College visits are important. Before you commit years of your life and money to a school, be sure you’re choosing a place that is a good match for your personality and interests. You can’t get the “feel” of a school from any guidebook, so be sure to visit the campus. Below are a few tips for getting the most out of your college visit.

Explore on Your Own

Of course you should take the official campus tour, but be sure to allow time to hang around on your own. The trained tour guides will show you a school’s selling points. But the oldest and prettiest buildings don’t give you the entire picture of a college. Try to walk the extra mile and get the complete picture of the campus.

Read the Bulletin Boards

When you visit the student center, academic buildings and residence halls, take a few minutes to read the bulletin boa rds. They provide an easy way to see what’s happening on

campus. The ads for lectures, clubs and plays can tell you what’s going on outside the classrooms.

Eat in the Dining Hall

You can get a good feel for student life by eating in the dining hall. Try to sit with students if you can. Do the students seem happy or stressed? Also, is the food good? Are there adequate healthy options? Many admission offices will give prospective students coupons (优惠券) for free meals in the dining halls.

Visit a Class in Your Major

If you know what you want to study, a class visit makes a lot of sense. You’ll get to observe other students in your field and see how involved they are in classroom discussion. Try to stay after class for a few minutes and chat with the students to get their impressions of their professors and major. Be sure to call in advance to schedule a classroom visit — most colleges don’t allow visitors to drop in at class unannounced.

Talk to Lots of Students

Your campus tour guide has been trained to market the school. Try to talk to students who aren’t getting p aid to impress you. These important conversations can often provide you with information about college life that isn’t part of the admission script. Few university officials will tell you if their students spend all weekend drinking or studying, but a group of random students might.

“OK,”I said to my daughter as she bent over her afternoon bowl of rice. “What’s going on with you and your friend J.?” J. is the leader of a group of third-graders at her camp — a position

Lucy herself occupied the previous summer. Now she’s the one on the outs and every day at snack time, she tells me all about it, while I offer the unhelpful advice all summer long.

“She’s fond of giving orders,”Lucy complained. “She’s turning everyone against me. She’s mean. And she’s fat.” “Excuse me,” I said, struggling for calm. “What did you just sa y?” “She’s fat.” Lucy mumbled (含糊地说).”We’re going upstairs,” I said, my voice cold. “We’re going to discuss this.” And up we went. I’d spent the nine years since her birth getting ready for this day, the day we’d have the conversation about this horrible word. I knew exactly what to sa y to the girl on the receiving end of the teasing (取笑), but in all of my imaginings (想象的情况), it never once occurred to me that my daughter would be the one who used the F word — Fat.

My daughter sat on her bed, and I sat beside her. “How would you feel if someone made fun of you for something that wasn’t your fault?” I began. “She could stop eating so much,” Lucy mumbled, mouthing the simple advice a thousand doctors have given overweight women for years.

“It’s not always that easy,” I said. “Everyone’s different in terms of how they treat food.” Lucy looked at me, waiting for me to go on. I opened my mouth, and then closed it. Should I tell her that, in teasing a woman’s weight, she’s joined the long tradition of critics? Should I tell her I didn’t cry when someone posted my picture and commented, “I’m sorry, but aren’t authors who write books marketed to young women supposed to be pretty?”

Does she need to know, now, that life isn’t fair? I feel her eyes on me, waiting for an answer I don’t have. Words are my tools. Stories are my job. It’s possible she’ll reme mber what I say forever, and I have no idea what to say.

So I tell her the only thing I can come up with that is absolutely true. I say to my daughter, “I love you, and there is nothing you could ever do to make me not love you. But I’m disappointed in you right now. There are plenty of reasons for not liking someone. What she looks like isn’t one of them.”

Lucy nods, tears on her cheeks. “I won’t say that again,” she tells me, and I pull her clos e, pressing my nose against her hair. As we sit there together, I pray for her to be smart and strong.

I pray for her to find friends, work she loves, a partner who loves her. And still, always, I pray that she will never struggle as I’ve struggled, that w eight will never be her cross to bear. She may not be able to use the word in our home, but I can use in my head. I pray that she will never get fat.

41. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 indicates that Lucy _______.

