AI’m a speed reader. Have been since I was a teen. Mother worked for the continuing education department of a university, and they were offering a class on speed reading and needed one more person to fill out the class. I became that one person. The class met for only an hour or two for a few weeks, but when the goal of a class is speed, you don’t need to meet for long. The instructor said to make our eyes go across the lines of words as fast as they could and not to be concerned about what the words meant. I read Animal Farm in 10 ten minutes. Cover to cover. The instructor asked what the book was about. I said I didn’t know, but if I had to guess I’d say it was about animals on a farm. He looked displeased.I’ve been speed reading ever since. I can’t stop and I can’t slow down. Today, for example, I plan on reading Churchill’s History of the English Speaking Peoples over lunch. I hope it’s more memorable than Animal Farm.As a result of all this speed-reading, I often experience a delay between what I think I read and what something actually says. The other day I passed by a mall with a large sign that said “Auto Theft Sale”. I thought how efficient it was for auto thieves to simply sell all the stole cars in a big tent at the mall. A half-mile later it dawned on me that the sign had said “Auto Tent Sale”.Every time I drive through a construction zone, I gasp (屏气). The sign says: “Hit a Worker$10, 000 (about 62,000 yuan).” It reads like they’re offering a reward. Of course, it’s not an offer. It’s just that my eyes rarely take in the last line that says, “Fine.” It’s a $10, 000 fine if you hit a worker. Someone really needs to rephrase that one.Speed reading has bitten me on the backside more than once. Especially as a writer. Just ask any of my editors.21. Why was the author able to attend classes on speed reading?A. Her mother found her gifted in speed reading.B. She was the only teenager applicant for the class.C. She’d a lready practiced speed reading before.D. She took a chance and filled one vacancy (空缺).22. What left the instructor unsatisfied in the class?A. It took the author ten minutes to complete Animal Farm.B. The author read fast but didn’t get the main idea of the book.C. The class was only an hour or two for a few weeks.D. All the class actually failed to follow his advice.23. The author tends to prove that there is always a delay in her understanding after speed readingby ________.A. making comparisonsB. analyzing cause and effectC. giving examplesD. drawing a conclusion24. Which of the following best describes the author?A. Talented and productive.B. Proud and hot-headed.C. Careless and quick-tempered.D. Truthful and humorous.BA trip across the Pacific will guarantee you a different experience with a tipping culture you’ve never come across in China. In the US, giving a little extra money to service workers on top of your bill is a common practice.Though US national law requires that businesses pay workers at least $ (45 yuan) per hour, employees receiving tips—often waiters and waitresses—are the exceptions. They usually only receive at least $ an hour, and tips make up the difference. As the Wall Street Journal put it, “The American system of tipping holds the promise of great rewards for waiting staff.”So how should you tip if you are in the US?Normally you pay tips as a percentage of the bill. Offering an extra 15 percent of the bill to the waiter or waitress in a restaurant and to the delivery man or woman is customary and expected. You can offer more for great service and less for poor service.Yet there is an exception. For take-out food, you don’t have to provide tips, though some people say that filling an order still requires work and time that deserve a little extra—but maybe a little less.Tips are not expected at fast food restaurants, cafés or ice cream shops either, though a tip jar might be right by the cash register (收银机). Don’t feel obligated to throw some money in, but also remember that it doesn’t hurt. Those workers do not rely on tips.Other service workers also receive tips. For taxi drivers, 15 percent is the norm (标准), more if they help with your bags. Hairdressers often receive about 15 percent of the bill. The same goes for spa therapists and tour guides.Today, you can even pay tips on a credit card. When receiving a copy of the bill to sign, you are free to fill in how much you’d like to tip.Though thinking about when to tip and how much you should tip causes a big headache for many Chinese people, it’s important to bear in mind that as long as you show respect and use your reasoning, things will be just fine.25. According to the Wall Street Journal, the American system of tipping ________.A. helps restaurants profit moreB. encourages better serviceC. supports satisfactory pay for waiting staffD. encourages more respect to the waiting staff26. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A. We don’t necessarily have to pay tips at McDonalds’.B. We should always tip in a restaurant.C. Consumers can choose tip by credit card.D. Consumers usually pay 15% of the bill as tips.27. Which of the following best describes the author’s attitude towards tipping?A. Giving tips is a big headache for Chinese.B. There are too many rules to follow when tipping.C. Tipping system should not apply to foreigners.D. We need to take it easy and do as the Romans do.CWho knows why kids do anything? When it comes to cyberbullying (网络欺凌), they are often motivated by anger or frustration (挫败感). Sometimes they do it for entertainment or because they are bored and have too much time on their hands and too many tech toys available to them. Many do it for laughs or to get a reaction. Some do it by accident, without thinking before they do something. The power-hungry do it to make others suffer. And some think they arerighting wrong and standing up for others. Because their motives differ, the solutions and responses to each type of cyberbullying incident has to differ, too. There is no “one size fits all” when cyberbullying is concerned. However, education can help considerably in preventing and dealing with the consequences of cyberbullying. If we can help kids understand how much bullying hurts, and how in many cases words can hurt, fewer may cooperate with the cyberbullies. They will think twice before forwarding a hurtful e-mail, or visiting a cyberbullying “vote for the fat girl” site, or allowing others to take videos or cell phone pictures of personal moments. And, in addition to not lending their efforts to continue the cyberbullying, we also need to teach our children not to stand silently by while others are being hurt. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said that in the end we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends. Kids will feel more comfortable to break the silence if given an anonymous (匿名的) method of reporting cyberbullying web-sites. School administration, community groups and even school policing staff can receive these anonymous tips and take action quickly. If our children do not allow the cyberbullies to use them to embarrass or hurt others and realize that silence, when others are being hurt, is not acceptable, cyberbullying will quickly stop. It’s a tall task, but a noble goal. And in the end, our children will be safer on line and offline. We will have helped create a generation of good cybercitizens, controlling the technology instead of being controlled by it.28. Which of the following is NOT an action of cyber-bullying?A. Standing up for others.B. Forwarding a hurtful e-mail.C. V oting for the fat girl on a website.D. Saying cruel words to upset others.29. What does the underlined sentence mean?A. We will forget our enemies, but remember our friends.B. friends will give us silent support when we are in trouble.C. our friends will stick with us without saying anything.D. it hurt more if our friends stand by when we are suffering.30. The writer organizes the passage following the pattern of ________.A. effect—causeB. problem—solutionC. topic—supporting detailsD. conclusion—evidence31. What does the writer mainly tell us?A. How much kids suffer from cyberbullying.B. How to deal with different kinds of cyberbullies.C. How to teach kids to take a stand against cyberbullying.D. How to create a generation of good cybercitizens.DDear Parent/Guardian,There has been a case of Pertussis (百日咳) reported at Hilltop High. Families and friends gather to eat and give thanks for their blessing.Thanksgiving Day is really a harvest festival. This is why it is celebrated in late fall, after the crops are in. But one of the first thanksgivings in America had nothing to do with a good harvest. On December 4, 1619, the Pilgrims from England landed near what is now Charles City, Virginia. They knelt down and thanked God for their safe journey across the Atlantic. The first New England Thanksgiving did celebrate a rich harvest. The Pilgrims landed at what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1620. They had a difficult time and the first winter was cruel. Many of the Pilgrims died. But the next year, they had a good harvest. So Governor Bradford declared a three-day feast(盛宴). The Pilgrims invited Indian friends to join them for their special feast. Everyone brought food.In time, other colonies(殖民地)began to celebrate a day of thanksgiving. But it took years before there was a national Thanksgiving Day. During the Civil War, Sarah Josepha Hale persuaded Abraham Lincoln to do something about it. He proclaimed(宣布)the last Thursday of November 1863 as a day of thanksgiving. society as the major contributing influence.Theories ( 51 ) on the individual suggest that children ( 52 ) criminal behavior before they were not sufficiently ( 53 ) for previous misbehaviors or that they have learned criminal behavior through interaction with others.Theories focusing on the role of society suggest that children commit crimes in ( 54 ) to their failure to rise above their socioeconomic status or as a rejection of middle-class values. Most theories of juvenile delinquency have focused on children from ( 55 ) families,( 56 ) the fact that children from wealthy homes also commit crimes. The latter may commit crimes for lack of adequate control from parents. All ( 57 ) ,however, are uncertain or unimproved and are of course challenged with criticism.Changes in the social structure may indirectly ( 58 ) juvenile crime rates. For example, changes in the economy that ( 59 ) to fewer job opportunities for youth and rising unemployment ( 60 ) make gainful employment increasingly difficult to obtain. This results in ( 61 ) among youths and may in ( 62 ) lead more youths into criminal behavior.Families have also experienced ( 63 ) these years.More families consist of one parent households or two working parents;( 64 ) children are likely to have less