation in its history. This was when the railways were built, and when Wall Street emerged. It was when industrial manufacturing started properly. It was when all the rules by which the traditional economy functioned were broken and remade. What that list says is that it really matters how old you were when that transformation happened. If you were born in the late 1840's,you missed it.You were too young to take advantage of that moment. If you were born in the 1820's,you were too old:your mindset was shaped by the pre﹣Civil War pattern. But there is a particular, narrow nine﹣year window that was just perfect for seeing the potential that the future held. All of the 14 men and women on that list had vision and talent. But they also were given an extraordinary opportunity.28.What does the author think of the fact that 14 of the 75 richest people were born in USA?A.Surprising.B.Exciting.C.Unfair.D.Proud.29.What does the author think leads to the great wealth of the richest people in the USA?A.Their strong hardwork.B.Their talented mindset.C.The industrial tradition.D.The economic transformation.30.What does the author think is the most important to the 14 richest Americans in the last paragraph?A.Talent.B.Vision.C.Opportunity.D.Potential.31.What is right about the 14 American﹣born richest people on the list?A.They were chosen throughout USA.B.They were born from 1831 to 1840.C.They were shaped by the Civil war.D.They were interesting and wealthy.32.About 100 years ago the horse﹣manure(马粪) crisis drove most observers to despair.19th﹣century cities depended on horses for daily functioning. In New York in 1900,100,000 horses were used in all transport, and in delivering the goods needed by the growing population. The problem was that all these horses produced huge amounts of manure.A horse on average produces 15﹣35 pounds of manure per day.Consequently, the streets of 19th﹣century cities were covered by horse manure. This,in turn, attracted huge numbers of flies, and the dried manure was blown everywhere.Every day 2.5 million pounds of horse manure were produced and had to be swept up and disposed of.In 1898 the first international urban﹣planning conference was held in New York.It was abandoned after three days, instead of the scheduled ten, because nobody could see any solution to the growing crisis by urban horses and their output. The problem did seem tough. The larger and richer that cities became, the more horses they needed. The more horses, the more manure. In 1894,a writer estimated that in 50 years every street in London would be buried under nine feet of manure. Moreover, all these horses had to be stabled, which used up ever﹣larger areas of increasingly valuable land. And as the number of horses grew, ever﹣more land had to be devoted to producing hay to feed them (rather than producing food for people),and this had to be brought into cities and distributed﹣by horse﹣drawn vehicles. It seemed that urban civilization was doomed.Of course, urban civilization was not buried in manure.Because millions of horses were replaced by motor vehicles! This was possible because of cleverness of inventors and entrepreneurs such as Gottlieb Daimler and Henry Ford, and a system that gave them the freedom to put their ideas into practice.Even more important, however, was the existence of the price mechanism. When the price of horse﹣drawn transport rose steadily with the increasing cost of feeding and housing horses, strong incentives(动机) were created for people to find alternatives.32.How would you feel if you were walking on the New York street of 1900?A.Sick.B.Light﹣hearted.C.Excited.D.Satisfied.33.What was the problem that New York faced one hundred years ago?A.Heavy traffic.B.Narrow streets.C.Little valuable land.D.Horse manure.34.What was the probable target of the first international urban﹣planning conference in 1898?A.To feed more horses.B.To find a solution to horse manure.C.To reduce public buses.D.To produce motor vehicles.35.What was the most important factor in solving the urban civilization problem of New York?A.Entrepreneurs'freedom.B.People's incentives.C.Price mechanism.D.Government's appeal. Snowblind﹣﹣it's a frightening word.Thankfully,it's a condition that is totally preventable.Snow blindness is a painful, temporary loss of vision due to overexposure to the sun's UV rays.Essentially, snow blindness is caused by a sunburned eye.(36)Though it is commonly called snow blindness, the condition can (and often does) occur in the absence of snow. The terms"snowblind"and"snow blindness"have become popular because snow is highly reflective of ultraviolet radiation.