(5 points)Passage 1I don't know how many good teachers there are in the world, but I feel it is deeplyimportant for a student who is in trouble to meet a good teacher.I had a maths teacher who hates to see struggling maths students. He always ridiculesthe slow students when he gets a chance. For example, the teacher looks down upon a studentdue to her failure in maths. It's not that this student is stupid but rather she has no interest inmaths. The maths teacher always gives the girl the cold shoulder and says this girl is thestupidest student he has ever seen. One time this student got the lowest score on a mathsexam, the teacher made fun of her and then students guessed who had the worst score. Whenthat student had some questions to ask the teacher, he was impatient with her. Finally, the girlsaid to me that paradise is very far from her. Everyday she feels Eden, but there is no way toreach it. She feels that she is a tiny lantern which is placed into the water and will slowly driftout to sea until it can't be seen. What a lonely vision that is!All students have different abilities because each of them is unique. No one can foretellhis future. The teacher should learn how to treat the slower students properly, how toencourage them and not to hurt their feelings. Please leave a bit of love for these specialstudents."It is not how much we do but how much love we put in the doing. It is not how muchwe give, but how much love we put in the giving," said Mother Terasa. After all, love cancreates power.66. In this article, the writer thinks that when a student is in trouble, it is very important that the student should do his best to turn to some teachers.67. Language is a way to communicate with each other. We started to learn language when we were born. However, people are used to speaking their native language, so immigrants are having many problems between the first generation and the second generation because they don't have the same native language. Also, the second generation is losing their identity. Especially in America, there are many immigrants that came from different countries to succeed in the States. Because they suffer in lots of areas such as getting a job and trying to speak English, they want their children to speak English, not only at school, but also at home in order to be more successful. Because of this situation, their children are losing their ethnic identity and, even more, they are ignoring their parents whose English is not very good.I think most immigrants are trying to preserve their native language in their new country, but this doesn't help very much in getting a good job. My aunt didn't teach Korean to her children in order to help them succeed in the US; she did so, hopefully, to help them establish a Korean identity. Though the second generation is born in the new country, they often get confused about their identity. My cousins told me that when they visited Korea a few years ago, theyfelt different from other Koreans. They could even feel it just strolling around the street because they wore different clothes. We must realize that language is important and valuable for many reasons. Immigrants should make an effort not to be ignored by their children and to make their children understand their heritage by teaching them the parents' language. This is important in helping the second generation establish their identity.1.Which people are having trouble with language?A. Natives.B. People of the 2nd generation.C. People when born.D. Immigrants.2.Why are children ignoring their parents?A. Children have lost their identity.B. Parents cause children to suffer.C. They speak different languages.D. They have different job levels.3.The author's aunt taught Korean ________.A. so she could preserve her languageB. so she would have a job in AmericaC. to help children succeed in their new countryD. to help children keep their Korean identity4.The author's cousins felt ________.A. they were not similar to people in KoreaB. they could not get a job in AmericaC. it was all right to look and feel differentD. it was important to keep their identity5. A proper title for this passage is ________.A. The Identity of the Second GenerationB. Korean Problems in AmericaC. Learning a New Language in the USD. Keeping Your Culture in a New LandQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the same passage or dialog. Two similar-sounding English words caused trouble for a man who wanted to fly from Los Angeles to Oakland, California. His problems began at the airport in Los Angeles. He thought he heard his flight announced, so he walked to the gate, showed his ticket, and got on the plane. After flying for twenty minutes, the man began to worry. Oakland was north of Los Angeles, but the plane seemed to be heading west, and when he looked out his window all he could see was ocean. "Is this plane going to Oakland?" he asked the flight attendant (服务员). The flight attendant was shocked. "No," she said. "We're going to Auckland-Auckland, New