supervision at home than was common in the traditional family ( 65 ) .This lack of parental supervision isthought to be an influence on juvenile crime rates.Other noticeable ( 66 ) of offensive acts include ( 67 ) experience or failure in school, the ( 68 ) availability of drugs and alcohol, and the growing phenomenon of child abuse and child neglect. All these conditions tend to increase the ( 69 ) of a child committing a criminal act,( 70 ) a direct cause and effect relationship has not yet been established.51.A.centering B.depending C.figuring D.concerning52.A.refer to B.know about C.engage in D.learn of53.A.punished B.forgiven C.forgotten D.excused54.A.return B.contact C.reference enjoyable-arenot always the same.Women often are told"You can't have it all."Sometimes what the speaker really is saying is:"You choose a career,so you can't expect to have closer relationships or a happy family life."or"You have a wonderful husband and children-what's all this about wanting a career?"But women need to understand and develop both aspects of well-being,if they are to feel good about themselves. Our study shows that, for women,well-being has two aspects. One is mastery, which includes self-respect,a sense of control over your life, and low levels of anxiety and depression.Mastery is closely related to the"doing"side of life,to work and activity.Pleasure is the other aspect, and it is made up of happiness, satisfaction and optimism. It is tied more closely to the"feeling"side of life. The two are independent of each other.A woman could be high in mastery and low in pleasure, and vice versa(反之亦然).For example,a woman who has a good job,but whose mother has just died, might be feeling very good about herself and in control of her work life, but the pleasure side could be damaged for a time. The concepts of mastery and pleasure can help us identify the sources of well-being for women, and correct past mistakes. In the past, women were encouraged to look only at the feeling side of life as the source of all well-being.But we know that both mastery and pleasure are important. And mastery seems to be achieved largely through work.In our study, all the groups of employed women were valued significantly higher in mastery than women who were not employed.A woman's well-being is developed when she takes on multiple roles. At least by middleadulthood, the women who were involved in a combination of roles-marriages,motherhood,and employment-were the highest in well-being,in spite of warnings about stress and strain.131.It can be inferred from the first paragraph that ______ .A.for women,a sense of"mastery"is more important than a sense of"pleasure"B.for women,a sense of"pleasure"is more important than a sense of"mastery"C.women can't have a sense of"mastery"and a sense of"pleasure"at the same timeD.a sense of"mastery"and a sense of"pleasure"are both necessary to women132.The author's attitude towards women having a career is ______ .A.negativeB.positiveC.indifferentD.realistic133.One can conclude from the passage that if a woman takes on several social roles,______ .A.it will be easier for her to overcome stress and strainB.she will be more successful in her careerC.her chances of getting promoted will be greaterD.her life will be richer and more meaningful134.Which of the following can be considered as a source of"pleasure"for women?______ A.Family life B.Multiple roles in societyC.Regular employmentD.Freedom from anxiety.BParties and social gathering no longer excite us the same way they once did. This is not because of a lack of desire to socialize, but the mobile-phone.At parties, more people are on their phones than on their drinks.According to a recent International Data Corporation Study, over half of all Americans have a smartphone and reach for it as soon as they wake up,keeping it in hand all day.In addition, too many people in society are using smartphones while driving and as a result, they get into carcrashes.34percent of teenagers admit sending messages while driving, and they agree that sending messages is their number one driving interruption.People's addiction(沉溺)to their smartphones is unbelievably becoming more important than the lives of themselves and others.Just as drivers ignore the importance of focusing while on the road, many people also fail to recognize the importance of human communication. When with their friends, some people aimlessly check or send messages in front of a friend, which sends a message to that friend:the person I am texting is more important than you.In addition, relying on our smartphones to make friends does not give us the same advantage as being able to make new friendships in the real world.Face-to-face conversations will give us much stronger communication skills in the long run.As many people risk their lives and the lives of people around them just to send a message or mindlessly check their messages, smartphones are in many ways more dangerous to people. The quality of this technology is preventing societal achievements and weakening the value of communication. Not only is the smartphone affecting our desire to communicate face to face, but it is also lowering society's ability to communicate.135.The purpose of the passage is to ______A.call for an end to use the smartphone while drivingB.tell us to pay attention to communication skillsC.express a concern about the overuse of the smartphoneD.advise us to be