Friends are important to the children. Research shows that children who have no friends can suffer from difficulties later in life. Friendship provides children with more than just fun. By making friends, children learn how to get in touch with others and solve problems. Having friends even does good to children's study for they can help each other after class.

If parents care about their children whether they have made many friends, what matters is that the child is comfortable and happy with his friends. Parents need to understand the steps children take in building friendships.

First of all, be a friend of your child's. Good friendships start at home. Children begin to develop the necessary ability to go out and meet others through getting on with their parents. Greet the child warmly and let him know you are glad to see him. Children learn a lot from how their parents stay with them and other people.

Teach children how to solve conflicts. Being able to work out conflicts is an important skill in getting along with others. If parents know the children have a conflict, let them work it out on their own. Only step in if it is really necessary, for example, an argument is getting physical.

Give children chances to practise staying together. Make children play games that require teamwork and group problem-solving skills. For example, races are fun and provide plenty of practice in teamwork. "In what way didn't you work well together? What might you do differently next time?" For these ideas, read books such as Cooperative Sports and Games Book by Terry Orlick, and Team Building Activities for Every Group by Alanna Jones.

Encourage children to express thanks to others. Parents can encourage children to do this by setting examples for them.

I felt very sad not to be able to get the ticket to the film Titanic last Friday. I learned in the newspaper that tickets could be bought at the cinema box office in Richland Hills every day between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Because I work from 9:00 a.m.to 5:30 p.m., the only time I could go to the cinema was during my 45-minute lunch time. It is a pity that the cinema is on the other side of the town, and the bus service between my office and Richland Hills is not

very good. But if you are lucky, you can make the round(往返)trip in 45 minutes.

Last Monday I stood at the bus stop for fifteen minutes, waiting for a bus. By the time I saw one coming around the corner, there was not enough time left to make the trip-so I had to go back to the office. The same thing happened on Wednesday. On Thursday my luck changed, I got on a bus right away and arrived at the cinema in twenty minutes. But when I got there, I found a long line of people at the box office. I heard one man say he had been waiting in line for fifty-five minutes.

I found that I would not have enough time to wait in line. I caught the next bus and went back across the town.

Then on Friday I understood my only hope was to make the trip by car. It was not cheap, but I felt it would be worthwhile to see the film. The trip by car only took 10 minutes, but it felt like one hour to me. When I reached the cinema, I was delighted to see that nobody was waiting in line. But I quickly found out that it was because they had already sold out all the tickets.

The phenomenon (现象) of a bike rider getting hit by an opening car door is so common that it has its own term: dooring.

According to a study in Chicago, as many as 1 in 5 bike accidents are caused by car doors—in total, there is nearly one dooring each day in the Windy City (Chicago).

Even when the bike riders try to turn to the other direction to escape from the opening doors, they can end up getting hit by cars.

Then how can we reduce such kind of accidents? Is there any practical way to solve that problem? Yes. It's the Dutch Reach, which has been popular on the Internet recently. The Dutch Reach is a practice where instead of using your near hand—usually the driver's left hand—to open your car door, you use your far hand—your right hand.

By doing that, you will turn your body around. And you turn your head and shoulders back, so you are looking directly out. First, pass the rearview mirror. And then, you are very easily able to

look back and see if there are coming bicycles or cars or anything else. The simplicity of the approach is part of its intelligence.

Schools in the UK are cutting time spent on PE lessons because of exam pressures. Secondary school teachers said that older teenagers were especially likely to miss out, because the time spent on physical education for 14-16 -year-olds had fallen in the past five years.

Teachers said that increased pressure to produce exam results was leading to children being pulled out of PE lessons. One in three said exam pressures were behind the decline, and they said subjects such as English and Maths had been given more time at the cost of PE.

Almost all of the teachers from the 487 schools said PE should be more valued for its advantages to young people. Mental health experts also warned that cutting down on exercise could increase children's mental health problems. Cal Strode, spokesman for the Mental Health Foundation, said cutting PE time would be "short-sighted and dangerous". He said, "It is worrying to hear that PE is being cut at a time when students are facing problems with stress and anxiety in increasing numbers. There's a close relationship between mental and physical health."

Tom Madders, director of campaigns at charity Young Minds, said, "Schools' cutting down on physical education because of exam pressures is worrying. Schools that value health also do better in study, so it makes sense to keep good health, rather than putting children under more pressure."

Rising exam stress has been raised as a problem by experts who warn that children are under greater pressure because of a competitive jobs market. So cutting down physical education time is depriving young people of these advantages at a time when they need them most."

Bike-sharing allows people to borrow a bike from one place and return it at another place easily.

The event took place on a snowy January morning. Thomas Smith was walking his dog, Jack, in the park. "As I was walking, I just saw Jack running into the ice towards the ducks in the middle, and then he fell into the water and couldn't climb out," said Smith. He realized he had no choice but to try and save his dog. "Someone else told me the lake was only one meter deep, but it was at least twice that. I had to break my way through the 6-cm ice. Finally, I got Jack by the neck and pulled him out. I didn't think I had ever felt so cold by the time we got back to dry land. And when we got there, everyone was asking if Jack was okay—no one was particularly worried about me!"

A neighbor, Julie Brown, saw it all happen. "The dog went onto an icy lake. All of a sudden, it started to go under. There were crowds of people around, and they were all shouting and screaming. Technology is everywhere. We see it any place we go and, in fact, almost all of us carry some piece of technology with us every time we leave the house. What I always forget, though, is just how useful and powerful technology can be when we want to help others.

There is not a single room in my house that does not have some electronic devices (设备)lying around in it. Whenever I am at home, I am almost always using at least one electronic device. If you walked into my living room on any given day, you would find that, first, I have the television on. At the same time, I usually have my laptop resting on my knee, or I will be using my mobile phone. Even when I'm not at home I am always using my phone, and at work or in cafés, I sit down and connect to the local wireless network on my laptop.

I must say that I waste a lot of time on the computer and the time I spend on it could be much better spent if I were to take up a little online volunteering.

The technology we carry about everywhere can have a great power to do good for the world and to help others and recently I discovered just how much online volunteering there is to do in the world. From using your language skills to do translations, to developing and managing projects and helping with IT work, there is so much that so many people can do to help people in their own countries and across the world. The United Nations, in fact, has a huge page with "Volunteers Recruited" on its website.

This work can support the poor and help charities who cannot pay for staff members. Many organizations only require you to work an hour a week﹣some even less. And the support provided by online volunteers can really help make a difference to those in need.

(1)From Paragraph 2, we can know that the writer .

A. is a computer engineer

B. works in a café

C. uses technology a lot

D. likes modern music

(2)The underlined word" Recruited" in Paragraph 4 means" ".

A. Ordered

B. Visited

C. Wanted

D. Warned

(3)In the writer's opinion, people should spend more time with technology.

A. working on computer programs

B. keeping the Internet safe

C. inventing electronic products

D. helping people in need

(4)What can be the best title for the passage?

A. Online Volunteering

B. Internet Organizations

Here are some suggestions for you to bridge generation gap(代沟). Don't argue with your parents. Don't get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won't consider your ideas if you are shouting at them You can't express(表达)yourself well if you are angry. Go to some place to cool off.
