SYLLEPSIS
Definition 1: A rhetorical figure in which one word is used to modify two or
more other words in a sentence, with different meanings in respect to each.
Usually you must change senses dramatically from the modifying word to at
least one of the words it modifies.
Syllepsis一词来自于希腊语,意为“a taking together” ,即一个词与另外两个性质不同的词搭配。形式上符合英语使用习惯,但含义上一为直义(literary meaning) ,一为喻义(figurative meaning)。一语双叙修辞格结构的前后两部分的搭配无论从句法上还是意义上都贴切吻合,能达到“一管两 ”的效果。 巧用一词多义的特点。