Zealand."English is not the only language with similar-sounding words. Other languages, too, have words that can cause mistakes, especially for foreigners.Auckland and Oakland. When similar-sounding words cause a mistake, probably the best thing to do is just laugh and learn from it. Of course, sometimes it's hard to laugh. The man who traveled to Auckland instead of Oakland didn't feel like laughing. But even that mistake turned out all right in the end. The airline (航空公司) paid for the man's hotel room and meals in New Zealand and for his flight back to California. "Oh well," the man later said, "I always wanted to see New Zealand."6.The main topic of this passage is ________.A. mistakes made by people in airportsB. troubles experienced by foreigners in a new countryC. difficulties had by people when taking a planeD. problems caused by words that sound alike7.She told him the plane would arrive in ________.A. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) andD. You should decide on the best choice and then write the corresponding letter onthe Answer Sheet.Passage OneQuestions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage. You probably know about the Titanic, but it was actually just one of three state-of-the-art (先进的) ocean ships back in the day. The Olympic class ships were built by the Harland & Wolff ship makers in Northern Ireland for the White Star Line company. The Olympic class included the Olympic, the Britannic and the Titanic. What you may not know is that the Titanic wasn’t even the flagship of this class. All in all, the Olympic class ships were marvels of sea engineering, but they seemed cursed to suffer disastrous fates. The Olympic launched first in 1910, followed by the Titanic in 1911, and lastly the Britannic in 1914. The ships had nine decks, and White Star Line decided to focus on making them the most luxurious ships on the water.Stretching 269.13 meters, the Olympic class ships were wonders of naval technology, and everyone thought that they would continue to be so for quite some time. However, all suffered terrible accidents on the open seas. The Olympic got wrecked before the Titanic did, but it was the only one to survive and maintain a successful career of 24 years. The Titanic was the first to sink after famously hitting a huge iceberg in 1912. Following this disaster, the Britannic hit a naval mine in 1916 and subsequently sank as well. Each ship was coal-powered by several boilers constantly kept running by exhausted crews below deck. Most recognizable of the ship designs are the ship’s smoke stacks, but the fourth stack was actually just artistic in nature and served no functional purpose. While two of these ships sank, they were all designed with double hulls (船体) believed to make them “unsinkable”, perhaps a mistaken idea that led to the Titanic’s and the Britannic’s tragic end.The Olympic suffered two crashes with other ships and went on to serve as a hospital ship and troop transport in World War I. Eventually, she was taken out of service in 1935, ending the era of the luxurious Olympic class ocean liners.56. What does the passage say about the three Olympic class ships?A) They performed marvelously on the sea.B) They could all break the ice in their way.C) They all experienced terrible misfortunes.D) They were models of modern engineering.57. What did White Star Line have in mind when it purchased the three ships?A) Their capacity of sailing across all waters.B) The utmost comfort passengers could enjoy.C) Their ability to survive disasters of any kind.D) The long voyages they were able to undertake.58. What is said about the fourth stack of the ships?A) It was a mere piece of decoration.B) It was the work of a famous artist.C) It was designed to let out extra smoke.D) It was easily identifiable from afar.59. What might have led to the tragic end of the Titanic and the Britannic?A) Their unscientific designs.B) Their captains’ misjudgment.C) The assumption that they were built with the latest technology.D) The belief that they could never sink with a double-layer body.60. What happened to the ship Olympic in the end?A) She was used to carry troops.B) She was sunk in World War I.C) She was converted into a hospital ship.D) She was retired after her naval service.Passage TwoQuestions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage.Losing your ability to think and remember is pretty scary. We know the risk of dementia (痴呆症) increases with age. But if you have memory slip, you probably needn’t worry. There are pretty clear differences between signs of dementia and age-related memory loss. After age 50, it’s quite common to have trouble remembering the names of people, pla ces and thing quickly, says Dr. Kirk Daffner of Brigham and Woman’s Hospital in Boston. The brain ages just like the rest of the body. Certain parts shrink, especially areas in the brain that are important to learning, memory and planning. Changes in brain cells can affectcommunication between different regions of the brain. And