You slip the key into the ignition and crank the engine to life. But before you put the car into gear, you tap a key on the keyboard mounted by the steering wheel, and your newest e-mail flashes up on the windscreen.
This seductive satyr is what you get when you cross a car and a computer. Dubbed the “network vehicle”, or net-mobile, it may soon come to a driveway near you (probably the one belonging to your rich neighbor). In a net-mobile, a motorist could tap into a regional road system but also to map out a route around rush-hour traffic snags. Drivers and passengers will be able to send and receive e-mail, track the latest sports scores or stock quotes, surf the Web, and even play video games. Or so, at least, say a number of computer-industry firms such as Microsoft, Sun, IBM and Netscape.
The modern car is already an electronic showcase on wheels. On-board microcomputers improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. They operate anti-lock brake systems, and on some cars even regulate the firmness of the shock absorbers. But much of the technology needed to add extra is available now. A prototype network vehicle, produced by a consortium of Netscape, Sun, IBM and Delco (an automotive electronics firm based in Michigan), was introduced at the recent annual computer industry show in Las Vegas.
It not only offered such desktop-computer-like services as e-mail, but allowed a driver to use them without looking away from the road. It was operated by voice commands and projected its data on to the windscreen, using the same sort of head-up display system found in modern fighter jets. Members of the consortium think a real-world network vehicle could be in production in as little as four years.
Car-makers have already begun rolling out some of the features found on these prototype net mobiles. If the driver of a General Motors car equipped with its On-Star system locks his key in the car, for example, an emergency centre can transmit a digital signal to unlock the doors. On-star also calls automatically for help if an accident triggers the airbags. Toyota and General Motors are among a growing list of firms offering such in-car navigation systems. And in Europe, BMW and Mercedes-Benz recently introduced navigation hardware that can not only plot out a route, but alert a driver to traffic jams.

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.
The Super Bowl is one of the biggest events on the advertising calendar. The battle for the National Football League’s ultimate prize attracts more viewers than anything else on American television and provides a “symbolic pulsetaking”for the advertising industry every February, says John Frelinghuysen, an analyst at Bain and Company, a consultancy. But this year the patient is in poor health. All the advertising slots (广告摊位) for the 2008 Super Bowl had been sold by the end of November 2007, despite the $ 2.6 million price of each. For 2009 the price has risen to $ 3 million, but at least, ten slots (out of 67) are still looking for a buyer.
General Motors, which ran 11 ads on Super Bowl Sunday in February 2008, has already said that it will not run any in 2009. America’s two other big carmakers, Ford and Chrysler, are likely to follow suit. Tellingly, Monster com, an online job-search company, said recently that it was buying a slot. To some extent, 2009’s Super Bowl will reflect a country in recession and indicate a hard year for the advertising industry.
Most forecasts for next year say that ad spending in America will decline by 5% or more. Much depends on the fate of the automotive industry: carmakers and dealers normally spend around $ 20 billion a year on advertising, but Chrysler and Ford scaled back their expenditure by more than 30% in the first nine months of 2008, and are expected to make further cuts in 2009 as they struggle for survival.
The car industry’s situation will hurt all media, but especially television. Analysts at BMO Capital Markets predict that total spending on television ads will fall by almost 9% next year. Only newspapers, where a decline of 12% is expected, are forecast to fare worse. Carmakers have already shifted some of their advertising spending to the Internet, and are likely to go further in 2009. Car ads make up 25% of advertising revenues for local television channels, and carmakers have been among the most consistent buyers of high-priced ads on national television.
So far local stations have been most affected by falling spending on advertising. National stations have been safer, because they operate on longer-term contracts with advertisers. But in the New Year they will also feel the chill, as companies fail to renew their contracts. Television, which has remained strong as print media have lost advertising dollars and readers to the Internet, could enter a decline of its own. “Next on the list is TV stations,”says Anthony Diclemente, a media analyst at Barclays Capital.

