Unit 1 Will People Have Robots?

Period1 Section A (1a-2c)

Teaching aim:

1. Knowledge aim: get students to learn new words(robot, everything, paper, use, pollution, tree,

less, fewer…) and Get the usage the simple future tense.

2. Affect aim: Enable students to communicate with each other by using the simple

future tense and making predictions; stimulate students’ interests of learning

English.

3. Strategy aim: Enlarge students’ vocabulary and improve their speaking skills.

Teaching emphasis and difficulties: enable Ss to make predictions with the sentences

of “there will be….” “Will there be….” and use the simple future tense.

Teaching Procedures:

Step 1 warming up(3mins)

An English song called “whatever will be, will be” will be played and the same time T

writes the topic of this unit on the blackboard.

After the song.

T: from the song, we can see that the singer and her children imagine what they will be

in the future. Do you imagine what you will be like in the future?

Step 2: presentation (15 mins)

On the blackboard, T writes a simple time line showing four dates: today’ date ; a date

exactly one year now; a date five years from now; and a date ten years from now.

Now in 2 year in 10years

T points to the date “in 2 year” and asks the students

“What will be different in your life 2 years from now?

Will you be at this school in 2 years?

Will you live in the same house in 2 years?

Will you be in my class in a year?”

Repeat the same procedure 10 years in the future. Ask other questions to help students

think ahead

“Will you live in this town 10 years from now?

Will you be in college?

What job will you have ten years from now?

Will you have children ten years from now?”

After the students’ predictions, T underlines the word “will” in each one.

T introduces the key vocabulary and the idea of making predictions, Then T says, “in

this activity we’re going to talk about more than 2 years or ten years in the future we’re

going to talk about 100 years in the future.”

T: “What do you think the life will be like in 100 years?”(ask several students to answer

the question. If they can’t, T will ask “do you think there will be robots in people’s

homes? Will kids go to school? Will there be teachers and schools?)

T: we made several predictions about the future. Let’s read more predictions in 1a. if

you agree with the saying, please check A, if not, check D.

Step 3: pairwork (5 mins)

After the exercise, T asks one student,

T: will people have robots in their homes in the future, 100 years from now?

S1: yes, they will./ no, they won’t.

T asks Ss to work in pairs to make conversations as T and S made just now. Ss can use

the predictions in 1a.

(After discussion, T invites several groups to share their predictions with class.)

Step 4: listening (1b) (3mins)

Ask Ss to listen and circle the predictions they hear in 1a, and then play the record.

(Check the answers.)

Step 5: comparison(3mins)

(Some pictures are given to compare, which introduces more people, fewer trees, more

pollution)

T: look at these pictures, what will be there in this picture in 10 years?

S: there will be more people.

S: there will be fewer trees.

S: there will be more buildings.

S: there will be less water.

S: there will be more pollution.

Step 6: listening and fill in the chart (8 mins)

1. listen to 2a and circle the words you hear.

2. listen again. Check the predictions you hear.

3. fill the following words into the right column.(free time, money, robot, pollution,

paper, building, city, subway, relish, yogurt, onion, tomato)

Step 7: groupwork (4mins)

Ask Ss to make conversations about the predictions in 2b. (an example will be given.)

Step 8 : Talk about robots (4mins)

Discuss “What will robots help you and your family in the future?” and write your

ideas.

Invite Ss to share their opinions.

Step 9 : homework

Make predictions about yourself in 10 years.