A. often makes fun of her friend J.

B. has turned against her friend J.

C. gets along well with her friend J.

D. has begun to compete with her friend J.

42. Why does the author want to discuss with Lucy?

A. Because she wants to offer some other helpful advice.

B. Because she has prepared the conversation for nine years.

C. Because she is really shocked at Lucy’s rudeness.

D. Because she decides to tell Lucy a similar story of her own.

43. What does the author want her daughter to know?

A. It is not easy to take the doctors’ advice to eat less.

B. Peopl e shouldn’t complain because life is unfair.

C. She herself was once laughed at for her appearance.

D. People shouldn’t be blamed for their appearance.

44. It can be inferred from the passage that _______.

A. the author earns a living by writing stories

B. the author is a fat but good-looking woman

C. the author predicted what would happen to her daughter

D. the author’s daughter agreed with her from the beginning

45. The author’s a ttitude towards her daughter can be best described as _______.

A. satisfied and friendly

Global warming may or may not be the great environmental crisis of the 21st century, but — regardless of whet her it is or isn’t —we won’t do much about it. We will argue over it and may even, as a nation, make some fairly solemn-sounding commitments to avoid it. But the more dramatic and meaningful these commitments seem, the less likely they are to be observed.

Al Gore calls global warming an “inconvenient truth,” as if merely recognizing it could put us on a path to a solution. But the real truth is that we don’t know enough to relieve global warming, and — without major technological breakthroughs —we can’t do much about it.

From 2003 to 2050, the world’s population is estimated to grow from 6.4 billion to 9.1 billion, a 42% increase. If energy use per person and technology remain the same, total energy use and greenhouse gas emissions (mainly, CO2) will b e 42% higher in 2050. But that’s too low, because societies that grow richer use more energy. We need economic growth unless we condemn (注定) the world’s poor people to their present poverty and freeze everyone else’s living standards. With modest economic growth, energy use and greenhouse emissions more than double by 2050.

No government will adopt rigid restrictions on economic growth and personal freedom (limits on electricity usage, driving and travel) that might cut back global warming. Still, politi cians want to show they’re “doing something.” Consider the Kyoto Protocol (京都议定书). It allowed countries that joined to punish those that didn’t. But it hasn’t reduced CO2 emissions (up about 25% since 1990), and many signatories (签字国) didn’t adopt tough enough policies to hit their 2008-2012 targets.

The practical conclusion is that if global warming is a potential disaster, the only solution is new technology. Only an aggressive research and development program might find ways of breaking our dependence on fossil fuels or dealing with it.

The trouble with the global warming debate is that it has become a moral problem when it’s really an engineering one. The inconvenient truth is that if we don’t solve the engineering

problem, we’re helpless.

46. What is said about global warming in the first paragraph?

A. It may not prove an environmental crisis at all.

B. It is an issue requiring worldwide commitments.

C. Serious steps have been taken to avoid or stop it.

D. Very little will be done to bring it under control.

47. According to the author’s understanding, what is A l Gore’s view on global warming?

A. It is a reality both people and politicians are unaware of.

B. It is a phenomenon that causes us many inconveniences.

C. It is a problem that can be solved once it is recognized.

D. It is an area we actually have little knowledge about.

48. Greenhouse emissions will more than double by 2050 because of ________.

A. the growth of economy

B. wasteful use of energy

C. the widening gap between the rich and poor

D. the rapid advances of science and technology

49. The author believes that, since the signing of the Kyoto Protocol, ________.

A. politicians have started to do something to better the situation

B. few nations have adopted real tough measures to limit energy use

C. reductions in energy consumption have greatly cut back global warming

D. international cooperation has contributed to solving environmental problems

50. What is the message the author intends to convey?

A. Global warming is more of a moral issue than a practical one.

B. The ultimate solution to global warming lies in new technology.

C. The debate over global warming will lead to technological breakthroughs.

D. People have to give up certain material comforts to stop global warming.

D

Everyone knows about straight-A students. We see them frequently in TV situation comedies and in movies like Revenge of the Nerds. They get high grades, all right, but only by becoming dull laborers, their noses always stuck in a book. They are not good at social communication and look clumsy while doing sports.

How, then, do we account for Domenica Roman or Paul Melendres?

