I went online to check if my pay was in my bank account. To my amazement,I discovered that not only had I been paid,a company I’d never worked for had also paid me! I knew I’d have been beside myself if my own salary was not in my account,so I tried to get the money back to the right person. It is easier said than done.

The bank couldn’t help as it wasn’t a bank problem. The human-resource department at the company that paid me was unable to help as I didn’t have enough details.I rang the bank again.Thankfully I had sympathetic call operator who gave me a name,so I again rang the company “Daniel” worked for.

I expected the bank would contact me to arrange to take the money from my account and repay Daniel.I heard nothing for a month and the money remained in my account

when Daniel called, explaining he’d tried to get back his money but had been unsuccessful as neither the bank nor his company felt it was their error. He had rung to ask if I could speak to the bank, but after chatting for a few minutes we realized we could probably fix this problem ourselves.

We decided I would take the money from my account and he would pick it up from me.Due to my busy job I was unable to meet Daniel personally but he left me a lovely bottle of wine in exchange for what was rightfully his.I never had any intention of keeping Daniel’s pay,but the red tape(繁琐手续) made it difficult to do the right thing. It all came down to two people being able to do what a huge bank and a large company couldn’t do—admit a mistake has occurred and fix it.

语篇解读本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了有人把钱误打进作者的账户而引起的故事。

6.What was the attitude of the author towards the extra money in his bank account? A.He didn’t know what to do with it.

B.He felt lucky to get it.

C.He thought of keeping it for himself.

D.He wanted to return it to the right place.

答案 D

解析细节理解题。根据第一段中的“...if my own salary was not in my account,so I tried to get the money back to the right person.”可知,作者打算把账户里多出来的钱还给它真正的主人,故选D。

7.The underlined phrase “beside myself” in Paragraph 1 probably means “”.A.very fortunate B.very angry

C.really thankful D.at ease

答案 B

解析词义猜测题。根据画线词后的“if my own salary was not in my account”可知,这里假设的是如果自己的工资不在账户里,作者不可能会感到幸运、感激或放心,排除A、C、D三项,beside oneself极度兴奋,感情失去控制,这里的意思是“生气”,故选B。8.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Daniel had been repaid when he called the author.

B.The author was to blame as he didn’t have enough details.

C.Neither the bank nor the company admitted their fault.

D.Daniel had the same name as the author’s.

答案 C

解析细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中的“...explaining he’d tr ied to get back his money but had been unsuccessful as neither the bank nor his company felt it was their error.”可知,银行和公司都不承认是他们的过错,故选C。

9.How was the problem solved in the end?

A.The author and Daniel solved the problem themselves.

B.It cost Daniel a lovely bottle of wine to get back his money.

C.The author gave the money back to the company.

D.The call operator offered to solve their problem.

答案 A

解析细节理解题。根据第三段最后“...but after chatting for a few minutes we realized we could probably fix this problem ourse lves.”和第四段可知,作者和Daniel两个人私下把事情解决了,故选A。

Amy Chua is the author of “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother”.In the book,Chua, also a professor at Yale Law School, states her child-bringing-up method l earned from her parents moving here from China years ago:no sleepovers,no television,no grades lower than an A.

“We guessed her book would cause much disagreement,” Wang Feifei, editor at CITIC Publishing House, told the reporter.“We don’t take it as a tradi tional parenting book, largely because it involves cross-cultural conflict.” The book has been available online since Mid-January and ranked No.80 in sales on https://www.doczj.com/doc/e6992323.html,,a Chinese version of Amazon. It is to receive wider distribution(发行) at bookstores after the Feb.3 Chinese New Year holiday.

