第二部分英语语言能力提升

Ⅰ.完形填空(共20小题:每小题1分,满分20分)

In a world where comparisons happen non-stop, it is difficult to look outside yourself and to ever be 16 with who you are. There’s always someone who’s a bit 17 . The only solution is to reach 18 and measure against what Warren Buffett calls your own inner yardstick. There is no more 19 measure for comparison than who you were yesterday, last week or last decade, when you were at your 20 .

Nothing useful ever comes from comparison to others. Either you see yourself as better than someone and you get 21 , or you see someone else as better than you and you feel like all your hard work is for 22 . It is a fool’s game. Not one of us is exactly 23 . The only direct and honest comparison is 24 yourself. Everything else is apples to oranges.

My opinion is that you are only 25 to compare yourself to someone else if their life 26 is the same as your own. Good luck finding that 27 . And one thing is for sure. No matter how hard you work and how dedicated(埋头苦干的)you are, there will always be someone who can run a little faster, jump a little higher, score a little better or look a little nicer in a swimsuit. And if there’s not, you can 28 someone is coming up fast 29 you. So how can you always win in life? Become your best 30 .

Having an image of your most recent past limits is the perfect thing to 31 you to the next level. If you ran 7 flights of stairs yesterday, then do 8 today. Who 32 if the guy next to you did 15? It doesn’t make a bit of 33 . You are a more 34 person today than you were yesterday. Your own 35 is all you need.

16. A. content B. strict C. patient D. concerned

17. A. stronger B. wiser C. lazier D. better

18. A. for B. out C. inside D. up

19. A. useful B. accurate C. careful D. powerful

20. A. best B. end C. convenience D. side

21. A. satisfied B. lazy C. inspired D. busy

22. A. success B. fun C. sure D. nothing

23. A. alike B. unique C. equal D. common

When the evening is coming, my dear son and I are preparing for the tape time. “Shoes on,” I remind 9-year-old Sam. “Snakes are always waiting for the chance to kiss you. But with our feet stepped into my car, we ar e safe.” We take blankets and cups of milk and head out to the shelter that serves as our garage. This has become our bedtime habit.

I press “play”. A motherly voice fills the car. My mother and my aunt send us books on tape obtained from secondhand shops or rescued from the back of a drawer. Maybe no one in England plays cassettes anymore, but I still love them.

Sam rests on his seat. He’s sitting in the front seat. I am listening to the cassette. But I am also thinking. In a month’s time, my boy will be 10. Next year, he will be 11. And so it will go on, until he leaves me and his father and his sister to live out his own stories — as it is only right and proper he should.

Will he think back to the times when he sat in the dark in a car in Africa, listening to tales of Wales in World War II, the finest lady detective of Botswana, or a country he has visited, and

tells me he finds them “very interesting”? Will he think, when he is grown-up, the poor mum always makes the ancient tape player which is out of date work?

I like to believe that he will recall those wonderful moments. By then, perhaps, my child will realize a deep love of sharing and understanding by listening to the old tape play. I hope Sam will think that these evenings we spend in the car are a story themselves. It is his own first chapter. In time my boy will ease off the hand brake and roll out into the world. Until then, I’ll keep pressing “play”.

B. To drive in the evening.

C. To listen to tapes in a car.

D. To read books together at night.

42. How does the author think about Sam’s leaving the family in the future?

C. Absurd.

D. Unbearable.

43. In Paragraph 4, the two questions can prove that ________.

A. playing with children is fun for parents

B. listening experiences will be part of Sam’s life

C. children need to ask questions in reading

D. listening to stories is a good way to enjoy life

44. The last paragraph implies that the writer ________.

A. will ask Sam to play all by himself

B. will build up Sam’s memory of his childhood

C. won’t give up playing until Sam grows up

D. will keep the player playing all the time

45. The best titl e for the passage may be “________”.

A. A gift of a story player

B. The future life of our children

C. Deep love for the tape player

D. A childhood full of love and story

C

With child behavior, there is almost much more than it meets the eye. Because it occurs at so many different levels, child behavior that seems simple at one level can often be much more complex and meaningful at another.

