一、阅读理解。

A

Aging brings wrinkles, sagging bodies and frustrating forgetfulness. But getting older is not all bad for many people. Mounting evidence suggests aging may be a key to happiness. There is conflicting research on the subject, however, and experts say it may all boil down to this: Attitude is everything.

Older adults tend to be more optimistic and have a more positive outlook on life than their younger and stressed opposites. The big question is why seniors are happier.

A recent study suggests one reason: Older adults remember the past through happy memories. Aging can bring more cheer as people become more comfortable with themselves and their roles in society. The older adults said they were enjoying more time with their family, spending more time on hobbies and having greater financial security and did not have to work.

But others are doubtful about the link between happiness and growing older.

"The notion that those in old age are happiest is misleading," said Richard Easterlin, a professor of economics at the University of Southern California. "It is based on comparing people of different ages who are the same in terms of income, health, family life." Easterlin added, "When you take account of the fact that older people have lower income than younger, are less healthy, and more likely to be living alone, then you will find it hard to accept that they are happier.

In fact, scientists have found that as people age, their health declines and social networks disappear as their friends die, which can make the elderly less happy.

Even if one does give in to age's dark side, health and happiness don't always go hand-in-hand. It's all about attitude. Research by the University of Chicago’s Yang suggests that attitude about life and happiness, is partly shaped by the era in which a person was born. It turns out that individuals who adapt the best to changes also have the highest expected levels of happiness.

Despite the conflicting findings about aging and happiness, the good news is that

there doesn’t appear to be a limit to how much happiness one can achieve in one’s life. “Most people desire happiness,” Easterlin said. “To my knowledge, no one has identified a limit to attainable happiness.”

1.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?

A. The key factor to older adults’ happiness

D. The relationship between health and happiness.

2.Why are some seniors happier according to some experts?

A. They focus on what makes them feel good.

B. They have their own circle of friends.

C. They have better income after retirement.

3.What can we learn from the passage?

A. People of the same age have the same sense of happiness.

B. Attitude may play a very important role in happiness.

C. People who adapt the best to changes are more likely to be unhappy.

4.What’s the topic discussed in the passage?

I felt like I had clicked my heels three times and come to a country away from home every morning as I walked through the doors at the Embassy of Australia in Washington.Musical Aussie accents and Aboriginal art exhibits made me wonder if I had entered without a visa. In fact I was a temporary employee,a public affairs unpaid intern(实习生) for three months during the summer in order to engage myself in the culture of the country where I planned to study the next spring.

During the summer I read the Australian news every day. Working at the embassy allowed me to escape the U.S.for six hours per day and learn about what was going on across the planet. After reading the daily Australian and U.S.news I usually helped prepare a PowerPoint presentation for school kids who visited the embassy as part of a school activity. Depending on whether an embassy event was going on,I would attend weekly meetings to listen to planning and see what I could do to https://www.doczj.com/doc/a6379955.html,ually there were smaller tasks to be done such as creating visitors’ guides.

The most fantastic event in which I participated was the visit of the Australian Prime Minister. As the only American among countless Australian media and staff, I felt comfortable and was kept busy taking pictures and recording

doorstop interviews at famous sites such as the Capitol. As an intern, you will not be exposed to top-secret information, but you are on the inside when it comes to special events.

Government work is a useful addition to one’s experience. As an embassy employee you will gain invaluable knowledge while spending your summer in a culturally diverse workplace.

3.What was the author forbidden to do when the Australian Prime Minister visited America?

A.Record doorstop interviews.

B.Know top-secret information.

D.Stand among the Australian staff.

二、七选五。

When high temperatures are around the country, some things also go up.Here are four things expected to rise along with our desire to stay indoors and beat the heat.

1.Sales of goods that keep you cool

Malls are high on the list of places where people often go for free air conditioning outside home in summer.__1__ Goods related to keeping cool, like air conditioners, fans or sun care items, are very popular.

2.__2__

Pests like stink bugs(椿象)grow fast during summer heat waves, and many agriculture experts are expecting a repeat of last year's outbreak that harmed fruit and crops, particularly on the East Coast.

3.Energy bills

__3__ With all those air conditioners and fans working,it makes sense that energy bills will be higher than average.__4__ “Not only are people going to have extremely high energy bills for July,it will also put increased stress on power plants, and we're going to see more air pollution because of it,” says Angela Fritz.