(37) Also, skiing, mountain climbing and snowboarding usually take place at relatively high altitudes, where the sun's UV rays are stronger.Combined, these factors can double your risk of gettingsunburned eyes, compared with being outdoors at lower altitudes in the summertime.(38)Television journalist Anderson Cooper experienced snow﹣free snow blindness first﹣hand a few years ago when he spent a couple hours on a boat in Portugal without sunglasses and ended up"blind for 36hours,"according to his report of the incident. Not only can you become snowblind without snow﹣﹣it can happen without sunlight,too!(39)For example, sun lamps can cause temporary"snow"blindness if proper eye protection is not used.(40)To relieve pain or discomfort from snow blindness, stay indoors and wear sunglasses.Keep your eyes well﹣moistened with artificial tears. For additional relief, use over﹣the﹣counter pain relievers.Be sure to use only pain relievers you know you can take without worry of an allergic reaction. You also may find that placing a cool, dampened washcloth over your closed eyelids is comforting.A.You don't need snow to become snowblind.B.It will likely affect those traveling in snowy conditions.C.To prevent snow blindness on the slopes, wear sunglasses.D.Sometimes it occurs from man﹣made sources of ultraviolet radiationE..In fact, snow can reflect over 80percent of the UV rays that fall upon it.F.Snow blindness is scary, but usually it's temporary, and there are ways to relieve the discomfort.G.But water and white sand also are highly reflective of the sun's UV rays, thus increasing the risk. There was a businessman who was deep in debt and could see no way out.He sat on the park bench, head in hands,(41) if anything could save his company from But psychologists say this addictive form of vitriolic(刻薄)back and forth should be avoided-or simply checked by online media outlets-because it actually damages society and mental health.A perfect storm of factors come together to cause the rudeness and aggression seen in the comments' sections of Web pages, said Markman, a professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. First, commenters are often nearly nameless, and thus, unaccountable for their rudeness. Second, they are at a distance from the target of their anger-be it the article they're commenting on or another comment on that article-and people tend to go against distant abstractions more easily than living, breathing talkers. Third, it's easier to be nasty in writing than in speech, hence the now somewhat out-of-date practice of leaving angry notes(back when people used paper), Markman said. And finally, Edward Wasserman, Knight Professor in Journalism Ethics at Washington and Lee University, noted another cause of the vitriol: bad examples set by the media. "Unfortunately, mainstream media have made a fortune teaching people the wrong ways to talk to each other. People understandably conclude anger is the political vernacular(行话), that this is how public ideas are talked about," Wasserman wrote in an article on his university's website. "It isn't. "In Markman's opinion, media outlets should cut down on the anger and hatred that have become the model in reader exchanges. "It's valuable to allow all sides of an argument to be heard. To a greater degree, someone who is making a reasonable point but with an angry tone is hurting the nature of the argument, because they are promoting people to respond in a similar way," he said. For their part, people should seek out actual human beings to communicate with, Markman said-and we should make a point of including a few people in our social circles who think differently from us. "You'll develop a healthy respect for people whose opinions differ from your own; the back-and-forth negotiation that goes on in having a conversation with someone you don't agree with is a skill and it's not easy to master it, " Markman said.(1) Why do psychologists encourage people to stop attacking each other online?A. The social problems are too complex to figure out.B. The online media outlets will review the comments.C. The action does harm to society and individuals.D. The Internet users are easily attached to hot topics.