Once Upon a Time in AmericaLinJixin--Communication--JournalismStudent ID --51122300002Email--359817083@Mp--188********When I saw these words "This film included all the things a man will face in this world", I decided to have a look at the film "Once Upon a Time in America". It was about 4 hours to finish the whole film, then I closed my computer in silence and could not say a word. A complex feelings in the thought. Though I did not understand the logic of the story, I am shocked by the feelings. The great film was directed by the famous director Sergio Leone, who was an Italian and love American culture very much. Robert De Niro (Noodles in the movie), James Woods (Max in the movie) starring it, because of this film, I am deeply admire Robert De Niro for his typical acting style. The film tells a story about four friends ,they have a close realationship when they were young, and they acquired the wealth and prosperity by sucking the blood of miserable victims. With the growth, the contradiction are inevitable and the friendship was broken. Audience can feel the loyalty versus betrayal, love versus hate, hurt versus tolerant and so on. "There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes." I am sure of that you can obtain your own feelings. The film takes place in three time settings, 1920s, 1930s and 1960s, each placed in non-linear order. In fact, the first twenty minutes of the film are a series of illogical vignettes, seeming to have absolutely no connection other than the fact. The next, we have to guess what is going on, but we should not actually remember exactly what will be occured in this work.As we will be forced to revisit it in order to figure out this movie, which is structured like a puzzle.I have the following feelings:Love."I have a story also. A little simpler than yours. Many years ago I had a friend, a dear friend. I turned him in to save his life, but he was killed. But he wanted it that way. It was a great friendship. It went bad for him and it went bad for me too." These words was said by Deborah ,who was loved deeply by Noodles. They knew each other when young, it is a pity that she married to Max in the end. Few decades were past, when they met each other they are old. At the moment, what are their inner voices in the heart? I must say I am very sad instantly, one counld not spend his life with his lovers together. Nothing could be more inconsolable than that in the world.Friend. How to identify the word of friendship? You do everything together, such as fighting with others, robbing in the streets, killing the opponent, especially you were sent into the prison just for helping him escaped from the punishment of the law. While he married the girl you loved, he killed your friends who once saved your life. What you can do? I feel the heaviness of time, the complexity of human nature, the unbearable heavyness of being.Campared with the behind part, I prefer the earlier part. They are younger, and do everthing they want. The happy time just like the song "One day when we were young", we laughed then,we cried then, the life likes the morning in May, the time is so beautiful. But the life is changeable. We can not decide our own fate completely, what we can do are just facing it and then make our choices. This is the first time I get some true emotion from a film, through the style of Sergio Leone, such as a few words in the picture but pure montage which are engrossing and hypnotic. The film also visits the 30s of last century, where Noodles is released from prison after 12years, and starts right up again with the grown-up Max and others. Sergio Leone told us a story about American in his mind, and it was different from the facts about the real American society. Anyway, the story is perfect. And throughout the film, we return to the late 60s of American, where Noodles is an old man, painfully remembering his past, and looking more lonely than other older people. Robert De Niro showed his best ability in this film when he's old, he nails the look and feel of a man who regrets his entire life, but it was pity that he cannot turn time back. And we are the same. The music by Leone's partner Ennio Morricone is amazing as well. Just as the other movies which directed by Sergio Leone,"Once Upon a Time in the West", "Once Upon a Time...the Revolution ". He creates a sad score, filled with beauty and depth. I am immersed in the soundtrack of the film, the music is another factor to attract me. He occasionally adapts some traditional tunes throughout the film, including the Beatles' "Yesterday." Morricone has made one of his best scores for this film.We can't see through the life. Who can do it? In the end Noodles lay in the bed smoking and smiling, in this moment the audience would feel the power of the film which is amazingly narcotic, just as the power of the art.The most direct feelings in my mind:life is but a dream.。
