Three-dimensional printers are fast becoming everyday devices in the United States. Three-D printers are used to make everything from automobile parts to bone replacements for human patients.

American research scientists are now working on creating replacements for living tissue. Researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina have been working on creating and manufacturing living tissue since 2003. This process is called biofabrication (生物制造). It requires special printing equipment and a special kind of ink.

Traditional printers require ink to produce an image or design on a piece of paper. For their three-D printer, the South Carolina researchers prepare complex nutritious solutions they call bio-inks. Bio-inks are made of proteins and glucose (葡萄糖), which normally provides energy for most cells of the body. The researchers also add living cells taken from the animal that will receive the new, printed tissue. The bio-inks are then added to a device that researchers call the Palmetto bio-printer.

Sarah Grace Dennis is one of the researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina. She says new technology, like the Palmetto bio-printer, is a great help to the biofabrication process. “When I got here a year ago, we were printing acellular (非细胞的) bio-inks to see if patterns could be printed. And now we are printing skeletal muscle replicaimplants(骨骼肌肉复制品移植物)that we have been implanting into rats.”

The bio-inks are placed in three dispensers (分配器), containers, inside the printer. Lasers control both the position of the printing surface and the places where the bio-ink is released. Michael Yost is a leader of the research team. He says the printing process is fully automated- machine-operated. He says that the Palmetto bio-printer makes it possible to create complex tissue types.

The researchers say bio-printing is still experimental. But they hope in a few years they may be able to print tissue to replace damaged human organs. However, there are still some concerns with biofabrication. Some scientists worry about how to get blood to the replacement tissue. The flow of blood is important to keep the printed tissue alive.

Michael Yost hopes that more people will believe in the benefits of biofabrication. “Tissue

biofabrication is a reality, and it is a reality now, and if you come here and you get to see it. You can’t touch it, but you will see it and think this is real. And this is really human.”

41. What can we learn about 3-D printers from paragraph 1?

A. They are gaining popularity quickly in the States.

B. They are playing a bigger role around the world.

A. They are bringing severe challenges to patients.

D. They are mainly used to make simple things now.

42. According to Sarah Grace Dennis, ______.

A. the biofabrication process has become perfect now

B. a-cellular bio-inks have been widely used in the US

C. new technology has made the biofabrication process possible

43. According to Michael Yost, we can infer that the Palmetto bio-printer ______.

A. can work perfectly without power

B. can only be found in the United States

C. has a bright future in medical application

D. has already been used to treat the patients

44. Which of the following is one of the problems with biofabrication according to the passage?

A. People are worried about the safety of the biofabrication process.

B. Scientists have difficulty in getting blood to the replacement tissue.

C. The price of the bio-printer is too high and most people can’t afford it.

D. Researchers can’t find enough living cells of animals to make the bio-inks.

45. We can know from the passage that ______.

A. the 3-D printer has already been applied in treating patients

B. the fast growing demand for biofabrication worries people

C. the use of the bio-printer is spreading widely around the world

D. special bio-inks are developed and bio-printing is experimented

Pete Rose, the famous baseball player, whom I have never met, taught me something so valuable that changed my life. Pete was being interviewed in spring training the year he was about to break Ty Cobb’s all-time hits record. One reporter asked, “Pete, you o nly need 78 hits to break the record. How many at-bats (轮到击球)do you think you’ll need to get the 78 hits?” Without hesitation, Pete said, “78.” The reporter yelled back, “Ah, come on, Pete. You don’t expect to get 78 hits in 78 at-bats, do you?”

Mr. Rose calmly shared his rule in life with all the reporters who were anxiously awaiting his reply. “Every time I step up to the plate, I expect to get a hit! If I don’t expect to get a hit, I have no right to step in the batter’s box in the first place! If I go up hoping to get a hit, then I probably don’t have a pr ayer of getting a hit. It is the positive expectation that has gotten me all of the hits in the first place.”

When I thought about Pete Rose’s rule and how it was applied to everyday life, I felt a little embarrassed. As a business person, I was hoping to make my sales meet the quotas (定额). As a father, I was hoping to be a good dad. As a married man, I was hoping to be a good husband.

The truth was that I was an adequate salesperson, I was not so bad as a father, and I was an okay husband. I immediately decided that being okay was not enough! I wanted to be a great salesperson, a great father and a great husband. I changed my attitude to one of positive expectations, and the results were amazing. I was fortunate enough to in a few sales trips, I won Coach of the Year in my son’s baseball league, and I share a loving relationship with my wife! Thanks, Mr. Rose!

