Analyzing Tess of the D'Urbervillesis from Hardy's Writing Style
I.Introduction
1.1 The Author----- Thomas Hardy
Thomas Hardy was born on June 2, 1840, novelist and poet, one of the representative
writers of the English critical realism at the 19th century. He is the author across two
centuries, the early and mid-fiction works mainly to inherit and carry forward the literary
tradition of the Victorian era.His twilight years with excellent poetry pioneering 20th
century British literature.
Most of Hardy's works are devoted to a realistic presentation to life . He lived in a
changing and turbulent time. There is often bitter and sharp criticism and even open
defiance of the wicked and hypocritical people , which could destroy natural human
emotions and relationships. Meanwhile ,Hardy's works reflect the rural town of capitalism
after the British invasion,as well as the profound changes in people (especially women) to
the tragic destiny.
Most of his novels have a tragic ending. And the characters’ tragedies result from
some mysterious force of nature or fate. This shows Hardy’s pessimism and sympathy for
human .
1.2 Introduction of Tess of the D'Urbervillesis
As we all know, "Tess of the D'Urbervillesis" is the most representative of Hardy's

work in Svinjare’s house, where she got raped. At that time, she had to face the life of
poverty and to resist against the pressure comes from the society. Unfortunately,
Angel ,the person Tess fall in love with later, deserts Tess when he finds the innocent
country girl is not so pure. Through these , we can know that Tess resist her unjust fate and
suffer setbacks again and again till her death. The other thing we can know is Hardy's
novels have deep pessimistic color.
II.How Dardy's writing style shows in the novel
2.1 The society and family effects on hardy's writing style
Hence the writer’s pessimism ,his inability to find a way out of the contradictions of
life . Neither can he realize the real source of social changes nor find the right way to
future. He had to resort to the mystery fate thought, it is fatalism.
he mainly accepted the education at home. He was deeply affected by his
grandmother and mother , who lived in “super-naturalist domain in the remote country”[1]
Their personal life experience made them become a super-natural man In his perception,
an uncontrolled power above everything are everywhere. This mysterious forces control
the entire universe. It is this strength that control people’s fate, no matter how you
struggle, you will not be able to escape.
2.2 Hardy's writing style effects on Tess' tragic fate
In Tess of the D’Urbervilles, Hardy involved Tess’s fate into a mystery force. Tess
had tried great efforts to control her destiny.she works hard whether she is at home or on
the farm , or wherever . But she fails every time; she tries but always in vain. When we
