But I stopped myself and asked a question: Does owning a smartphone make my life better, or worse? I decided to try living for a time without a smartphone. So I bought an old, $30 flip phone and began my post-smartphone life. One day after I made the switch, my wife, daughter and I were in Washington visiting a museum. By afternoon, I started acting like a true addict. I used my wife's smartphone to check Gmail. The initial rush of seeing so many unread emails was spoiled ( 破坏) by a work-related message. For the next half-hour or so, I walked around thinking about that message instead of being present at the museum. I was physically there, but my mind was focused on work. The most immediate advantage of not owning a smartphone, I quickly learned, is the ability to immerse( 沉浸) yourself in social situations. Without a smartphone to look at, you don't have much of a choice but to be present, and other people — whether it's a colleague ( 同事) or a stranger on social media — can't enter your life easily at inconvenient times. So I made my short-term experiment permanent.Do I miss Google Maps? Kind of, but I've also discovered that not having it makes driving safer. I now check a map before I leave the house and write down basic directions. This keeps me focused on the road rather than the phone. If I get lost, it's nice to ask people for directions. What about Uber and Lyft? Not having them has encouraged me to ride my bike more, which has been great for my health and saved me hundreds of dollars. On the subject of money: My phone bill is now down to $30 a month. I have no data plan, no expensive phone to make payments on, no apps to buy.1. Why did the author buy the old phone?A. To save money.B. To reduce the risk of losing it.C. To break his smartphone addiction.D. To experience a smartphone-free life.2. What happened to the author at the museum that afternoon?A. He couldn't help accessing the Internet.B. He couldn't send his work-related email.C. He was urged to handle work immediately.D. He was prevented from destroying a work of art.3. What is the last paragraph mainly about?A. The disadvantages of Google Maps.B. The functions of three different apps.C. The benefits of not using a smartphone.D. The difficulties of not having a smartphone.BWhen you think of a national park, you generally picture fresh air and wild animals, right? Well, now you're going to have to add tea shops and something called “the Underground” to your definition (定义), because London, England has signed up to be the first “National Park City.”London was founded by the Romans around 2, 000 years ago and people have continually lived there since then. In all that time, however, nobody had the idea to replace all the parks with big box stores or high buildings, which means London already has a much lower urban density (密度) than most of the world's cities. Nowadays about a third of the city is green space. In July 2019, London announced its willingness to become the world's first National Park City. Now the city is moving toward the goal of achieving 50% green space by the year 2050 by connecting and increasing public parks, greening unused parking lots and the private yards of existing and new houses, and fixing some green roofs on existing buildings.“Encouraged by the aims and values of our rural (乡村的) national parks, the London National Park City is basically about making life better in the capital through both small everyday things and long - term thinking,”Daniel Raven-Ellison, who began the movement to make London a National Park City six years ago, said. “We've been doing that in London for centuries, which is why London is so green.” It's about going further to make the city greener, healthier and wilder; making the city richer in wildlife.London will have a much easier job achieving this type of green transformation ( 转变 ) than more densely-urbanized cities like Paris and New York, which have 10% and 27% green space, respectively. But that doesn't mean it's not possible — the National Park City Foundation hopes to include 25 more cities in addition to London by the year 2025. Glasgow, Scotland and Newcastle upon Tyne in northeast England are both considering becoming National Park Cities.4. What makes London more likely to become a National Park City than other cities?A. Its smaller population.B. Its locals' requirements.C. Its government's strict law.D. Its wider area of green space.5. What does Daniel try to talk about in the fourth paragraph?A. The values of newly-founded parks.B. The importance of his movement.C. The influence of green space on cities.D. The preparation for setting up a movement.6. What would be the best title for the text?A. London is leading the world in park constructionB. London becomes the world's first National Park CityC. London is listed as the world's most-visited cityD. London has built the world's first underground parkCWhen someone asks me what I do first thing in the morning I feel ashamed. Then, I have to shamefully admit that I turn my alarm off on my phone and scroll (滚屏) through WeChat. Before I've even had the chance to brush my teeth or wash my face I'm already right away attracted by whatever people are doing online. And I know it needs to change. But the last time I was asked this question was about two months ago and have I changed my ways? Not even a little bit. We all know how unproductive social media can be. So why is it so easy to get addicted to (沉溺于) a huge mass of pretty pictures, and funny behavior and ideas? And why is it so hard to change? Lisa Lewis, a doctor in Brookline tells me the answer is simple. “It's because the point of these apps is to keep you looking,” she says. “They want you to buy, and get you to follow and like. Their only purpose is to win your attention.”She says you must have a purpose when it comes to using any social media apps. “Don't