语法填空之二:状语从句 2014-9-18

Passage 1

If you know exactly what you want, the best route to a job is to get specialized training. A recent survey shows that companies like graduates in such fields as business and health care who can go to work immediately with very little on-the-job training.

T hat’s especially true of 1_______(boom) fields that are challenging for workers. At Cornell’s School of Hotel Administration, for example, bachelor’s degree graduates get an average of four or five job offers with salaries 2________(range) from the high teens to the low 20s and plenty of chances for rapid advancement. Large companies, especially, like a background of formal education 3_______(couple) with work experience.

4________ in the long run, too much specialization doesn’t pay off. Business, which has been flooded with MBAs, no longer considers the degree an automatic stamp of approval. The MBA may open doors and command a higher salary initially, but the impact of a degree washes out 5_______ five years .

As further evidence of the erosion(销蚀) of corporate (公司的) faith in specialized degrees, Michigan State’s Scheetz cites a pattern in corporate hiring practices.6_______ companies tend to take on specialists as new hires, they often seek out generalists for middle and upper-level management. “They want someone who isn’t constrained (限制)” by nuts and bolts to look at “the big picture.” says Scheetz.

This sounds suspiciously like a formal statement that you approve of the liberal-arts graduate. Time and again labor-market analysts mention a need 7______ talents that liberal-arts majors are assumed to have: writing and communication skills, organizational skills, open-mindedness and adaptability, and the ability to analyze and solve problems. David Birch claims he does not hire anybody with an MBA or an eng ineering degree. “I hire only liberal-arts people 8______ they have a less-than-canned way of doing things,” says Birch. “Liberal-arts means an academically thorough and strict program that includes literature, history, mathematics, economics, science, human behavior-plus a computer course or two. With that under your belt, you can feel free to specialize. A liberal-arts degree coupled with an MBA or some other technical

training is a very good combination in the marketplace,” says Scheetz.

Passage 2

The biggest safety threat 1_______(face) airlines today may not be a terrorist with a gun, 2_______ the man with the portable computer in business class. In the last 15 years, pilots have reported well over 100 incidents that could have been caused by electromagnetic interference (电磁干扰). The source of this interference remains unconfirmed) but increasingly, experts are pointing the blame at portable electronic devices 3_____ _____ portable computers, radio and cassette players and mobile telephones.

RTCA, an organization which advises the aviation(航空) industry, has recommended that all airline ban such devises from being used during "critical" stages of flights. Some experts have gone further, 4______(call)for a total ban during all flight. Currently, rules on using these devices are left up to individual airline. And 5_______ some airlines prohibit passengers from using such equipment during take-off and landing, most are reluctant to place a total ban, 6_______(give) that many passengers want to work during flights.

The difficulty is predicting how electromagnetic fields might affect an aircraft's computers. Experts know that portable devices give out radiation which affects those wavelengths which aircraft use for navigation and communication. But, 7______they have not been able to reproduce these effects in a laboratory, they have no way of knowing 8_____ the interference might be dangerous or not.

The fact that aircraft may be damaged by interference raises the risk that terrorists may use radio systems 9____ ______ ______ damage navigation equipment. As worrying, though, is the passenger who can't hear the instructions to turn off his radio because the music's too loud.

Passage 3

Blind imitation(模仿)is self-destruction.To those who do not recognize their unique worth, imitation appears attractive; to those who know their strength, imitation is unacceptable.
