Spider webs are one of the most fascinating examples of animal architecture. The most beautiful and structurally ordered are the round

webs. The main function of the web is to stop

and hold flying insects, long enough for the

spider to catch them. In order to do so, the

The round web is found to have two main

Two types of silk threads are used in the web. One is highly elastic and can stretch to almost twice its original length before breaking and, for most types of spiders, is covered in glue. The other is stiffer and stronger, and is used for the radius, frames and anchor threads, which allows the web to stand forces and to keep its structural strength through a wide range of environmental conditions.

Amiya Olden could have been a poster child for a reading crisis that affects nearly 2 million Michigan residents older than 16: They read below a sixth-grade level, which makes it difficult to find jobs and to improve their lives. Among them, Amiya is one.

Amiya Olden remembers well the day she graduated from Denby High school. She handed her diploma to her mother, who read it to her. “Then when someone asked me to read it, I could remember the things she read, and I knew what I had to s ay,” recalled Amiya Olden. “When we would go out to restaurants with my aunts, and that's when I really would get upset. I would see words on the menu but I couldn't read!"

But don't feel sorry for her. She changed her life by reaching a point where she'd read enough. Two summers ago, she took charge of her life when she walked into Pro Literacy Detroit to improve her reading. Nineteen months ago, she was reading at a second-grade level; now at a fifth-grade level. Olden now splits her days between her classes at Pro Literacy and the library, where she checks out books and reads them. She says she hopes her improved reading skills will help her find a good job. And she has advice for others, who have trouble reading.

“Don't give up on it,” she said. “Eve n though it can be challenging and you might get frustrated sometimes, practice does help. If you really want to be able to go somewhere, go out to a restaurant and you have to read signs and things like that, you want to know what you want to eat and wher e you want to go… If you want to succeed in life and grow, you have to read. More important, you have to feel confident that you can.”

Sleeping in on Saturday after a few weeks of too little shuteye may feel refreshing, but it can give a false sense of security.

New research shows long-term sleep loss cannot be cured that easily. Scientists researched the effects of short- and long-term sleep loss and found that those who suffer long-term sleep loss may function normally soon after waking up, but experience steadily slower reaction times as the day goes by, even if they had tried to catch up the previous night.

The research has important safety significance in an increasingly busy society, not just for shift-workers but for the roughly one in six Americans who regularly get six hours or less of sleep a night.

“We know that staying awake 24 hours without sleep will affect your performance to do all sorts of things, and this effect equals to drinking too much when driving,” said lead researcher Dr. Daniel Cohen of Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital. But when those who suffer long-term sleep loss become all-nighters, “the harm is increased ten times,” Cohen said.

The National Institutes of Health says adults need seven hours to nine hours of sleep for good health. Regularly getting too little sleep increases the risk of health problems, including memory impairment and a weakened immune system. More immediately, too little sleep affects reaction times; sleepiness is to blame for car crashes and other accidents.

It has critically important complicated and unexpected results for anyone who works “crazy hours” and thinks they are performing fine with a few hours of weeknight sleep, said Harris, director at New York’s Montefiore Medical Center. “Don’t think you can just bank up your sleep on the weekend, because it doesn’t work that way,” he warned.
