A You do not need every word to understand the meaning of what you read . In fact , too much emphasis (强调) on separate words both slows your speed and reduces your comprehension . First , any habit which slows down your silent reading to the speed at which you speak , or read aloud , is inefficient . If you point to each word as you read , or move your head , or form the words with your lips , you read poorly . Less obvious habits also hold back reading efficiency (效率) . One is “saying” each word silently by moving your tongue or throat ; another is “ hearing” each word as you read . These are habits which should have been outgrown long ago . The beginning reader is learning how letters can make words , how written words are pronounced , and how sentences are put together . Your reading purpose is quite different ; it is to understand meaning . It has been supposed that up to 75% of the words in English sentences are not really necessary for expressing the meaning . The secret of silent reading is to find out those key words and phrases which carry the thought , and to pay less attention to words which exist only for grammatical completeness . An efficient reader can grasp the meaning fr om a page at least twice as fast as he can read the page aloud . He takes in a whole phrase or thought unit at a time . If he “says” or “hears” words to himself , they are selected ones , said for emphasis . 56.This passage is mainly about .A.improving eye movementB.reading more widelyC.changing poor r eading habitsD.reading as fast as you can 57.Saying each word to yourself as you read .A.improves comprehensionB.increases reading speedC.gives too much emphasisD.reduces reading efficiency 58.Our reading purpose should be .A.to understand all the wordsB.to make fewer eye movementsC.to understand meaningD.to understand the grammatical structures 59.While reading , efficient readers usually .A.move their eyes quicklyB.take in whole phrases or thought unitsC.point at key wordsD.read only important points for speed B Despite their name , the Want Family don’t want much . They want enough money for a nice house and a holiday every year . But they don’t’ want to be millionaires . They want to do well at their jobs . But they don’t want to be the big boss . They do want to spend time improving their garden , visiting their families and taking their two kids , Nicolas and Leuan , to McDonald’s for lunch . But they don’t want to be famous . The Wants just want to be normal. That’s why they are famous . They have been selected as the most normal family in Britain . After a six-month search for the most ordinary family in Britain , the Wants were selected from hundreds of applicants . Jo hn wants a job in marketing for a food company , Claire has a part-time job renting out children’s play equipment . John doesn’t understand why they were chosen to represent ordinary English families . How are they normal ? That is not a bad question . Nearl y ev eryone does some of the things that the Wants do .But veryfew people do all of them . There have been great changes in the social structure of British life . It is becoming more common for people to have children when they are older than the Wants , and to have one child instead of two . A household with two children may be headed by a single parent , usually the mother . Or perhaps dad and mum are still together , but not married . Or maybe dad and mum are married . Dad goes out to work and mum stays at home and looks after the kids . They have traditional values —Every weekend the whole family goes to church . “What we have here is not an average family , but a traditional family,” says Cary Cooper , professor of philosophy at Lancaster University . “There is no such thing as a normal family anymore , in the way there was 20 or 30 years ago . Of course the Wants exist , but for what do we need to celebrate them ?”Perhaps because we think normal families are an endangered species . Examples of them have to be preserved (保护)to show future generations . 60.The Wants were selected as the most normal family in Britain because .A.they represent traditional Engish familiesB.they don’t want muchC.they don’t want to be famousD.they want to be normal 61.The following statements describe the great changes in British life EXCEPT that . A.people have kids later than 20 or 30 years ago B.some children are brought up by a single parent C.most families go to church every weekend D.it’s more common for families to have only one kid 62.We may infer from the passage that . A.most British families hold traditional values B.traditional families are becoming fewer and fewer C.future generations are expected to study traditional families D.traditional families no longer exist in Britain 63.What might be the most suitable title for this passage ?A.An Ordinary FamilyB.Families of Future GenerationsC.Celebration of a Family CompetitionD.A Normal But Special Family C To understand the marketing concept , it is only necessary to understand the difference between marketing and selling . Not too many years ago , most industries fixed their attention mainly on the production of goods , and then depended on “persuasive salesmanship” to move as much of these goods as