just go on and scroll,” she explains. “Just like you wouldn't walk up to the refrigera tor and stare at what's inside for no reason, don't do the same with social media.” If social media is reducing your productivity and overall health, Lewis offers these steps:First, set a goal whenever you use a social media app. If you use WeChat to get inspiration to exercise, do that and then get off it. Next, you can use a timer. These days you can set a timer for how many hours a day youspend on social media. Set it and stick to it. And finally, you can create a prize to strengthen the behavior. When you set that timer and stick to it, positively strengthen the behavior with anything from tasty food to things you've been eyeing on Amazon.7. What can we say about the author according to Paragraph 1?A. She is shy about answering others' questions online.B. She cares little about other people's life.C. She works busily early in the morning.D. She is a heavy user of social media.8. Why is it difficult to beat the addiction mentioned in Paragraph 2 according to Lewis?A. The apps are aimed at attracting users.B. Social media are a good way to kill time.C. People want to communicate with friends.D. Online information is key to most people's life.9. Why does Lewis mention the refrigerator?A. To show how attractive social media could be.B. To discuss why social media reduce productivity.C. To explain one should use social media when necessary.D. To prove some content of social media is useful.10. What does the underlined part “the behavior” refer to?A. Drawing inspiration from social media.B. Using social media according to a timer.C. Trying to save money when shopping online.D. Learning to pay no attention to things you badly want.DWhen is a kid not a kid anymore? If you asked my 12-year-old daughter, the magical age would be 13, when you can no longer be considered a “child.” If you asked my 15-year-old niece, the age would be 16, when she will be able to drive a car and get an after-school job. According to the U. S. government, a child officially becomes an adult when they turn 18. That's when they can vote. But even though an 18-year-old starts paying taxes, the government does not consider that person mature enough to buy a beer. Still, even a kid who can buy a beer is not old enough to rent a car.Scientists have learned from a new study that when kids are around 18, their prefrontal cortex, which helps control impulses ( 冲动), solve problems, and organize behavior, is only halfway developed. That's not to say that kids in their late teens and early 20s can't take on these tasks, but it means that it's harder for them to do so — at least until around age 25 or so when this area of the brain fully develops.“What we're really saying is that to have a definition (定义) of when you move from childhood to adulthood looks absurd,” Peter Jones from the University of Cambridge said. “It's a much more nuanced (微妙的) change that takes place over thirty years.”This isn't a news flash for parents who have watched their teens take crazy risks while seeming unable to get their lives together until they're older. But this information throws new light on the way kids without as much support are treated. In the foster (寄养的) care system, once a child turns 18, he can no longer receivestate-backed support. And many people think this is too early for a teen to be on his own, especially a teen who has experienced a painful childhood. Because of this, some foster care advocates (提倡者) think it makes more sense for 25 to be the new legal age of adulthood.11. What does the author want to show us in Paragraph 1?A. Different age groups have different needs.B. Becoming an adult means you can do a lot of things.C. People have different opinions on becoming an adult.D. Children need to learn basic life skills to become an adult.12. What might be the purpose of the study?A. To explain why teenagers are at risk.B. To suggest a way of helping teenagers develop.C. To explore the characteristics of different age groups.D. To discover when the human brain is fully developed.13. What does the underlined word “absurd” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A. Impossible.B. Invaluable.C. Unreasonable.D. Uninteresting.14. What influence may the study have?A. It may inspire teens to be independent.B. It may allow a 20-year-old to get government support.C. It may drive the government to protect the foster care system.D. It may encourage parents to stop supporting their children at college.四.七选五The age of majority is the age that children become adults by law. This means that they are legally in control of their own actions and decisions. 1. ________ When used this way, the word “majority” means having the necessary number of years to be considered an adult. The opposite is “minority”, which means bein g a minor or child.2. ________ The law in a given place may never actually use the words “age of majority”. The age of majority is a legally fixed age and idea of adulthood which is different in different places. It may not match the actual maturity of a person's body or mind. The age of majority is 18 in most places.3. ________ Once a person reaches the age of majority, there are some things they can do that they could not do before. These may include voting, buying or drinking alcohol and driving cars on public roads. The ages when these things can be done are different.4. ________Even after a person reaches the age of majority, they cannot do whatever they want to immediately. 5.________ For example, the youngest a person is allowed to purchase alcohol is 21 in all U. S. states even though the age of majority is 18 in most states. The age of majority in the Republic of Ireland is 18, but a person must be over 21 years old to stand for election.五.完形填空You could say young Moziah Bridges has a gift for fashion, but it's more than that.

