[Key words]humor understanding cultural context 1.Definition of Humor Humor is observable in many aspects of life. The very notion of humor as well as the scope of the phenomenon varies considerably from writer to writer. We holds that all those that are laughable, amusing, funny can be called hu- nor, which is mainly in the form ofjokes, riddles, anecdotes, humorous stories, etc. 2.Definition of Cultural C:ontext According to Suo Zhenyu’s view, cultural context can be defined as the culture background to which a discourse or a speech event is related, which comprises some key factors such as history, religion, social convention and value system with the intention of communication and are different in different periods of one nation or in different nations. 3.Necessity of Cultural Context in Humor Research Halliday and Hasan emphasize that text and context are intimately relat— ed and that neither concept can be expressed clearly without the other. How people in their societies view the world and their place in it is a crucial part of understanding the text they create. The cultural context dimension of humor is essential in a research into vcrbal humor. Unfortunately, very little is known about the relationship of humor and culture. It is not possible to make accurate predictions about humor based on knowledge of a specific culture. However, people’s attention can be drawn to connections between humor and culture, and guidelines for understanding cultural context and the effect it has on humor can be毋ven. Moreover,it has been observed that cultural differences may lead to misunderstanding in in— tercuhural communication, which fuflher shows the necessity of cultural con— text in humor research. 4.Cultural Context and Humor Perception This section aims to explore the appreciation of humor in its cultural context,to examine the interaction of verbal humor with its cultural context, and to study the reason why humor cannot be understood without the help of cultural context. Elements of Cultural Context and Humor Understanding In this part, the role of such factors as history, religion, customs will be discussed in understanding humor in details. 4.1History and Humor Understanding History is one of the main factors of cultural context. To understand the language, people must associate the language with the specific history.Simi— larly, humor understanding needs the same thing. fl1 Editor:“Did you write this poem yourselF?” Contributor:“Yes.every line ofjI.1t’ Editor:“Then I’m glad to meet you.Edgar Allen Poe;I thought you were dead long ago.’’ If language learners don’t know Edgar Allen Poe is an American famous poe, they can’t understand that the editor regards the contributor as Edgar Allen Poe to satire his plagiarism. Thus this humor is produced by the satire. When language learners obtain the knowledge, they can appreciate the humor. (2)Officer0ust bawled out):“Now a man in this division will be given lib— erty this afternoon.” ’ Voice:“Give me liberty or ve me death!” Omcer:“Wh0 said that?” Voice:“Patrick Henry” This humor happens in the army. When the officer announces the order, one of the soldiers wants to get the chance of freedom,so he cleverly expresses his requirement in the sentence“ ve me liberty or give death”spoken by Patrick Henry.Without the help of historical information about the famous person and his words, the language learner can’t experience the 1.dughter. 4.2 Religion and Humor Understanding Religion is an impo ̄ant factor of cultural context, which has effects on people’s thoughts and perspectives. For example: (3)One night my husband,Ken,was in the bathroom loking for aspirin. He asked me if I had seen the bottle.1 went in and immediately pulled out of the drawer he had been rumma ng through.A little exasperated with him for always relying on me to find things,I pointed to his eyes.“Don’t you think you should start using the gift God has given you?”I demanded.Ken smiled and said lovingly,“I already do.”I mehed. Actually,in the wife’s words,“the gift God has given people’’refers to the husband’s eyes.Deliberate misunderstanding the wife’s meaning leads to amusing the wife. Thus the humor is produced. However,if they have gained the religious background knowledge, the language learners will obtain the hu- mor.Or,it is hard for the language learners to understand this humor. 4.3 Customs and Humor Understanding Custom,as the main factor of social convention, means something that is done by people in a particular society because it is traditiona1.Because the customs restrict the people’s thoughts and behaviors in the people’s lives, they can exefl their effects on humor understanding. (4)Oneman:“What do you call someone afraidto bein a smallloomfull offat guys with beards wearing red suits?” Another mall:“Santa—claustrophobic!’’ In western countries, when Christmas is coming,Santa Claus can be seen here and there. His appearance is similar to those fat guys described in the humor. If language learners know this custom about the Christmas, they can easily understand this humor.Otherwise.it’s hard for language learners to understand the humor. 5.conclusion In sum, correct understanding of these humors largely depends on the cultural context of discourse, such as historical and religious background in- formation that is owned by language learners. That is to say, when they possess enough religious background knowledge contained in the humor, language learners can interpret the humor correctly.Otherwise, the language learners cal3’t get the clear ideas about the humor.