Roman is on the tennis team at Fairmont Senior High School. She also sings in the choral group, serves on the student council and is a member of the mathematics society. For two years she has maintained A’s in every subject. Melendres, a freshman at the University of New Mexico, was student-body president at Valley High School in Albuquerque. He played soccer and basketball well, exhibited at the science fair, and meanwhile worked as a reporter on a local television station. Being a speech giver at the graduation ceremony, he achieved straight A’s in his regular classes, plus bonus points for A’s in two college-level courses.

How do super-achievers like Roman and Melendres do it? Brains aren’t the only answer.

“Top grades don’t always go to the brightest students,” declares Herbert Walberg, a professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, who has conducted major studies on super-achieving students. “Knowing how to make the most of your innate(天生的)abilities counts for more. Much more.”

In fact, Walberg says, students with high IQ sometimes don’t do as we ll as classmates with lower IQ. For them, learning comes too easily and they never find out how to get down.

Hard work isn’t the whole story, either. “It’s not how long you sit there with the books open,” said one of the many straight-A students we inter viewed. “It’s what you do while you’re sitting.” Indeed, some of these students actually put in fewer hours of homework time than their lower-scoring classmates.

The kids at the top of the class get there by mastering a few basic techniques that others can readily learn.

51. The underlined word “nerds” can probably be ________.

A. dull bookworms lacking sports and social skills

B. successful top students popular with their peers

C. students with certain learning difficulties

D. born leaders crazy about social activities

52. What can we conclude from the first paragraph?

A. Most TV programs and films are about straight-A students.

B. People have unfavorable impression of straight-A students.

C. Everyone knows about straight-A students from TV or films.

D. Straight-A students are well admired by people in society.

53. Some students become super-achievers mainly because ________.

A. they are born cleverer than others

B. they work longer hours at study

C. they make full use of their abilities

D. they know the shortcut to success

54. What will be talked about after the last paragraph?

A. The interviews with more students.

B. The role IQ plays in learning well.

C. The techniques to be better learners.

D. The achievements top students make.

55. What can we infer from the passage?

A. IQ is more important than hard work in study.

B. The brightest students can never get low grades.

C. Top students certainly achieve all-around developments.

D. Students with average IQ can become super-achievers.

第三部分:写作

第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

I remember walking across campus to my dad’s office every day after school for over a decade. Upon my arrival, I would find my dad sitting at his desk, surrounded by piles of papers and books. Although the empty chair sitting beside him was probably for a colleague in need of guidance or a college student seeking scheduling help, I always believed that empty chair was for me.

Dad would look up from whatever he was doing and greet me with a smile. Then, as if just at the same time, he’d place the cap on the black felt-tip pen that he used to grade papers or draft notes. The pen cap gesture was my signal. It meant my dad wanted to hear about my day. Sometimes I told him a few things; other times I went on and on about something exciting or dramatic that had happened at school. My dad would listen, nod, and sometimes add his two cents. Without fail, my dad would smile as if hearing about my day was the best part of his day.

This was the routine. From my first grade through the senior year in high school, I had after-school chats with my dad. I can’t remember a time when he said he couldn’t talk right now, even when he was working on his paper, dealing with challenging issues, or facing budget cuts.

My dad wasn’t perfect. He lost his temper sometimes. He worked too much. He experienced periods of depression. But even through the rough patches, my dad was always there for me. He was never too busy or too distracted to hear his son’s thoughts and opinions.

So though the critics say that giving a child our undivided attention creates a child who thinks the world spins around him or her, I believe otherwise: Having a parent who listens creates a child who believes he or she has a voice that matters in this world.

56. What would the author do when his father placed the cap on the black felt-tip pen?

第二节书面表达

One possible version:

Nowadays more and more people enjoy traveling abroad with their family during their holidays. With the development of economy and people’s living standard, Chinese people can afford to go abroad. Besides, more people are becoming interested in foreign cultures.

However, some people don’t behave so well in foreign countries. For example, they drop litter everywhere, as well as spitting randomly in public, which not only shows bad personal qualities, but also does great harm to the image of our country.

Personally, traveling abroad is a good opportunity to widen our vision. At the same time, everyone has the responsibility to uphold the image of our motherland, a civilized county with a long history. I suggest we inherit our ancient traditions and behave in a way that befits our values when traveling abroad.