For instance, a little child’s pattern of getting into cupboards, drawers and closed rooms, even after being told not to, is easily considered as bad behavior. When viewed at that level, the pattern is unacceptable and could lead to punishment. But it can be viewed at a more complex and meaningful level, namely child exploration. If a child regularly experiences an angry parent who seems determined to prevent any exploratory activities, the child will decide to continue to achieve future discoveries. When parents view this behavior as born out of natural curiosity rather than simple opposition, they are more likely to accept and appropriately monitor it. Although it may lead to warning responses to ensure the child’s safety, it is less likely to lead to punishment.

There are countless other examples. Holding a goldfish outside its bowl is foolish at one

level but al so can be seen as a young child’s attempt to express physical affection for a pet. Spending time with friends rather than family is selfish at one level but also indicates a teen’s need for independence.

The point here is that child behavior is often exhibited in simple forms that can appear to be oppositional, selfish or generally unacceptable if viewed only at that basic level. However, when viewed at a more meaningful level, the same apparently simple behavior can be seen as something larger and potentia lly more adaptive. This doesn’t mean the behavior should be ignored, especially if it is inappropriate. But looking at the bigger picture of a child’s behavior, adults might gain a fuller understanding of what they’re dealing with, which can create more flexibility in how they respond.

46. According to Paragraph 1, we can know that child behavior ________.

A. is very changeable

B. is inacceptable

C. occurs at different levels

D. is fully understood by adults

47. The example in the passage mainly shows that ________.

A. parents should properly punish child behavior

B. parents should keep their children’s safety in mind

C. children’s behavior shows their interests

D. there are different attitudes to child behavior

48. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?

A. The child will insist on doing things with determination.

B. The child will have to make frequent decisions.

C. The child will make new discoveries in the future.

D. The child will develop a strong sense of achievement.

49. It can be inferred from Paragraph 3 that ________.

A. child behavior reflects a child’s need

B. what a child does can mean differently when seen from different aspects

C. children tend to do something to show their dependence to their parents

D. children spending time with friends show their selfishness

50. What does the writer suggest parents should do with a child’s behavior?

A. Have a positive attitude towards it.

B. Ignore the improper behavior.

C. View it at the basic level.

D. Watch over it from head to foot.

D

Some people bring out the best in you in a way that you might never have fully realized on your own. My mom was one of those people.

My father died when I was nine months old, making my mom a single mother at the age of eighteen. While I was growing up, we lived a very hard life. We had little money, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Each night, she sat me on her lap and spoke the words that would change my life, “Kemmons, you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it.”

At fourteen, I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never walk again. Every day, my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me that no matter what those doctors said, I could walk again if I wanted to badly enough. She drove that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her. A year later, I returned to school — walking on my own!

When the Great Depression (大萧条) hit, my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support the both of us. At that moment, I was determined never to be poor again.

Over the years, I experienced various levels of business success. But the real turning point occurred on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951. I was dissatisfied with the second-class hotels available for families and was angry that they charged an extra $2 for each child. That was too expensive for the average American family. I told my wife that I was going to open a motel (汽车旅馆) for families that would never charge extra for children. There were plenty of doubters at that time.

Not surprisingly, mom was one of my strongest supporters. She worked behind the desk and even designed the room style. As in any business, we experienced a lot of challenges. But with my mother’s words deeply rooted in my soul, I never doubted we would succeed. Fifteen years later, we had the largest hotel system in the world — Holiday Inn. In the year 1979 my company had 1, 759 inns in more than fifty countries with an income of $ 1 billion a year.

You may not have started out life in the best situation. But if you can find a task in life worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you.

Dear Sir/Madam,

My name is Li Jin, a boy at the age of 18. I am honored to write to you and promote myself as a volunteer of CYV to get across the common sense of first aid.

I believe I am qualified. Firstly, I have a good knowledge of first aid because my parents are both doctors. They have taught me a lot about giving first aid and I have already received the First Aid Certification. What’s more, I have accumulated abundant experience in saving lives and attending to the wounded, which guarantees me to be of help in tough situations. Lastly, I am in good condition with great energy due to the constant exercises and body building.

On the whole, I am prepared to be a volunteer. I hope to get more people to learn and practice First Aid, help out people in need, improve my skills through communicating with international first aiders and trainers. Thus I will be able to reward our society as much as I can.

I'm looking forward to your earliest reply.

Li Jin
