Unit 5 Educational SystemPassage A On EducationBackground Knowledge1.Albert EinsteinAlbert Einstein (14 March 1879–18 April 1955) was a theoretical physicist, philosopher and author who is widely regarded as one of the most influential and best known scientists and intellectuals of all time. He is often regarded as the father of modern physics. He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his services to Theoretical Physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect."(1) BiographyEinstein was born in 1879 in Ulm, a city in Germany. His father was Hermann Einstein, a salesman and engineer. His mother was Pauline Einstein. The Einsteins were non-observant Jews. Although Einstein had early speech difficulties, later in his childhood he showed great curiosity about nature and ability to solve difficult mathematical problems. After he left school, he went to Switzerland, where he graduated from the university with a degree in mathematics.Einstein and Mileva Marić married in January 1903. They had two sons but divorced on 14 February 1919. Einstein married Elsa Löwenthal in the same year and emigrated permanently to the United States in 1933.(2) Major contributions to scienceIn 1905, Einstein began to publish a series of papers which shook the whole scientific and intellectual world. His major contributions to sciences contain two aspects:a. The Special and General Theories of RelativityEinstein's early work on the theory of relativity (1905) dealt only with systems or observers in uniform motion and is referred to as the special theory of relativity; among other results, it demonstrated that two observers moving at great speed will disagree about measurements of length and time intervals made in each other's systems, that the speed of light is the limiting speed of all bodies having mass, and that mass and energy are equivalent. In 1911 he asserted the equivalence of gravitation and inertia, and in 1916 he completed his mathematical formulation of a general theory of relativity which included gravitation as a determiner of the curvature of a space-time continuum. He then began work on his unified field theory, which attempts to explain gravitation, electromagnetism, and subatomic phenomena in one set of laws; the successful development of such a unified theory, however, eluded Einstein.b. Photons(光子) and the Quantum(量子) TheoryIn addition to the theory of relativity, Einstein is also known for his contributions to the development of the quantum theory. He postulated light quanta, upon which he based his explanation of the photoelectric effect, and he developed the quantum theory of specific heat. Although he was one of the leading figures in the development of quantum theory, Einstein regarded it as only a temporarily useful structure. He reserved his main efforts for his unified field theory, feeling that when it was completed the quantization of energy and charge would be found to be a consequence of it.monwealth―Commonwealth‖is a traditional English term for a political community founded for the common good. The noun ―commonwealth‖in the text means ―public welfare; general good or advantage‖.The original phrase ―the common-wealth‖or ―the common weal‖comes from the old meaning of ―wealth‖, which is ―well-being‖. The term literally meant ―common well-being‖. In the seventeenth century the definition of ―commonwealth‖expanded from its original sense of ―public welfare‖ or ―commonweal‖, to mean ―a state in which the supreme power is vested in the people; a republic or democratic state‖.3.Related websites and webpages:/history/einstein//wiki/Albert_Einstein/Einstein.html/p-44160649.htmlTeaching DesignThe passage is an extract of the famous address ―On Education‖by Albert Einstein, at Albany 3 N.Y., on the occasion of the celebration of the tercentenary of higher education in America, October 15, 1936. The extract is presented in clear logic: the importance of school—the aim of the school—the important elements for realization.Einstein applied many long sentences with parallelism, such as that of noun phrases: ―The same work may owe its origin to fear and impulse, ambitious desire for authority and distinction, or loving interest in the object and a desire for the truth and understanding…divine curiosity…; …fear of hurt, selfish passion or desire for pleasure and satisfactio n…‖, and prepositional phrases ―This applies as well to…as to….as to…‖. Short phrases in parallelism create fast space and enhance the tone, drawing the attention of audience and readers.Besides, Einstein drew a comparison between common misunderstanding of education and the correct means, such as ―Sometimes one sees in the school simply the instrument…But that is not right…It should develop …”, ―But how shall …? Should one …? Not at all…”.3.Suggestions to Teaching Activities1) Warming-up activity:Oral discussion with guidance of the following word puzzle:First, ask students the question: ―How do you think of education in China/the university?‖Invite 2 students to give immediate replies.Second, show student the word puzzle, and divide students into groups, four in one. Unit 4 CareersPassage A Making Your Job Working for YouBackground Knowledge1. Maria BartiromoMaria Bartiromo (1967-) is an American business news anchor and interviewer. She has worked for CNBC television, reported regularly live from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange and quickly became popular. During the boom years of the stock market in the late 1990s, she was nicknamed the “Money Honey” as well as the “Econo Babe”. Bartiromo is also a columnist and writer for several business and general interest magazines and has received several awards for her writing pieces.2. GlobalizationGlobalization is a highly controversial concept. This term came into fashion in the 1980s and 1990s. It is a process of continuing integration of the countries in the world where national markets are becoming increasingly interlinked and production is likely to be operated at a global level. Due to the accelerating pace of technological change and trade liberation, globalization has exposed national economies to much more fierce and intense competition between countries. There is no denying that globalization has become a trend in the future and will have a great impact on international trade rate, international flow of capital, international data flow, international cultural exchange, international travel, etc.3. Related websites or webpages/wiki/Maria_Bartiromo/term_paper_topics/2009/04/the-character-and-impact-of-globalizatio n-trends.htmlTeaching Design2. The writing style of the passageThis is an argumentative piece of writing, in which the writer quotes many words from many influential figures to support her viewpoint, such as Thomson from Citigroup, Tom Friedman(a New York Times columnist), Tony Molla (a vice president of the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence), Michele Winn (the manager for Linder Technical Services in Indianapolis), etc. By putting all those quotations in a logical order, the author tries to convince readers the soundness of her opinion: no matter how the future work market changes, the value of capable intellectual labor is still going up and there is ample scope for those capable and skilled to display their abilities and talents. As the author adopts many quotations from others to support her opinion, the sentence structure is generally not very complicated. But what may confuse readers is what on earth the author wants to demonstrate by quoting words from different people in various fields in each paragraph. Only when readers have a whole picture about the logical outline of the article can they achieve their deep understanding of it.3. Suggestions to Teaching ActivitiesWarming-up activity:To get students familiar with the related topics of the text and have their spoken English practiced, it is helpful to design the following tasks for students to complete.Step 1: Students are required to view the following questions quickly.No.1 What are the main characteristics of globalization?No.2 What are the impacts of globalization?No.3 Will you work in a multinational company after graduation? Group A/B are responsible for question No.1, Group C/D for question No.2, Group E/F for No. 3, Group G/H for No.4 respectively. Each group members share the answers to a specific question listed above.Step 3: Four groups (A, C, E, G) are supposed to report their summarized answers or opinions, with one student from each group as the reporter.Step 4: The other 4 groups (Group B, D, F, H) give comments on the answers presented by their respective partner group just now (for example, group B comment on Group A, group D comment on Group C, etc.), see if they agree or disagree with their partner group, or if they have something more to add.Detailed Discussion of the Text1.
