Unit4 Practice of Subject Clause
Introduced by What, That and Whether
This lesson we will focus on the subject clause introduced (引导) by what, that and whether. Then we will consolidate the subject clause by oral speaking.
Step1. Leading in
Read the following proverbs and translate them into chinese. Pay attention to the sentence structure.

Conclusion:
引导主语从句,在从句中作句子成分(、或)。这时what相当于“先行词+that”,常译成“所……的”。
2. that引导主语从句,只起作用,本身无,在从句中也不充当任何句子成分。一般不能。
3. 主语从句在句首,表示“是否”时,通常用引导,而不用。
Step3. Talking --- Subject clause in pratical use.
Have a discussion in pair s. The topic is “My problem”. Talk about the problems in your study or life. The other should give advice or suggestions. Try to use subject clause to express yourself.
Useful expressions:
It is a fact that…What I want to say is…
What worries me is…What I would suggest/advise is…What I find difficult is… What you need is …
Sample:
Sara: Hello, Jane! You look so upset. What’s the matter with you?
Jane: Well, it is a fact that I am over weight. I want to lose weight but I don’t know how. What worries me is that I will become fatter and fatter. Any suggestion?
Sara: What I would suggest is that you should eat a balanced diet and do more exercise.
Jane: It sounds great. I will follow your suggestions.
Step4. Game Time --- Pass English Message.
The teacher says a sentence to the first student. Then the second student should ask first “What did she say” and the first student answers in this way:”What she said is that …”.
For example: Teacher (to student A): Tom is handsome.
Student B: What did she say?
Student A: What she said is that Tom is handsome.
C: What did she say?
B: What she said is that Tom is handsome.