careful about the addiction to face-to-face communication.136.The second paragraph is developed by ______ .A.giving examplesB.time order.paring factsD.analyzing the effects137.The author advises us to make new friends ______ .A.by using smartphonesB.in a face-to-face wayC.in different waysD.by writing letters.138.Over-dependence on the smartphone leads to the fact that ______ .A.parties and gathering limit their social circle.B.people are more and more easy-going.C.people's communication skills are weakened.D.face-to-face communication becomes more and more dangerous.IV、信息匹配(本大题共5小题,共15.0分)139.So many section probably one of the most important decisions we have to make in life, and it is frequently one of the hardest decisions we have to make. One important question that you might ask yourself is:"How do I so shocked him as the truth about water shortage on the planet,"A UN report says by 2025more than 40countries are expected to ______ .That shortage of water will be the end of civilized life,"he said with great worry.[2]One day back in 2007,he was sitting in a friend's house and noticed a leaky tap.It bothered him.A few days later,he came across a statistic in the newspaper:a tap that drips (滴落)once every second wastes a thousand litres of water in a month.T hat triggered an idea.He would take a plumber(水管工)from door to door and fix taps for free every weekend.[3]He named his Non-governmental Organization‘D rop Dead'and created a slogan:save every drop…or drop dead.[4]By the end of the first year,he had visited l,533homes and fixed around 400taps.Slowly,the news began to spread.Local newspapers began to write about Drop Dead, which caused a further flood of grateful emails and messages.Conservatively,it could be estimated that he has saved at least 5.5m litres of water till date.[5]In the summer of 2014,the state where Aabid lives is expecting its worst drought in40years.Months in advance, the govemment has prepareddrought-relief packages worth millions of dollars, but Aabid sees his own approach as simple and inexpensive."Anyone can launch a water conservation project in his or her area.It doesn't require much funding. And most importantly,it puts the power back in our own hands,"he says.156.Fill in the blank in Paragraph l with proper words.(no more than 5words).______157.Why did Aabid take a plumber from door to door and fix taps?(no more than not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away.He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son.A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins"Twinkle, twinkle, little star"or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.[2]One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows:Once we have learned something, additional learning trials increase the length of time we will remember it.[3]In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them.We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such We all know the saying, “One’s enemy is one’s own anger and one’s calmness is the friend of oneself.” Anger is the root cause of many bad outcomes. We all know of damage that anger has caused us. There are many old stories that tell us the bad effects of anger. But the question is whether we should never experience anger and lead lives like sages (圣人)?I do not think the answer is a firm yes. Everyone should have this emotion and be able to use it ina wise way. In other words, it is also known as controlled aggression. We see a lot of this kind of controlled emotion when we watch athletes in action. If an athlete has the right amount of aggression, the game or the battle is half won. The other half can be won by his skills.Controlled aggression or anger also plays an important role in a person’s career and life.During the cours es of a person’s career, people who hold high positions need to exercise this e motion called anger in a professional and right manner. For getting the work done well, it is important for you to make use of positive aggression or controlled anger. We can extend this to our daily lives as well. If the parent is not strict at times, children will behave in a wrong way and do not develop as they are expected. Teachers have to exercise this emotion in a wise way to make the students gain knowledge in an effective manner. All in all, if one is able to use the emotion called anger in a controlled manner, it will lead to the smooth development in his life and career.1. You can slowly increase the time and intensity (强度) of your activities as you become more fit. 5●Keep a record of your activities. Reward yourself at times. Nothing will inspire you more than success!A.Try to make it a habit, but be flexible.B.They all cause you to feel warm and breathe heavily without being out of breath.C.Be an active role model for your children.D.That way, exercise will never seem boring.E. If you are overweight or have a high risk of heart disease, see your doctor for medicaladvice before exercising.F. Surround yourself with supportive people.G. Argument about individual accounts and their reliabilityD. Be your own investigative journalistE. Don’t believe everything you read in the newspapers.F. Information is presented in an entertaining way.1______With the arrival of the age of “information economy”, intellectual work is becoming a more important source of wealth than manufacturing. Organizations in all walks of life are doing more to spread their inf