possible and then change them into money . Marketing , on the other hand , focuses on the wants of customers . It begins with first understanding the preferences and demands of consumers and then producing goods that will satisfy them . This eye-on-the-consumer way is known as the marketing concept , which simply means that instead of trying to sell whatever is easiest to produce or buy for resale , the makers and dealers first try to find out what the consumer wants to buy . This concept does not mean that business is friendly or that consumer satisfaction is more important than profit in a company . Successful businessmen and producers , however , recognize that the surest route to profit is through understanding and satisfying customers . A striking example of the importance of satisfying customers presented itself in mid-1985 , when Coca-Cola changed the flavor of its drink . The non-acceptance of the new flavor by a large majority of the public brought about quick return of the Classic Coke , which was then marketed alongside the new . King Customer ruled ! 64.The marketing concept discussed in the passage is . A.the practice of turning goods into money B.the customer-centered way C.a way of making more goods D.a form of persuasive salesmanship 65.What mattered most for producers before the marketing concept was widely accepted ?A.Needs and understanding of the market .B.Production and profit of a company .C.Satisfaction of customers .D.Preference of businessmen . 66.According to the passage , the underlined word “move” (paragraph1) means .A.sellB.changeC.produceD.consume 67.What does the return of the Classic Coke best show ? A.Traditional goods have a stronger attraction to the majority of people . B.It takes time for a new product to be accepted by the public . C.Consumers with different tastes are often difficult to please . D.Products must be designed to suit the taste of the consumers . D To Lauder Exchange Program : Gaia Filicori was a student in my Humanities class for the 2002-2003 year . From the first week of classes it was obvious that Gaia was an excellent student and a very sociable young lady . She was always eager to join in class discussions . Gaia’s ability to communicate her own ideas is a skill that many of us work for a very long time to achieve . Gaia also has a deep curiosity about the world around her . The simple fact that she desires to spend a year in another country is proof enough . I have also seen her show this curiosity in class . She asked some of the most interesting and thoughtful questions of any of the students in her class . When others were content to accept a point , Gaia would see from a new angle that none of us had tried . As a student in Humanities , Gaia was requ ired to complete a group project . The project was to write a page for a Humanities textbook using text and multi-media . It was a challenging task and Gaia’s group was experiencing some difficulties . Yet , they had an easier time of it because they did not hesitate to come to me with their problems and try to work them out . As a result Gaia and her group had one of the more successful projects . The ability needed to recognize a problem and ask for help to solve it will be of great value if she is selected to be a Lauder Exchange student . Gala’s interest in the world around her will serve her well as a Lauder Exchange student . The ease with which she gets along with others and the ease with which she makes new friends will also help her as she tries to learn in a foreign setting . I have no doubts that Gaia would be a wonderful representative of the Lauder Program , Stuyvesant High School , and the United States . Perry Jones Social Studies Stuyvesant High School If you have any other questions please feel free to contact me . 212-312-4800;*************** 68.The main purpose of this letter is to A.express a student’s curiosity about the world B.introduce a student to an exchange program C.praise an excellent student D.encourage a student to join in an exchange program 69.According to the writer , Gaia seems to h ave all the following abilities EXCEPT . municating well with others B.thinking about things from different angles C.making new friends D.learning a language quickly in a foreign setting 70.Gaia shows her curiosity about the world by . A.hoping to spend a year in another country B.being content to accept a point C.getting along well with others D.serving well as a Lauder Exchange student 71.Perry Jones might be . A.Gala’s classmate B.a person in charge of Stuyvesant High School C.Gaia’s teacher D.a person in charge of Lauder Exchange Program E We sometimes think humans are the only species which can bear anxiety , but stress seems to affect the immune (免疫) system of lower animals too . In one experiment , for example , behavioral scientist Mark Lauden , at the University of Denver , gave mild electric shocks to 24 rats . Half of the animals could turn off the electricity by turning a wheel in their cage , while the other half could not . The rats in the two groups were paired so that each time one rat turned the wheel it protected both itself and its helpless partner from the shock. Lauden found that the immune reaction was below