46. Which of the following sayings can most appropriately be used to describe Mr. Rose’s rule?

A. He who doesn’t want to be a general can’t be a good soldier.

B. Before everything else, getting ready is the secret of success.

C. If you work hard enough, your dreams will come true.

D. Rome was not built in one day.

47. What can be inferred about Pete Rose from the passage?

A. He was generous to share all his rules with everyone.

B. He got all the hits he wanted because of good luck.

C. He set himself a goal of being the best.

D. He liked to dream of something impossible.

48. By saying “I was an adequate salesperson” (Para. 3) the writer probably means “______”.

A. he could make adequate money as a salesperson

B. he didn’t do an excellent job as a salesperson

C. he was good enough to be a salesperson

D. he knew how to sell goods in a proper way

49. Which of the following is NOT a role of the writer?

A. A teammate of Rose.

B. A salesman.

C. A father.

D. A baseball coach.

50. Why does the writer thank Mr. Rose at the end of the passage?

A. Because Mr. Rose showed him how to be a successful salesperson.

B. Because Mr. Rose taught him to face life with positive expectation.

C. Because Mr. Rose trained him to win Coach of the Year for his son.

D. Because Mr. Rose gave him advice on managing a happy family.

D

In the 1960s, medical researchers Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe developed a checklist of stressful events. They appreciated the tricky point that any major change can be stressful. Negative events like “serious illness of a family member” were high on the list, but so were some positive life-changing events, like marriage. When you take the Holmes-Rahe test you must remember that the score does not reflect how you deal with stress — it only shows how much you have to deal with. And we now know that the way you handle these events dramatically affects your chances of staying healthy.

By the early 1970s, hundreds of similar studies had followed Holmes and Rahe. And millions of Americans who work and live under stress worried over the reports. Somehow, the research got boiled down to a memorable message. Wo men’s magazines ran headlines like “Stress causes illness!” If you want to stay physically and mentally healthy, the articles said, avoid stressful events.

But such simplistic advice is impossible to follow. Even if stressful events are dangerous, many — like the death of a loved one — are impossible to avoid. Moreover, any warning to avoid all stressful events is a prescription (处方) for staying away from opportunities as well as trouble. Since any change can be stressful, a person who wanted to be completely free of stress would never marry, have a child, take a new job or move.

The concept that all stress makes you sick also ignores a lot of what we know about people. It assumes we’re all vulnerable (脆弱的) and passive in the face of tough conditions. But what about human initiative (主动性) and creativity? Many come through periods of stress with more physical and mental strength than they had before. We also know that a long time without change or challenge can lead to boredom, and physical and mental strain.

51. The result of Holmes-Rahe’s medical research tells us ______.

A. how to handle major events causes stress

B. what should be carried out to avoid stress

C. how to deal with sudden changes in life

D. what kind of event would cause stress

52. The studies on stress in the early 1970s led to ______.

A. great fear over the mental disorder

B. popular avoidance of stressful jobs

C. widespread worry about its harmful effects

D. a careful research into stress-related illnesses

53. Which of the following expressions is the closest in meaning to the underlined phrase in paragraph 2?

A. was summarized as

B. was quarrelled about

C. was made clear

D. was brought to an end

54. Why is “such simplistic advice” (Line 1, Paragraph 3) impossible to follow?

A. People have to get married someday.

B. You could be missing chances as well.

C. No prescription is effective in reducing stress.

D. No one can stay on the same vocation for long.

55. According to the passage people who have experienced ups and downs may become ______.

A. more flexible to deal with difficulties

B. nervous in face of various difficulties

C. physically and mentally exhausted

D. insensitive toward what happens to them

第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

When people think of New York City, most of them probably picture the attractive lifestyles of the rich and famous or think of Broadway, Times Square and other tourist attractions. However, there is another side of New York City. The summer after tenth grade, I went with my group on a mission trip to New York City for a week.

I had always known that poverty existed in major cities, but I had never seen it to a degree as high as we did there. We worked at several different locations with our small groups. One day, we served at a soup kitchen and what I saw astounded me. I couldn’t believe my eyes. We saw people from all walks of life. We met people who came there because they had no job, no home and no money.

Another day, we volunteered at a homeless shelter. We helped people there do some cleaning and spent time talking to them and listening to their stories. It was incredible to see how thankful they were to us for just spending a couple of hours talking to them.

Every person we met on that trip had a unique story. Whatever their stories were, there was a common thread we saw in them — hope and thanks. These were people who had nothing and yet they were so hopeful about their futures and they were thanking us.

My experience during that summer changed my life. I used to picture my future as containing a big house and a lot of money, but now I see my future as helping others. After college, I would really like to work for some sort of global aid organization that deals with the social issues, such as poverty and homelessness.

It is you who have opened a new world to me and taught me to see the world from different perspectives and to be grateful to people who smooth away my difficulties during that time.