中大办理退辅修、成绩单等事情全攻略！（针对申请出国读书的同学，内含各类链接）【刚搞定回来，发帖积RP，欢迎转发】来源：杨嘉卉的日志 最近有同学和师弟师妹问我要怎样办成绩单，想着就写一篇日志来告诉大家啦~今天早上刚刚拿到新鲜出炉的成绩单们，为了积RP，于是将整个过程以及一些要注意的细节告诉大家。其实也不见得全面，目的只是想让没去办的同学能大概清楚流程、知道要做些什么准备，不至于办事的时候就蒙了，以至于影响了申请的进度。 一、退辅修 我之前在珠海有选了辅修，但回来南校之后，由于想着不想修那么多的课，所以就将辅修退掉，以充公选。 1、退辅修申请 - 要准备的东西有：（1）取消辅修的申请书。没有模板，就写清楚退辅修的原因，签上名字，留上联系电话，就OK。（2）《中山大学本科转专业学生课程学分认定及成绩转换申请表》在教务处的网站可以找到（https://www.doczj.com/doc/c64657115.html,/home/view.aspx?id=5210）。这一份是转专业的学生用的，但只要将抬头和相关内容改成自己需要的就OK。将辅修已经修过的课程、学时、学分、成绩等填好，拿到自己院系的教务员那边签名和学院章，然后再拿到辅修所属院系的教务员那里签名和盖章。像我们院，要求是系主任一级的人签名。于是还要等系主任有空才签名。反正这个签名和这个章就比较蛋疼，因为不知道什么时候系主任有空帮你签个名。 将这两份东西都需要用A4的纸来打印，当然签名和盖章就不能打印啦~~将他们订在一起，拿到东校区行政楼A201教务处那里交给那里的老师，说清楚你是要退辅修转学分的就OK。表格放在老师那里之后，就要等那个老师什么时候有空帮你操作一下那个教务系统了。我那天是早上交下午就帮我转好。还是觉得教务处的老师效率还是挺高的。 2.退辅修Q&A Q：退辅修有什么好处？ A：虽然交了钱，上了那么多课，现在退了，拿不到辅修证，好像挺可惜的。但是其实本来辅修证就没用，而且这些已经修过的课程是可以转为公选。所以对于那些还没修够学分，又不想上课的大四孩纸来说就是一件非常好的事情了~ Q：关于辅修、双专业、双学位的成绩单可以只打其中的一些课程吗？ A：无论是中文还是英文的成绩单，对于辅修的成绩，是遵循“全或无”的原则：即要不就全部都打出来，要不就可以全部都不打，不能够选其中的一些打而另外的一些不打。 交了申请之后，留意自己的教务系统上面，是不是已经显示你之前的辅修的课程已经全部转成“公选”了。有什么问题，可以打这个电话查询：39332173（毕业审核，公选课，辅修/双专业/双学位，公选和辅修双专业双学位的成绩管理）。

中山大学翻译学院英语（翻译）2010级 About翻译学院： 翻译学院成立于2005年，是中山大学一个比较年轻的学院。同是学习外语的学院，翻译学院没有外国语学院历史悠久，名气也是远远比不上外院。外界各种传闻说翻院是中大为了扩招才新开的（翻院算是中大人数最多的一个院了吧），而且翻院也招体育特长生，很多被调剂的学生也是被調来翻院。（说白了就是想说其实翻院里面并不全都是大家心中“考上中大的成绩佼佼者”）。各种因素导致翻院在外界有点被鄙视的感觉。但因为年轻，翻院充满着活力。翻院举办过很多大型活动，翻院人也在学校各种活动中取得很好的成绩。（这一点毫不夸张，翻院人超牛，各种活动都是数一数二的。） 翻译学院与外国语学院相比较：外院重理论，就是向搞研究方向去的，只招文科生（2010年）；翻院重实践，向应用方向去的，文理兼招（2010年）。翻院就业率去年在中大排第八，外院则是在倒数那头（当然，其中有有很多外院人继续读研读博钻研学术还没找工作的因素在里面）。 About 我的专业：英语（翻译） 一、课程介绍： 大一专业必修课程：综合英语（精读）：比较类似于高中英语课讲课文讲词组 英语泛读：每周要求读一本英语文字作品。大一以世界名著（小说、剧本）为主，据说大二大三开始读历史材料、法律文件什么的，每周考一次试 英语听力：教授听力技巧，需把自己课后听的东西汇总写listening log 英语语法：纯教授语法的课，实在是有点枯燥枯燥枯燥… 英语语音：教授地道英语发音技巧，超推荐的课！可以学到很多 英语口语：外教上课，课堂会有很多讨论之类的，以练习口语为主 第二外语：供选的有日语、法语、德语、西班牙语、葡萄牙语、韩语、阿拉伯语、俄语等 大一专业选修课程：英美社会与文化：讲授英美历史、文化知识等 文科数学：难度介于高三理科和大学高数之间 其他公共必修课：思修、史纲、计算机、体育… 二、一些心得： 1、可能有人很鄙夷英语专业，自己当初选专业就是因为喜欢英语才报的，如果你本身对英语不感冒千万别报这个专业，因为每天对着这么多英语会想吐！我刚入学也因为学的东西都围绕着“英语”转超级单一而苦恼过，甚至萌生过转专业的念头。大一这一年学的东西都是基础，比较常规，不过后来习惯了觉得还好，而且陆续而来的各种选修课会让学习丰富多彩。大二，尤其是大三后课程的专业针对性很强，会有专门的口译笔译学，应该是值得期待的。 2、专业作业的多少要看你认真程度，因为虽然常规的练习挺多，但很多老师都不检查，每天至少听1个小时的listening log也是可以只写不听混过去的（不要被1个小时吓到，习惯了根本没什么）。当然如果想学到东西作业还是要认真做的… 3、老实说翻院老师的水平有点参差，有超级好的也有比较一般的，总体来说应该不够外院雄厚。但个人觉得翻院学到的东西在以后更实际更实用（当然，每个人的发展方向也不同，如果你是学术型人才那又另当别论了）。同学的水平也是有差异的，并不是每个同学都是英语一级棒（当然一级棒的也有一大堆），有时候你需要忍受各种不正确甚至难听的口音…请不要被熏陶。 4、对想转专业的同学：都说转专业难，其实难就难在它是一项非常需要意志力的事情。除去转去外