blood flow can be reduced as blood vessels narrow.Forgetting the name of an actor in a favorite movie, for example, is nothing to worry about. But if you forget the plot of the mo vie or don’t remember even seeing it, that’s far more concerning, Daffner says. When you forget entire experiences, he says, that’s “a red flag that something more serious may be involved.” Forgetting how to operate a familiar object like a microwave oven, or forgetting how to drive to the house of a friend you’ve visited many times before can also be signs of something going wrong. But even then, Daffner says, people shouldn’t panic. There are many things that can cause confusion and memory loss, including health problems like temporary stoppage of breathing during sleep, high blood pressure, or depression, as well as medications (药物) like antidepressants. You don’t have to figure this out on your own. Daffner suggests going to your doctor to check on medications, health problems and other issues that could be affecting memory. And the best defense against memory loss is to try to prevent it by building up your brain’s cognitive (认知的) reserve, Daffner says.“Read books, go to movies, take on new hobbies o r activities that force one to think in novel ways,” he says. In other words, keep your brain busy and working. And also get physically active, because exercise is a known brain booster.61. Why does the author say that one needn’t be concerned about memory slips?A) Not all of them are symptoms of dementia.B) They occur only among certain groups of people.C) Not all of them are related to one’s age.D) They are quite common among fifty-year-olds.62. What happens as we become aged according to the passage?A) Our interaction skills deteriorate.B) Some parts of our brain stop functioning.C) Communication within our brain weakens.D) Our whole brain starts shrinking.63. Which memory-related symptom should people take seriously?A) Totally forgetting how to do o ne’s daily routines.B) Inability to recall details of one’s life experiences.C) Failure to remember the names of movies or actors.D) Occasionally confusing the addresses of one’s friends.64. What should people do when signs of serious memory loss show up?A) Check the brain’s cognitive reserve.C) Turn to a professional for assistance.B) Stop medications affecting memory.D) Exercise to improve their well-being.65. What is Dr. Daffner’s advice for combating memory loss?A) Having regular physical and mental checkups.B) Taking medicine that helps boost one’s brain.C) Engaging in known memory repair activities.D) Staying active both physically and mentally.Part V Translation(5’*5=25’)Directions:In this part there are five sentences in Chinese. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.Passage 1It is often claimed that nuclear energy is something we cannot do without. We live in a consumer society where there is an enormous demand for commercial products of all kinds. Moreover, an increase in industrial production is considered to be one solution to the problem of mass unemployment. Such an increase presumes an abundant and cheap energy supply. Many people believe that nuclear energy provides an inexhaustible and economical source of power and that it is therefore essential for an industrially developing society. There are a number of other advantages in the use of nuclear energy. Firstly, nuclear power, except for accidents, is clean. A further advantage is that a nuclear power station can be run and maintained by relatively few technical and administrative staff. The nuclear reactor represents an enormous step in our scientific evolution and, whatever the anti-nuclear group says, it is wrong to expect a return to more primitive sources of fuel. However, opponents of nuclear energy point out that nuclear power stations bring a direct threat not only to the environment but also to civil liberties.Furthermore, it is questionable whether ultimately nuclear power is a cheap source of energy. There have, for example, been very costly accidents in America, in Britain and, of course, in Russia. The possibility of increases in the cost of uranium (铀) in addition to the cost of greater safety provisions could price nuclear power out of the market. In the long run, environmentalists argue, nuclear energy wastes valuable resources and disturbs the ecology to an extent which could bring about the destruction of the human race. Thus, if we wish to survive, we cannot afford nuclear energy. In spite of the case against nuclear energy outlined above, nuclear energy programs are expanding. Such an expansion assumes a continual growth in industrial production and consumer demands. However, it is doubtful whether this growth will or can continue. Having weighed up the arguments on both sides, it seems there are good economic and ecological reasons for sources of energy other than nuclear power.31. The advocates of nuclear energy claim that nuclear energy is _________________.1.extremely dangerous2.vital in our societyC.exhaustible and