(2) What can we learn from the analysis by Markman?A. People are cautious to make vitriolic remarks online.B. However, making changes to these genes in order to improve or change traits such as strength, intelligence or beauty should remain off-limits, the report authors concluded.Changing the so-called germline(种系)is illegal in the United States. It has largely been considered ethically off-limits here as well, at least while bioethicists and scientists considered the unforeseen effects and unexamined moral dilemmas of using new gene-editing technologies. However, scientists have moved forward aggressively to explore the possibility of changing disease genes in other adult human cells with a revolutionary technique known as CRISPR-Cas 9. It is widely believed that gene editing of this sort could treat patients with metabolic (新陈代谢的) disorders, certain cancers, and a range of other diseases that arise from genetic mutations(突变)-without changing the germline.Last year, Chinese scientists launched a trial that uses CRISPR-Cas9 in a treatment for lung cancer. While the trial's outcome is awaited with high anticipation, scientists outside China have expressed concern that ethical reservations in the United States and Europe will put them at a disadvantage.CRISPR-Cas9 makes gene editing more straightforward, more precise and far more widespread. As such, the National Academies' report acknowledges that changing heritable DNA in eggs, sperm and early embryos is fast becoming "a realistic possibility that deserves serious consideration. "The 22-member panel of scientists and bioethicists who produced the report completed a comprehensive review of the issues raised by that prospect.Clinical trials involving germline editing should only be pursued to treat diseases that cannot be improved with "reasonable alternatives, " the 22-member panel of scientists and bioethicists said. In addition, they added, scientists should convincingly demonstrate they are targeting a gene that either causes or strongly makes a carrier likely to suffer from a serious disease or condition, and that they have weighed the likely risks and benefits of changing that gene. Finally, scientists should conduct long﹣term follow-up studies to know how gene editing affects the next generations. Public debate and discussion about the technology should continue, the panel added.(1) In what circumstances can scientists change a person's DNAA. Making a person look much younger.B. Protecting future generations from some heritable diseases.C. Using the most advanced gene-editing technologies.D. Changing the germline for a better function.(2) What is the advantage of CRISPR-Cas9?A. It can treat diseases more precisely without changing the germline.B. It can successfully cure people of most deadly diseases.C. It can change genes in adult human cells.D. It can stop genetic mutations.(3) What possible conclusion can be drawn according to the passage?A. Future generations will live longer and become more intelligent.B. Chinese scientists created CRISPR-Cas9 and put it into use.C. The gene editing is strictly forbidden for moral dilemmas.D. The gene editing research is still at the primary stage.(4) What does this report mainly talk about?A. A new gene﹣editing technology and concerns about it.B. He never understood what they meant. He didn't feel difficult at all. He didn't throw milk bottles at the garden wall, or tip tomato ketchup over his head and pretend it was blood, or slash at his granny's ankle with his sword, though he occasionally thought of these things. Apart from all vegetables except potatoes, and fish, eggs and cheese, there was nothing he would not eat. He wasn't noisier or dirtier or more stupid than anyone he knew. His name was easy to say and spell. His face, which was pale and freckled, was easy enough to remember. He went to school every day like all other children and never made that much fuss about it. He was only as offensive to his sister as she was to him. Policemen never came knocking at the front door wanting to arrest him. Doctors in white coats never offered to take him away to the madhouse. As far as Peter was concerned, he was really quite easy. What was difficult about him?It was not until he had been a grown-up himself for many years that Peter finally understood. They thought he was difficult because he was so silent. That seemed to bother people. The other problem was he liked being by himself. ① Not all the time, of course. Not even every day. But most days he liked to go off somewhere for an hour to his bedroom, or the park. He liked to be alone and think his thoughts. Now, grown-ups like to think they know what's going on inside a ten-year-old's head. And it's impossible to know what someone is thinking if they keep quiet about it. People would see Peter lying on his back on a summer's afternoon, chewing a piece of grass and staring at the sky. "Peter, Peter! What are you thinking about" they would call to him. And Peter would sit up with a start. "Oh, nothing. Nothing at all. " Grown-ups knew that something was going on inside that head, but they couldn't hear it or see it or feel it. They couldn't tell Peter to stop it, because they did not know what it was he was doing in there. ②He could have been setting his school on fire or feeding his sister to an alligator and escaping in a hot air balloon, but all they saw was a boy staring at the blue sky without blinking, a