Passage 1 One motivational analyst who became curious to know there had been such a great rise in impulse buying at supermarkets was James Vicary. He suspected that some special psychology must be going on inside the women as they shopped in supermarkets. His suspicion was that perhaps they underwent such an increase in tension when confronted with so many possibilities that they were forced into making quick purchases. He set out to find out if this was true. The best way to detect what was going on inside the shopper was through the use of a galvanometer or lie detector. That obviously was impractical. The next best thing was to use a hidden motion-picture camera and record the eye-blink rate of the women as they shopped. How fast a person blinks his eyes is a pretty good index of his state of inner tension. The average person, according to Mr. Vicary, normally blinks his eyes about 32 times a minute. If he is tense, he blinks them more frequently; and, under extreme tension, he may blink up to 50 or 60 times. If he is notably relaxed, on the other hand, his eye-blink rate may drop to a subnormal twenty or less. Mr. Vicary set up his cameras and started following the ladies as they entered the store. The results were startling, even to him. Their eye-blink rate, instead of going up to indicate mounting tension, went down and down, to a very subnormal fourteen blinks a minute. The ladies fell into what Mr. Vicary calls a hypnoidal trance, a light kind of trance that, he explains, is the first stage of hypnosis. Mr. Vicary has decided that the main cause of the trance is that the supermarket is packed with products which in former years would have been items only kings and queens could have afforded and here in this fairyland they were available to all. Art has forever been humankind?s tool for expressing the ineffable, a form of communication when words fail or are wholly inadequate. 考研这场战役终于结束了，从备考到被成功录取，中间经历太多太多个不眠夜，有时候甚至压力大会躲在角落里流泪。那时候我严重怀疑我自己是不是抑郁了，我爸妈也说有一段时间都有点不认识我了，完全像变了一个人一样，那是的我也确实挺拼的，智商不够，时间来凑，怎么也得做到笨鸟先飞吧，我当时就是这样的一个想法。还好最后我成功的收到了录取通知书，这一路的辛苦也算没有白费。所以说，既然选择考研路，那就全力以赴，争取一战拿下，如果继续二战三战，真的是压力还会倍增，所背负的东西实在太多，在这里，真心佩服那些二战三战的同学，他们所承受的应该真的是想象不到。那种感觉，我真的不想再经历第二次。怕了！怕了！ 言归正传，今天才来写这篇帖子确实是相对晚了一些，实在抱歉。接下我就给大家分享一下我备考时候的一些经验，参考书和复习方法。希望能对你们有帮助。 首先，专业课一：基础英语 基础英语中山是没有参考书的，但是根据往年的学长学姐推荐我看了以下的书 1.阅读部分 基础：专八阅读，星火华研真题均可 提高：普利斯顿出版的SAT考试辅导书最新版 冲刺:GRE阅读理解破题大全陈湛匀编著 中山的阅读有一个特色就是它考的文章和专八有很大不同，偏文学，不像专八一般是贴近社会和生活的。文章有些是直接从名著上面摘下来的，所以会涉及到比较有难度的意识流之类的写作手法，所以在备考时要多看看名著原著，不仅对阅读有帮助，对接下来的翻译也是有好处的。专八篇幅较长，题目难度适中，适合练习速度手感，打基础，sat的中山往年有在上面出过原题，（没记错应该是14年有一篇题目都没改）所以相对贴近考试一点，买最新版的说不定运气好会有原题。gre的阅读篇幅不长，题目难度大，适合练习逻辑思维能力。 2.翻译 张培基散文选1-4任意即可，多练，多积累。翻译可以说是最考能力的了，冲刺是没有什么用的，在于积累。