expensiveD.primitive and cheap32. Some people think that nuclear energy is essential because _________________.1.there is a serious shortage of manpower2.it provides a perfect solution to mass unemploymentC.it is impossible to return to more primitive sources of fuelD.it can meet the growing demand of an industrially developing society33. Which of the following statements does the writer support?1.The demand for commercial products will not necessarily keep increasing.2.Uranium is a good source of energy for economic and ecological reasons.C.Nuclear energy provides an inexhaustible and economical source of power.D.Greater safety provisions can bring about the expansion of nuclear energy programs.34. The function of the last sentence is to ______________.1.reflect the writer's attitude2.advance the final argumentC.reverse previously expressed thoughtsD.show the disadvantages of nuclear power35. What is the writer's attitude toward nuclear energy?1.Indifferent.2.Favorable.C.Tolerant.D.Critical.E.Passage 2The American Friends Service Committee is a practical expression of the faith of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). Committed to the principles of nonviolence and justice, it seeks in its work and witness to draw on the transforming power of love. This AFSC community works to transform conditions and relationships both in the world and in ourselves, which threaten to overwhelm what is precious in human beings. We hold to the faith that conflicts can be resolved nonviolently, that bad feelings can be transformed into friendship, anger into cooperation, poverty into well-being, and injustice into dignity and participation. We believe that ultimately goodness can prevail over evil, and cruelty in all its many forms can give way.We seek to understand and address the root causes of poverty, injustice, and war. We hope to act with courage and vision in taking actions that may not be popular. We are called to confront, nonviolently, powerful institutions of violence, evil, and injustice.Such actions may engage us in creative tension in the process of basic change. We seek opportunities to help bring together enemies and to facilitate a peaceful and just resolution of conflict. We work to relieve and prevent suffering through both immediate aid and long-term development and seek to serve the needs of people on all sides of violent confrontation. We ground our work at the community level both at home and abroad in partnership with those who suffer the conditions we seek to change and informed by their strength and vision. We work with all people, the poor and the materially comfortable, the weak and the powerful in pursuit of justice. We encourage group efforts in social transformation toward a society that recognizes the dignity of each person.Seeking to transform the institutions of society, we are ourselves transformed in the process. As we work in the world around us, our awareness grows that the AFSC's own organizational life must change to reflect the same goals we urge others to achieve. We find in our life of service a great adventure. We are committed to this journey, undertaken "to see what love can do", and we are ever renewed by it.36. What is the main topic of this passage?1.The work of the American Friends Service Committee.2.The work of the Religious Society of Friends.C.The Quaker principals of nonviolence and justice.D.The transformed conditions of the AFCS community.37. What does the author think about conflicts?1.Goodness will always prevail over evil.2.Solutions should be reached without fighting.C.Conflicts overwhelm what is precious.D.Resolution takes place when people have faith.38. The author's group wishes to be brave, even when __________.1.conditions require strength and vision2.other people don't agree with themC.cruelty and evil don't give wayD.actions engage them in creative tension39. What can we infer from the passage?1.The awareness people have of the AFCS is growing.2.Conflicts are easy to be resolved nonviolently.C.The author knows society will never be transformed.D.The author knows his group isn't perfect.E.Passage 3Earthquakes may rightly be ranked as one of the most devastating forces known to man: since records began to be written down, it has been estimated that earthquake-related fatalities have numbered in millions, and that earthquake-related destruction has been beyond calculation. The greater part of such damage and loss of life has been due to collapse of buildings and the effects of rockslides, floods, fire, disease, sea waves, and other phenomena resulting from earthquakes, rather than from the quakes themselves. The great majority of all earthquakes occur in two specific geographic areas. One such area encompasses (包围) Pacific Ocean and its contiguous land masses. The other extends from the East Indies to the Atlas Mountains, including the Himalayas, Iran, Turkey, and the Alpine regions. It is in these two great belts or zones that ninety percent of all earthquakes take place; they may, however, happen