ormation. So people of the Public Relations are hired to speak for them. A lot of our news is actually collected from press releases and reports of events intentionally staged for journalists. In the information age, journalists spend their time, not investigating, but passing on the words of a spokesperson.2______There is a joke in the novel Scoop about the newspaper’s owner, Lord Copper. The editors can never disagree with him. When he’s right about something they answer “definitely”, and when he’s wrong they say “to some extent, Lord Copper.” It seems reasonable to suppose tha t, in the real world, the opinions of such powerful people still influence the journalists and editors who work for them.3______In countries where the news is not officially controlled, it may be provided by commercial organizations who depend on advertising. The news has to attract viewers and maintain its audience ratings. I suspect that some stories get air-time just because there happen to be exciting pictures to show. In Britain, we have the tabloid newspapers which millions of people read simply for entertainment. There is progressively less room for historical background, or statistics, which are harder to present as a sensational story.4______There is an argument that with spreading access to the internet and cheap technology for recording sound and images we will all be able to find exactly the information we want. People around the world will be able to publish their own eye-witness accounts and compete with the widely-accepted news-gatherers on equal terms. But what it will mean also is that we’ll be subjected to a still greater amount of nonsense and lies. Any web log may contain the latest information of the year, or equally, a made-up story that you will never be able to check. 5______Maybe the time has come to do something about it, and I d on’t just mean changing your choice of TV channel or newspaper. In a world where everyone wants you to listen to their version, you only have two choices: switch off altogether or start looking for sources you can trust. The investigative journalist of the future is everyone who wants to know the truth.第II卷(非选择题)请修改第II卷的文字说明二、单词拼写3. ________(不像) the girl of her age, she dreamed of becoming a physicist.4. At the age of ten he went to work. His employer had a large private library so Owen was able to educate himself. He read a lot in his spare time and at nineteen he was given the job of superintendent(监工) at a Manchester cotton mill. He was so successful there that he persuaded his employer to buy the New Lanark mill in Scotland. When he arrived at New Lanark it was a dirty little town with a population of 2,000 people. Nobody paid any attention to the workers' houses or their children's education. The conditions in the factories were very bad. In 1816 he opened the first free primary school in Britain.People came from all over the country to visit Owen's factory. For many people, it would be a wonderful dream to swim with these lovely animals! However, this may not be good for dolphins. They may get hurt because of human interaction (互动).Dolphins are active and usually look for food at night. In the day, they like to rest in shallow bays(浅湾). Many people think the dolphins are awake during the day as they swim. But when they sleep they rest half of their brain and keep the other half awake to breathe, so they may be sleepi ng even when they’re swimming in the water. From 2010 to 2013, spinner dolphins (飞旋海豚) of Hawaii’s Big Island were exposed to human activities more than 82 percent of the time, according to Julian Tyne, a researcher at Australia’s Murdoch University. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says disturbing the animals in their near-shore habitat could force them to swim to less favorable places, putting them at risk of attack by sharks and other animals.Besides, when people are around, dolphins become more active. Thus, they can’t get enough sleep. “Disturbing their resting behaviors can actually affect their long term health and the health of the dolphin population,” Ann Garrett of NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service told the Assoc iated Press. As a result, the NOAA wants to make rules to help protect the dolphins. For example, the agency (机构) may ban swimming with the Hawaii spinner dolphins. Or they may stop people from swimming in shallow bays when the dolphins are resting. Tour operators must also be taught to watch for signs to know when the dolphins are in their resting state.【1】Which of the following about dolphins is NOT true?A.They spend most of their time sleeping at night.B.They like to stay in shallow bays during the day.C.They keep half of their brain awake while sleeping.D.They may be sleeping even when they’re swimming.【2】When dolphins are disturbed in their near-shore habitat, they _____.A.would swim to a crowded placeB.could move closer to sharksC.could become less activeD.could likely sleep longer【3】Which activity is against the rules?A.Swimming with the Hawaii spinner dolphins.B.Swimming in bays where the dolphins live.C.Making signs that show the dolphins’ resting state.D.Making signs that show where the dolphins are.【4】What does the article mainly talk about?A.What habits dolphins have.B.What spinner dolphins are.C.How the animals live in the sea.D.How to protect dolphins near the shore.二、完形填空There was a man who played the piano in a small bar.