4.Violence

Heat waves may cause violence, right? “Not necessarily,”says Richard Larrick,a researcher. He took a unique look at the relationship between violence and heat through https://www.doczj.com/doc/a6379955.html,rrick and his research team examined 57,294 Major League Baseball games taking place between 1962 and 2017 and found that while heat may increase violence, there always has to be a motive.“__5__ Instead, heat affects a specific form of violence,” he said.

A.Air pollution

B.Pest population

C.Rising heat is the expected response in any summer.

D.Heat does not directly lead to more violence in general.

E .More and more people are worried about their expenses.

F .As more energy is used ,air quality problems may occur.

G .So it's not a surprise that some sales jump during heat waves.

七选五 (2018·山西孝义一模) It can be truly terrifying to fall through ice on a frozen lake. 1 In fact, there is more time to help you survive than you think. As you first hit the freezing water, you will almost breathe quickly at once.Remember to get control of your breathing and not to move around. 2 This means that it takes about one minute to gain control of your breathing, ten minutes to move before you get too cold. The final one is to remind you that it will take one hour before you become unconscious. Take that first minute and fully focus on your breathing.Slow it down, and then look around to see if you can locate the thickest area of ice. When you locate the ice, stretch your arms over the surface, and then begin to flutter-kick(上下打水) until your body becomes horizontal with the surface. 3 It is possible that you can live for several hours after passing out. This, however, does require some planning. You only have about 10 minutes before your muscles and nerves become too cold to work.Besides, what if you feel too weak to go on and you cannot get out? 4 The point is to encourage your coat to freeze to the ice,so that if you lose consciousness, you will keep your head out of ice. 5 A.It can help to remember the “1-10-1 principle”. B.However,if you remain calm,it can save your life. C.Remove any clothing or heavy objects that are weighting you down. D.Thus you will remain visible for rescue, even if you pass out. 高考英语易错题专题训练-阅读理解练习题及答案解析

一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 Since we've headed into the snowy part of the year, it seems like a good time to solve a language puzzle that Eskimos have a huge number of words for snow. The idea was popularized by the now well-known expert Benjamin Lee Whorf in the 1940s. His number was approximately five Eskimo words for snow, but somehow the story was so wide spread and romantic that it got out of control and grew bigger and bigger. There are two problems with the concept of Eskimos having tons of words for snow. First, Eskimos speak at least two different languages—Inuit and Yupik. Just as we have talked about how English and many other languages developed from a common language called Proto-Indo-European, Inuit and Yupik come from a different common language called Eskimo-Aleut. So saying Eskimos have 100 words for snow is like saying Europeans have 100 words for kings or queens. It might be telling you something broad about culture, but it isn't really telling you much about language. The second problem is "What is a word?” The Inuit and Yupik languages make words in different ways from how we make words in English. For example, the West Greenlandic word 'siku,' (sea ice), is used as the root for 'sikursuit (pack ice), 'Sikuliaq (new ice), and 'sikurluk (melting ice). But it's not that West Greenlandic has so many more words for describing snow than English, it's just that West Greenlandic expresses ideas by combining meaningful units of language together into one word while English uses more phrases and compounds. We express all the same ideas; we just do it a little differently because of the way our language is built. So you're probably still wondering, "If it's not 50 or 100 or 400 words, how many is it?" Well, Woodbury lists 15 that are present in a Yupik dictionary published in 1984, but he says that depending on how you look at it this is not an exact number. It could be 12; it could be 24. But it's certainly not 100. Sometimes, the "hundred words for snow" puzzle is used to argue that because Eskimos have so many words for snow, they think about snow in ways that we can't even begin to imagine—that your language decides or limits your thoughts. Languages are just different. They don't decide what we are able to think about or are not able to think about. I can think about snow floating on water even if we don't have a word for that in English. So when you're out skiing or snowboarding or just shoveling your driveway this winter, don't believe the people who try to tell you that Eskimos have 100 words for snow. (1)Why are Eskimos thought to have so many words for snow? A. Because snow is everywhere where Eskimos live. B. Because the story about it got enriched and believed. C. Because snow is of great importance to Eskimos. D. Because Eskimos have great affection for snow. (2)How does the writer explain the first problem? A. By presenting figures. B. By making comparisons. C. By quoting sayings. D. By adopting idioms.