anywhere at any time. This element of the unknown has for centuries added greatly to the dread and horror surrounding earthquakes, but in recent times there have been indications that earthquake prediction may be possible. By analyzing changes in animal behavior, patterns of movements in the earth's crust, variations in the force of gravity and the earth's magnetic field, and the frequency with which minor earth tremors are observed, scientists have shown increasing success in anticipating when and where earthquakes will strike. As a result, a worldwide earthquake warning network is already in operation and has helped to prepare for (and thus lessen) the vast destruction that might otherwise have been totally unexpected. It is doubtful that man will ever be able to control earthquakes and eliminate their destructiveness altogether, but as how and why earthquakes happen become better understood, man will become more and more able to deal with their potential devastation before it occurs.41. According to the passage, which of the following is true?1.Earthquakes are highly feared, but actually relatively harmless.2.There is absolutely no way to predict when or where earthquakes might occur.C.Man is now able to predict when earthquakes will happen, but not where.D.The greater part of damage is actually not caused by the quakes themselves.42. The italicized word “contiguous”in paragraph 2 most probably means _______________.1.neighboring2.exteriorC.insideD.detached43. What has added greatly to the dread and horror surrounding earthquakes?1.The written records of earthquakes.2.The two great earthquake zones.C.The great destructive power earthquakes have.D.The fact that earthquakes can happen anywhere at any time.44. By analyzing the changes that take place before an earthquake, scientists ___________.1.can now control earthquakes2.have achieved increasing success in earthquake predictionC.can now predict earthquakes with great accuracyD.are now able to eliminate the destructiveness of earthquakes45. The author’s attitude toward the possibility of earthquake prediction is ___________.1.doubtful2.concernedC.confidentD.pessimisticE.PartⅢ Vocabulary and Structure (10 points)Directions: There are a number of incomplete sentences in this part. They say the risk of a heart attack is greatest within an hour of being in traffic. The findings are based on a German study of almost 700 people who suffered heart attacks. The patients described their activities during the four days before their heart attack. Researchers found that those who had been in traffic were three times more likely to have a heart attack within one hour, compared to those who had not been in traffic. Most of those in the study had been traveling by car. But some had been on bicycles and others were on buses. Research shows that people in cars and buses are exposed to ten times the amount of pollutants as people walking on the street. That is largely because they breathe in the particles and gasses released from the vehicles in front of them. Over time, these small particles speed the buildup of a sticky substance in the blood. This can cause blockages(阻塞) to form in the arteries(动脉) around the heart and lead to a heart attack. Other studies have also linked heart trouble to stress, similar to the kind that people face while driving in heavy traffic. But the researchers of the latest study say they do not know whether the increased heart attack risk was the result of stress or pollution. They suggest it may be a combination of stress, noise and pollution. Experts say the research shows the need fro cleaner vehicles and better city planning. 1. According to the study, which of the following ways is the safest in traffic? A. Driving a car B. Walking on the street C. Taking a bus D. Riding a bicycle 2. From among the 700 people who suffered heart attacks we learn that ______. A. those who have been in traffic are three times as many as those who have not B. those who have been in traffic for more than one hour are most likely to suffer heart attacks C. the risk of a heart attack is three higher among those who have been in traffic than those who have not D. Most of the subjects (实验对象) felt uncomfortable during the four days before the attack 3. The particles released from vehicles ______. 学习资料 精品文档 A. build up in the blood B. become blockages in the arteries C. make the blood more sticky D. do harm to the heart 4. A. Reducing traffic as much as possible. B. Living away from nose. C. Planting more trees in the city. D. Making vehicles clean. ( 2 ) The angry woman stood by the station. “ The railway owes me £12,”she said to Harry Jenks, the booking clerk (订票员). “My ticket was for May 22nd, and there was no ship from Jersey that night. My daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me £12.” Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket. “ Come into the office, madam,” he said, “ I’ll just check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd .” The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right, as Harry soon discovered. There was no sailing on May 22nd. How ever had he made such a big mistake? Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child. “You look healthy,” he said to her. “ Did you have a nice holiday in Jersey?” “ Yes,” she answered. “ The beach was beautiful. And I can swim too!” “ That’s fine,” said Harry. “ My little girl can’t swim a bit yet. Of course, she’s only three-----” “ I’m four,” the child said proudly. “ I’ll soon be four and a half.” Harry turned to the mother. “ I remember your ticket, madam,” he said. “ But you didn’t get one for your daughter, did you?” “ Er, well-----” The woman looked at the child. “ I mean-----she hasn’t started school yet. She’s only four.” “ A four year old child must have a ticket, madam. A child’s return to Jersey costs----let me see----£13.50. So if the railway pays your hotel bill, you will owe £1.50.The law is the law, but since we have made a mistake-----” The woman stood up, took the child’s hand and left the office. 6. Y ou should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. In 1789 the US government passed a law which said that the land of the American Indians could never be taken from them without their agreement. One hundred years later, however, the Indians had only a very small part of the land that originally belonged to them. How did this great injustice occur? After 1812 white settlers began to move west across North America. At first, the settlers and the Indians lived in peace. However, the number of settlers increased greatly every year, and slowly the Indians began to see the white settlers as a danger to their survival. To feed themselves, the settlers killed more and more wild animals. The Indians, who depended on these animalsfor food, had to struggle against starvation. The settlers also brought with them many diseases which were common in white society, but which were new for the Indians. Great numbers of Indians became sick and died. Between 1843 and 1854 the Indian population in one area of the country went down from 100,000 to 30,000.More land was needed for the increasing number of white settlers. In Washington, the old respect for the rights of the Indians disappeared. The old promises to the Indians were broken; the federal government began to move groups of Indians from their original homelands to other, poorer parts of the country. Some Indians reacted angrily and violently to this treatment. They began to attack white settlers, and the Indian War began. For thirty years, until the late 1880s, different groups of Indians fought against the injustices of the white man. They had a few famous successes, but the result of the struggle was never in doubt. There were too many white soldiers, and they were too powerful. Many Indians were killed; the survivors were moved from their homelands to different areas of the country. It was a terrible chapter in the history of a country that promised freedom and equality to everyone.21.What is said about the land of the American Indians in the passage?A)The land of the American Indians was taken from them without their consent.B)The American Indians had very few successes in their fight against the injustice of thewhite man.C)The Us law about the land of the American Indians was violated as soon as it waspassed.D)The American Indians have finally regained the right of their own land.22.Why did American Indians begin to see the white settlers as a danger to them?A)They fought against any law protecting the right of IndiansB)The settlers killed the animals and brought new diseasesC)They took away their animals and sold them to other white peopleD) They made American Indians work hard without pay23.What does the writer mean by “the old respect for the rights of the Indians disappeared”?A)The government had a new respect for the rights of the IndiansB)The government of the US never had any respect for the rights of the IndiansC)The white settlers began to ignore the law concerning the rights of IndiansD)The government began to ignore the rights of the Indians24.The US government began to move Indians off their original land. How did the Indiansreact?A)They became sick and diedB)They began to fight the whitesC) They had to struggle against starvationD) They launched a war against the whites which lasted for a hundred years25.What is the writer’s opinion about the treatment that the Indians received from the USgovernment?A)He believes that the government always respected the rights of the IndiansB)He believes that the government should pass a law to protect the IndiansC)He believes that the government treated the Indians very unjustlyD)He believes that the government cannot be criticized for its treatment of the Indians Passage TwoQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:In the opinion of many Americans and Europeans, we began to really explore our world only in the sixteenth century. According to them, the sailors of the ancient world did not explore distant parts of