PreprintsubmittedtoElsevier18June20081IntroductionThenucleus11Lihasprovidedmanychallengestonuclearphysicistsoverthelastdecades,seee.g.[1]forarecentoverview.Itsbeta-decaypresentsoneofthesechallengesthathavenotyetbeenfullysolved.ThelargeQ-value(20.68MeV)fortheβdecayandthelowparticleseparationenergiesinthedaughter11Beimpliesthatmanydecaychannelsareopen.Themostextremechannel

hasafive-bodyfinalstateconsistingoftwoalphaparticlesandthreeneutrons.Decaysintothischannel,aminiaturemultifragmentation,andthefactthattheconstituents(nandα)arebarelykepttogetherallowsstructureinterpretationsintermsofclusterorfew-bodymodelstobetested.Ontheexperimentalside,athoroughinvestigationofthedecayisonlypossiblethroughtherecordingofthedecayproductsincoincidence.Thishassofaronlybeenreportedinoneearlierexperiment[2]thathadaquitelimitedangularresolution.

The11Liβ-decayinvolvesthelargestnumberofdecaychannelseverdetectedandexperimentalresultshavebeenreportedforβn[3],β2n[4],β3n[5],βt[6]andβd[7].Theestablishedchannelsinvolvetheemissionofαparticles(2α+3n),6He(6He+α+n),tritons(8Li+t),deuterons(9Li+d)andtheemis-sionof1nand2nfeedingstatesin10Beand9Be,respectively.Theβ-delayedchargedparticleemissionof11Lihasbeenthesubjectofseveralpreviousstud-ies[2,6,7,8].Thetwochannelsinvolvingcoincidentαparticleswerestudiedinonepreviousexperiment[2].The2α3nchannelwasestablishedtohavecon-tributionsfromthebreak-upoftwostatesin11Be,oneat10.59MeVandtheotherataround18.5MeV.The6Heαnchannelwasestablishedasthe6He+αbreak-upofastateatabout9.4MeVin10Befedintheneutrondecayofthe10.59MeVstatein11Be.

Bymeansofagas-detectortelescopeforparticleidentification,thedifferent6Heαn,2α3n,10Be+n,9Be+2n,8Li+tand9Li+ddecaychannelsofthe∼18.5

MeVstatein11Beanditsbranchingratiosweredetermined[8].AnR-matrixanalysisestablishedtheenergyofthisstatetobe18.15(15)MeV.Thelargereducedwidthofthe9Li+dchannelwithrespecttotheWignerlimit[9]wasinterpretedasevidenceofthe11Li(gs)β-decayingdirectlyintothe9Li+dcon-tinuum.

Arecentβ-γ-ncoincidenceexperimentusingpolarized11Li[10]determinedthespinandparityofseverallevelsfedin11Be(E<11MeV).Inthatworkthe10.59MeVlevelwasfoundtocontributetotheneutronspectrumviatransitionstothe10Be(gs)andtentativelytothefirst2+stateat3.4MeVFig.1.Partial11Liβ-decayschemeofthe11Belevelsabovethechargedparticlethreshold.Thedecaychannelsshownaretakenfrom[2,8,11].

andtotheunresolveddoubletat∼9.27MeV(4−)and9.4MeV(2+).Theβ-decayasymmetryofthesethreeneutrontransitionsconsistentlydeterminesthespinandparityofthe10.59MeVlevelin11Beas5/2−.Its210(40)keVwidthwasdeterminedfromthereaction9Be(t,p)11Be[12].

Additionalinformationaboutthedecayofthe10.59and18.15MeVstatesin11Beisobtainedfromthree-neutronemissionprobability,whichisequaltothe

branchingtothefivebody(2α3n)finalstate.Fromtheaveragebranchingratiototheonlyboundstatein11Be,andtheP2n/P1n,P3n/P1nratiosdeterminedbyAzumaetal.[5]avalueofP3n=1.9(2)%isobtained.

Thedifferentexperimentssummarizedabovepaintafairlycomplicatedpictureoftheβ-delayedchargedparticlebreak-upof11Li.Itisneitherwellunderstoodwhichlevelsin11Bearecontributingtothechargedparticlechannelsnortheirbreak-upmechanisms.Oneshouldnoticethatsignificantβ-decaystrengthinthe10-18MeVenergyrangeispredictedinshellmodelcalculations[13].

Fig.1showsschematicallythe11Liβ-fedstatesin11Beabovethechargedpar-ticlethresholdsandthedecaychannelsdiscussedaboveasestablishedpriortothisexperiment.Sinceitisstillnotclearwhetherthe9Li+dchannelproceedssequentiallythroughastatein11Beat18.15MeVordirectlyfrom11Li[8],