The book has struck a nerve with Americans, especially American mothers. An article published earlier this month in the WallStreetJournal, called WhyChineseMothersareBetter, lit a strong reaction(The article now has close to 8,000 comments and most of them are critical, many of them completely unfriendly). And that’s just what she did on Tuesday night’s show “The Colbert Report”.The host Stephen Colbert put Chua on the spot.“People have accused you of saying that the Chinese way of raising a child is better to what Western mothers do.True or false?” he asked.“Uh...false,” Chua replied, her voice uncertain.Colbert seized the opportunity to point out Chua’s inconsistency(不一致).“So you raised your children in a worse way?” Chua made a set of defensive talking points, some of them more convincing than others. Her arguments in defense of strict parenting were “I think if you give a 5 or 8-year-old free choice,I think that’s going to be video games.” Chua thinks that anyone can be what she calls a “Chinese Mother”;all you have to do is to demand hard work, determination and discipline from your children.“I think they are fundamental American values.”

I stood at the edge of the cliff. The wind stung my eyes, cutting into my skin.Dark-feathered birds circled the air, swooping(俯冲) low over the ocean every now and then to catch their dinner.Hundreds of feet below, the deep ocean beat against the rough sandy shore.I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with excitement—and at the same time, fear.

Behind me,I heard the rest of the crew start to mutter.I was here for the shooting of a movie as I was one of the lead actors in the film DangerousThings, and this scene was right in the middle of the climax(高潮).It was vital that this went right.

The director had talked to me about getting a stunt double(替身演员),but I’d

persuaded him that I could handle the dive.I’d taken a diving course a few years ago,and I’d be en taking swimming lessons since I was five years old.I had been pretty confident that I could do this—up till now.

Someone called out,“Ceria, you don’t have to do this! Are you sure you want to dive?” It was one of the producers,Callie Evans.I knew I couldn’t turn back now.I couldn’t bear to see the disappointed look on the director’s face when he was told that I couldn’t do it.

At that moment, all my fears and worries broke free. The expectation of adventure and victory seemed to move all the hesitation.I swooped downwards. The air on either side of me cut into my extended arms.I knew that this wonderful feeling of flight would only last a few seconds, yet time seemed to slow down so I could hear the thrilled whoops of my crew and a round of applause that seemed to echo in my pounding ears. 16.How did the author feel at the beginning of the passage?(No more than 3 words) Excited and frightened/fearful.

17.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean in English?(No more than 15 words)

题型组合练(九) Ⅰ.七选五 (2018·山西孝义一模) It can be truly terrifying to fall through ice on a frozen lake. 1 In fact, there is more time to help you survive than you think. As you first hit the freezing water, you will almost breathe quickly at once.Remember to get control of your breathing and not to move around. 2 This means that it takes about one minute to gain control of your breathing, ten minutes to move before you get too cold. The final one is to remind you that it will take one hour before you become unconscious. Take that first minute and fully focus on your breathing.Slow it down, and then look around to see if you can locate the thickest area of ice. When you locate the ice, stretch your arms over the surface, and then begin to flutter-kick(上下打水) until your body becomes horizontal with the surface. 3 It is possible that you can live for several hours after passing out. This, however, does require some planning. You only have about 10 minutes before your muscles and nerves become too cold to work.Besides, what if you feel too weak to go on and you cannot get out? 4 The point is to encourage your coat to freeze to the ice,so that if you lose consciousness, you will keep your head out of ice. 5 A.It can help to remember the “1-10-1 principle”. B.However,if you remain calm,it can save your life. C.Remove any clothing or heavy objects that are weighting you down. D.Thus you will remain visible for rescue, even if you pass out. Austin and his father have plans to expand their community outreach efforts so they can also fight homelessness at its roots. They have also started a GoFundMe as part of their Show Love Foundation. “We’ve gotten a lot of support from the country, and what we want to do is expand and do from more than just giving out sandwiches,” TJ told CNN,saying that, finally,he and Austin hope to build a service center that deals with the many causes and symptoms of homelessness.“Mental illness, drug abuse, addiction, and things like that,” he said.“Austin and I want to build a service center and get some specialists in there that can actually help these people get back into t he workforce.”