the world; they did not have the necessary knowledge or skills for long sea journeys. However, the people who have this opinion are forgetting two important facts of history.First, sometimes early scientists have an idea which is correct, but scientists in later centuries do not believe it. For example, about 270 BC, a Greek scientist had an idea which we all believe today: The earth moves around the sun. But for the following 1600 years scientists did not believe this. In their opinion, the sun clearly moved around the earth. They discovered the truth again only in the fifteenth century! The second fact of history that many people forget is this: Ancient does not mean primitive. For example, the ancient Egyptians knew a great deal about the stars; they used the knowledge to find their way across the oceans. Two thousand years ago a Greek scientist who lived in Egypt calculated the distance around the earth. The results of his calculations were close the actual distance we know today! So the ancients had agreat deal of scientific knowledge. They also had skills which equaled the skills of today. For example, 1300 years ago and before, fishermen in Ireland built their boats of wood and leather. Today some fishermen in Ireland still make boats of the same design. They use tools and materials which are not very different from the tools and materials which their ancestors used. Why? The ancient design of the boats is good, and with skillful sailors, these boats can sail in all kinds of weather.Clearly, long before the sixteenth century, people had the skills, the knowledge, and the equipment which were necessary for long journeys by sea. The world did not have to wait until the sixteenth century for its first explorers!26.Which of the following statements is consistent with the passage?A)According to the writer, we only began to really explore the world in the sixteenthcenturyB)The ancient Egyptians had very little knowledge about the starsC)In the history of science, people sometimes have to discover a fact a second timeD)The writer agrees with many Americans and Europeans except for the two factsmentioned in the passage.27.Why does the writer use the example of the Greek scientist who calculated the distancearound the world?A)He wants to show the knowledge of ancient scientistsB)He wants to give an example of something which later scientists greatly improvedC)He wants to show that science has not been developing significantlyD)He wants to give an example of scientific knowledge which was available to earlyexplorers28. The word “primitive”(Line 1,Parag raph 3) means____A) underestimated B) unsophisticated C) basic D) primary29.According to the writer, why do Irish fishermen still use boats like the boats which theirancestors used 1000 years ago?A)They don’t have the money for expensive boatsB)Boats made of wood or leather are light and fastC)The necessary materials are easily availableD)The design of the boats is very good30.“People from the ancient world sailed around Africa. They even reached America.” In youropinion, how would the writer of the passage feel about the statements?A)In his opinion, they are possibleB)He does not believe themC)He has used this as an important fact to praise ancient civilizationD)In his opinion, ancient explorers did not have the skills necessary for long journeys Passage ThreeQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.Friends play an important part in our lives, and although we may take the fact of friendship for granted, we often don’t clearly understand how we make friends. While we get on well with a number of people, we are usually friends with only a very few, for example; the average among students is about 6 perperson. Moreover, a great many relationships come under the general term “friendship”. In all cases, two people like one another and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of closeness between them and the reasons for their interest in each other vary greatly. At the beginning, much depends on how people meet, and on good first impressions. As we get to know people, we consider things like age, race, looks, economic and social status, and intelligence. Although these factors are not of the greatest importance, it is more difficult to have a good relationship with people when there is a big difference in age and background. We pay attention to actual behavior, facial expression, and the way a person speaks. Friends will stand closer together and will spend more time looking at each other than ordinary acquaintances. Smiles and soft voices also express friendliness, and it is because they may give the wrong signals that shy people often have difficulty in making friends. A friendly look with the wrong facial expression can turn into an unfriendly stare, and nervousness may be wrongly understood as unfriendliness. People who do not look one in the eye are not trusted when, in fac t, they simply do not have confidence. Some relationships are a result of argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have