boy who did not hear you when you called his name.As for being on his own, grown-ups didn't much like that either. They don't even like other grown ﹣ups being on their own. When you join in, people can see what you're up to. You're up to what they're up to. ③ Peter had different ideas. In fact, he thought, if people spent less time joining in and making others join in, and spent a little time each day alone remembering who they were or who they might be, then the world would be a happier place and wars might never happen…The trouble with being a daydreamer who doesn't say much is that the teachers at school, especially the ones who don't know you very well, are likely to think you are rather stupid. ④ Or, if not stupid, then dull. No one can see the amazing things that are going on in your head. A teacher who saw Peter staring out the window or at a blank sheet of paper on his desk might think that he was bored, or stuck for an answer. But the truth was quite different.(1) It can be learned from the first paragraph that.A. Peter liked playing practical jokesB. Peter wasn't particular about food at allC. boys generally did some crazy thingsD. Peter knew why he was called "difficult"(2) Which of the following would Peter be most likely to do?A. To walk around a lake for quite a while.B. To break the neighbor's fence for fun.C. To tie a dirty dustbin to a dog's tail.D. To sleep in the tent with his friends.(3) Where can the sentence "You have to join in, or you'll spoil it for everyone else. " most probably be put?A. ①B. ②C. ③D. ④(4) What is the main reason that Peter was considered "difficult" by grown-ups?A. He was far from communicative.B. He turned a deaf ear to others.C. He did not do well in his studies.D. He preferred to live on his own.(5) What might the author continue to write about in the following part?A. Effective measures to help Peter out.B. How the unique ideas Peter had amazed others.C. Difficulties keeping Peter from learning well.D. Further prejudice against Peter among grown-ups.(6) What can serve as the best title of this passage?A. The DaydreamerB. The TroublemakerC. The Hard NutD. They followed dozens of bus drivers for two weeks, looking to see when they flashed fake versus sincere smiles at their passengers. The results showed that on days when the drivers tried to put on an act and pretend to be in a good mood, their actual moods got worse. This was especially true for women. And another research suggests that people who really want to be happy actually obtain less happiness from positive experiences, apparently because their expectations are too high. Again and again, trying to gain happiness despite no preference seems to have the opposite result. The results of the bus-driver study can be explained by researchers Oliver John and James Gross, who found that negative feelings like sadness or anger only intensify when we try to suppress (压制)them. That's because we feel bad about ourselves when our outward appearance contradicts how we truly feel inside. What's more, when we suppress emotions like sadness, we deny them the important function they serve. If we don't recognize sadness we might not take the necessary steps to improve the situation. Expressing our sadness can also get comfort and compassion from those who care about us, strengthening our bonds.Recently, scientists have also been paying special attention to the benefits of mindfulness. When you respond mindfully to an emotional trigger(诱因), you pause rather than reacting, and then you can escape getting troubled by thoughtfulness. Rather than scold yourself, you simply notice what you're feeling without judging that response as right or wrong. Studies suggest that a mindful response to a negative event reduces the amount of sadness we experience, is associated with less depression and anxiety, and may even carry physiological benefits, such as lowering our heart rates.Unavoidably, the holidays will bring a mix of highs and lows. Perhaps the most important lesson to keep in mind is that this variety of emotions might be the best thing possible for your overall well-being.That was the key insight from a study published in 2014 by a team of researchers from Yale University. Their survey of more than 37,000 people found that, after experiencing a greater variety and abundance of emotions consistently linked to lower depression, people took less medication, visited doctors less frequently, spent fewer days in hospitals, practiced better dietary and exercise habits, and smoked less.In other words, sadness, anger, and other difficult emotions are like so many other parts of the holidays, they're nothing to fear. Just make sure you're balancing them with lighter experiences.

看出,主要是学生没有联系上下文来解题以及对个别词掌握的不够;