normal in the helpless rats but not in those that could turn off the electricity . What he has proved is that lack of control over an event , not the experience itself , is what weakens the immune system . Other researchers agree. Jay Weiss , a scientist at Duke University School of Medicine , has shown that animals who are allowed to control unpleasant stimuli (刺激)don’t develop sleep disorder or changes in brain chemistry of stressed rats . But if the animals are faced with situations they have no control over, they later behave passively when faced with experiences they can control . Such findings make researchers believe that the experience or feeling of helplessness is one of the most harmful factors in stress. One of the most surprising examples of how the mind can change the immune reaction was discovered by chance. In 1995 Robert Ader at the University of Rochester School of Medicine experimented on mice to avoid saccharin (糖精)by feeding them at the same time with the sweetener and a drug that while harming their immune systems caused stomach upsets . Connecting the saccharin with stomach pains , the mice quickly learned to avoid the sweetener . In order to get rid of this dislike for the sweetener, Ader fed the animals with saccharin again , this time without the drug , and was astonished to find that those mice that had received the highest amount of sweetener the first time died . He believed that saccharin alone weakened their immune systems enough to kill them. uden’s experiment showed that the immune system of those rats who could turn off the electricity .A.was strengthenedB.was not affectedC.was changedD.was weakened 73.According to the passage , the experience of helplessness causes rats to .A.try to control unpleasant stimuliB.turn off the electricityC.behave passively I controllable situationsD.become harmful 74.The reason why the mice in Ader’s experiment avoided saccharin was that .A.they disliked its tasteB.it affected their immune systemsC.it led to stomach painsD.they connected it with stomach pains 75.According to the passage , the most probable reason for the death of the mice in Ader’s experiment was that . A.they had been weakened by the saccharin B.the sweetener was poisonous to them C.the immune systems had been changed by the mind D. they had taken too much sweetener during the first experiment 第Ⅱ卷(⾮选择题,共35分) 第⼆节书⾯表达(满分25分) 假设你是李华,你所在的城市向市民征求交通⽅⾯的意见。

of Beijing-bound vehicles have come to an almost total stop on highways called the 6 and 110 that run from Inner Mongolia southeast to the nation’s capital.Bai Xiaolong,a 30-year-old truck driver, says it took him five days to make the 350-mile journey from Inner Mongolia to Tianjin. He spent much of that time reading,text-messaging and sleeping rather than speeding up.“There was one day that I didn’t move, not even an inch,”said Bai,an inhabitant of Jining in Inner Mongolia,a city at the western end of the traffic jam.Chinese officials said that the congestion is mainly because of the maintenance(维护) projects that began in mid-August and are scheduled to be completed in mid-September.Trucks carrying 8 tons or more of coal or fruit have been responsible for damaging the roadway, thus making the work necessary.Drivers who often use the route know that heavy traffic has long been a fact of life.“The problem is really that there’re too many cars and trucks and not enough lanes(车道),” Bai said.“We drivers are used to this sort of thing happening.”The two national freeways are heavily used by trucks carrying coal from the recently opened fields of Inner Mongolia to China’s coastal cities. The seemingly endless jam began on the 6 and spread to the 110,which runs parallel(平行的),when officials sought to ease the traffic on the 6.The Global Times,an English-language newspaper, said the jam had eased somewhat in the last two days, but inhabitants of the region say the congestion simply spilled out onto other roads. The congestion has created an economy of its own.Vendors(小贩) sell boxed lunches, noodles and drinking water to the travelers, often at jacked-up prices. And because of the long-standing problems along the highways, dozens of small hotels have appeared, attracting drivers who need a stop to catch more serious sleep.1.During the congestion,Bai Xiaolong did all the following EXCEPT________.A.sleepingB.text-messagingC.speeding upD.reading2..What can we infer from the text?A.Bai Xiaolong was born in Tianjin.B.The problem of traffic jams in China will be solved soon.C.Chinese officials think it is necessary to build more lanes.D.The local people don’t think the congestion has eased.3.The underlined word “jacked-up” in the last paragraph probably means “________”.A.highB.rightC.specialD.low4.What would be the best title of the passage?A.The congestion creates an economy of its ownB.Traffic jam near Beijing stretches on for daysC.The traffic has improved in BeijingD.Truck drivers in China live a hard lifeBSome people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck.I’m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don’t come into play because they do.Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that’s just the reality of how life is.However,to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And,in addition to that,in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practising. To become great at certain things,it’ll require evenmore time, time that most people won’t put in.This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love.If you don’t enjoy what you do,it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it.When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It’s sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there’s a huge chance that you’re wrong anyway.Whatever you do,if you want to become great at it,you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time.If you’re not willing to put in the time and work, don’t expect to receive any rewards.Consistent, hard work won’t guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.5.Paragraph 1 mainly talks about ________.A.the reasons for successB.the meaning of successC.the standards of successD.the importance of success6.In Paragraph 2,the underlined word “that” refers to ________.A.being good at somethingB.setting a practical goalC.putting in more timeD.succeeding in life7.Successful people suggest doing what one loves because ________.A.work makes one feel painB.one tends to enjoy his workC.one gives up his work easilyD.it takes a lot of time to succeed8. What is the main theme of the passage?A.Having a goal is vital to success.B.Being good is different from being great.C.One cannot succeed without time and practice.D.Luck,talent and family help to achieve success.答案基础落实Ⅰ.1.C 2.C 3.C 4.D 5.AⅡ.1.displayed 2.starting 3.rush 4.underground 5.explore 6.price Ⅲ.1.in 2.for 3.around 4.of 5.under能力提升1.C2.D3.A4.B5.A6.B7.D8.C。

pity, because shopping today seems to lack that personal elements which existed when the shopkeeper knew all his regular customers personally. He could, for instance, remember which brand of tea Mrs.Smith usually bought or what sort of washing powder Mrs.Jones preferred. Not only was the shop a center of buying and selling, but a social meeting place.A prosperous(繁荣的) general store might have employed four or five assistants, and so therewere very few problems in management as far as the staff(全体职员) was concerned. But now that the supermarket has replaced the general store, the job of the manager has changed completely. The modern supermarket manager has to cope with a staff of as many as a hundred, apart from all the other everyday problems of running a large business.Every morning the manager must, like the commander of an army division, carry out an inspection of his store to make sure that everything is ready for the business of the day.He must see that everything is running smoothly. He will have to give advice and make decisions as problems arise, and he must know how to get his huge staff to work efficiently with their respective responsibilities. No matter what he has to do throughout the day,the supermarket manager must be ready for any emergency that may arise. They say in the trade that you are not really an experienced supermarket manager until you have dealt with a flood,a fire,a birth and a death in your store.1.The main purpose of the passage is to show________.A.how the supermarket has replaced the old general storeB.how the old-fashioned general store is fast disappearingC.how supermarket managers deal with problems every morningD.how the role of the shop manager has undergone an overall change2.It is a pity that there are fewer old general stores now to being overweight. The WHO says a major reason for the rising obesity rates is an increase in imported foods(进口食品).It says many Pacific islanders have replaced their traditional diets of vegetables and fruits with imported processed foods.Dr.Waqanivalu is with the WHO’s South Pacific office in Suva,Fiji. He says many of the imported products lack nutritional value(缺少营养价值).But they are widely available,he says, and often cost less than healthier foods.“In some of the places, you’d be amazed to see how a bottle of Coke is cheaper than a bottle of water.I think that represents the kind of off-environment we’ve created that doesn’t really encourage or make lifestyle choices an easy choice for the population.”he said. However, the increase in imported foods is only part of the problem.Problems with agriculture production limit the availability of healthier foods. And a lack of physical activity among many Pacific islanders only adds to the obesity problem. The WHO says more than fifty percent of the population is overweight in at least ten Pacific island countries. The rate is as high as eighty percent among women in the field of American Samoa. It is estimated(估计) that about forty percent of them have health problems related to diet and nutrition. As a result, many people die very young because of problems caused by being overweight.Officials also note an increase in nutritional problems like anemia(贫血) and not enoughvitamin A in the diets of Pacific islanders.Dr.Waqanivalu says treating conditions related to obesity and diet put pressure on limited health resources and budgets, which will make the problem worse. So this problem should get the attention they deserve.1.What is mainly discussed in the passage?A.Health problems pointed out by the