the same ideas and beliefs, the same opinions and interests—they often talk about “being on the same wavelength”. The more closely involved people become, the more they depend on one another. People want to do friends favors and hate to let them down. Equally, friends have to learn to make allowances for each other, to put up with annoying habits, and to accept differences in opinion. Imaginegoing on a long trip with someone you occasionally meet for a drink! In contrast with marriage, there are no friendship ceremonies to strengthen the relationship between two people. But the mutual support and understanding that results from shared experiences and emotions does seem to create a close and lasting relationship, which can overcome differences in background, and break down barriers of age, class or race.31.According to the passage, a friend is __________.A)somebody we usually take for grantedB) a person with whom we often go out withC)someone with whom we occasionally go for a long tripD)not just anybody we get on well with32.Which of the following factors does the author believe are important in developingfriendship?A)Age and background. B) Economic and social position.C)Race and looks. D) Same interests and behavior.33.The passage tells us that sometimes a face with the wrong expression could be mistaken as asign of __________.A)Nervousness B) confidence C) unfriendliness D) distrust34.By saying that “some relationship are a result of argument and discussion” (Line 1, Para. 5),the author means that __________.A)bad relationships are a result of argument and discussionB)connections with people can be developed through discussion and argumentC)argument and discussion can lead to improving personal relationshipsD)arguing and discussing things will sometimes result in friendship35.We learn from the passage that __________.A)friendship can overcome difference in experienceB)there are no special ceremonies to strengthen friendshipC)putting up with differences in opinion can lead to friendshipD)friendship can be strengthened by smiles and soft voicesPassage FourQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.Overhead bridges are found in many parts of Singapore, especially in places where traffic is very heavy and crossing the road is dangerous. The purpose of these bridges is to enable pedestrians(行人) to cross roads safely. Overhead bridges are used in very much the same way as zebra crossings. They are more efficient although less convenient because people have to climb up a long flight of steps. This is inconvenient especially to older people. When pedestrians use an overhead bridge, they do not hold up traffic. However, when they cross a busy road using a zebra crossing, traffic is held up. This is why the government has built many overhead bridges to help pedestrians and to keep traffic moving at the same time. The government of Singapore has spent large sums of money building these bridges. For their own safety, pedestrians should be encouraged to use them instead of risking their lives by dashing across the road. Old people, however, may find it a little difficult climbing up and down the steps, but it still much safer than walking across the road with all the danger of moving traffic.Overhead bridges serve a very useful purpose. Pedestrians, both old and young, should make it a habit to use them. This will prevent unnecessary accidents and loss of life.36.What is the advantage of overhead bridges mentioned in this passage?A)Taller vehicle can pass under them.B)Pedestrians can climb up and have a view of the city.C)They don’t hold up traffic and are safer for pedestrians.D)They are easier and more convenient for the pedestrians.37.Why were overhead bridges built in Singapore by its government?A)Because they do not hold up traffic.B)Because they provide an easy way for the drivers to cross the road.C)Because they save money for the government.D)Because they save time for the pedestrians.38.Which of the following is true according to this passage?A)Overhead bridges are found in places where traffic is heavy.B)Overhead bridges are found in every part of Singapore.C)Overhead bridges are found in many parts of the big cities in the world.D)Overhead bridges are only found in the capital of Singapore.39.The expression “zebra crossings” in Paragraph 2 means ______.A) a safe place where pedestrians use to walk across a roadB) a big animal covered with alternating black and white stripes in AfricaC) a safe place where zebras walk aroundD) a safe place across a road for children to play a game40.What is the writer’s attitude towards overhea d bridges?A)It is inconvenient to older people to walk across the road.B)It is much safer though a little difficult climbing up and down the steps for pedestrians.C)Overhead bridges are more beautiful than zebra crossings.D)To build overhead bridges is the order of the government.Part III Vocabulary and StructureSection A (10 points)Directions:There are 20 incomplete sentences in this part.