ASharon, Aged 22The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I don't know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have for one night. It's best to just learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to do.Frank, Aged 21I think almost every kid feels both anxious and excited before their first day. You will probably love it. I know I did. You should join in some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!David, Aged 19I'm not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening. But you'll get used to it. Don't be afraid of anyone; upperclassmen will pick on you more if you let them know you're afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it's really not bad at all. Don't worry.Eddie, Aged 20When I started high school I was really nervous too, especially since I had been home schooled all through middle school and didn't really know anyone. "You let that be the last time you ever walk by somebody you know without opening your mouth to speak, because even a dog can wag its tail when it passes you on the street." That sentence sounded simple but it made me become who I am.At work, I used to say hello to the president of the company and ask him how our business was doing. But I also spoke to the people in the cafe and people who cleaned the buildings, and asked them how their children were doing, for every single person deserves to be accepted, no matter how humble(卑微的) they are. I remember that after a few years of passing by the president, I had the courage to ask him for a chat. We had a great talk. At some point, when I asked him how far he thought I could go in his company, he said that if I wanted to, I could get all the way to his seat.I've become vice-president, but that hasn't changed how I treat people. I speak to people wherever I am. Speaking to people creates a pathway into their world, and it lets them come into mine, too. The day you speak to someone who has his head down and then see him lift it up and smile, you will realize how powerful it is just to open your mouth and say hello.1. What is the best title of this passage?A. The Power of Being TalkativeB. My Mother's Influence on MeC. The Power of Saying HelloD. My Way to Become Vice-president2. What can we learn from the second paragraph?A. The writer didn't say hello to everyone in the company.B. The writer made a very good impression on the president of the company.C. According to Paragraph 3, in the writer's opinion, speaking to others can _____.A. make our world much betterB. make people much happier every dayC. help people understand each other betterD. help people work muchbetterCIt's school time again! You're probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little frightened on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and even a new school. Luckily, these "new" worries only stick around for a little while. Let's find out more about going to a new school. Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you'll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often read classroom rules and school rules to you so you'll know what's allowed and what's not. Please pay close attention. You might already know a lot of people in your class on the first day, but it's a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don't know. Make the first move and you'll be glad you did, and so will your new friends!Seeing friends you haven't seen for some time can make the first day a good one. You can make the day feel special by wearing clothes that you really like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of sneakers. It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you'll need. But make sure that you pack them the night before in case you don't have time in the morning.1.What does the underlined phrase "kick off" in the second paragraph probably mean?A.start.B.study.C.find.D.teach.2.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us about?A.What to know about a new school.B.How to prepare for a new school.C.What to do on your first day of school.D.How to spend your first day of school.3.According to the passage, you usually do the following things on the first day of school except _________.A.introduce yourselfB.learn about the school rulesC.make new friendsD.go over your new lessons4.If you happen to see an old friend on the first day of school, what will you feel from the passage we know?A.Nervous.B.Sad.C.Happy.D.Worried.DYou may not know a lot of people when you start senior high school. Maybe your friends from junior high school are going to a different senior high school. Even if you know other freshmen(—年级学生), you still feel anxious that you don't know any upperclassmen. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces? Most senior high schools hold the freshman orientation(迎新会) before school actually starts. It is helpful because you not only learn your way around the building but also get to meet some of your teachers and fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces. When you talk to people at orientation, you'll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They're all new to the school and don't know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with your classmates can help you develop friendships. The work in senior high school is something freshmen are probably worried about. It builds on what you learned in junior high school, giving you a more advanced(高深的) knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it's a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help. Senior high school also has more after-school activities than junior high school, such as clubs, music and theater groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.Junior high school taught you the basics of time management and social skills while providing you with a little extra support and guidance. Senior high school gives you the chance to learn how to be more independent and responsible.1. How do the freshmen usually feel on their first day of senior high school?A. Proud.B. Nervous.C. Excited.D. Curious.2. What are freshmen probably worried about?A. The learning task.B. The ability to make friends.C. The freshman orientation.D. The relationship with teachers.3. What do after-school activities mainly help students to do?A. Develop friendships.B. Develop their interests.C. Build up their strength.D. Improve their learning ability.4. What is the last paragraph mainly about?A. What you'll learn in senior high school.B. What you learned in junior high school.C. The difference between junior high school and senior high school.D. The importance of being more independent and responsible.
AYinxu (Ruins of Yin) is the ruins of the last capital of China's Shang Dynasty (1600 BC—1046 BC). The capital served 255 years for 12 kings. It shows the golden age of early Chinese culture, crafts and science, a time of great prosperity(繁荣) during the Chinese Bronze Age(青铜时代).Discovered in 1899, Yinxu is one of the oldest and largest archeological sites(考古遗址) in China and is one of the historical capitals of China and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It lies in central Henan Province, near the modern city of Anyang, and is open to the public as the Garden Museum of Yinxu. It is famous as the source of oracle bone script(甲骨文), the earliest recorded form of Chinese writing. The oracle bone script has recorded almost everything from dream-explaining to events such as harvests, birth of a child, the weather and the success of military campaigns.Over 3,000 tombs, 2,200 pits, and 200 houses have been dug out at Yinxu. The large number of burial accessories found there shows the high level of the Shang crafts industry. The site includes a main palace and an ancient tomb. Besides, there are a number of large buildings, at least 53 of which have been dug out.Yinxu has seen many years of research, first researched in the late 1920s to the early 1930s and most recently by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.1. During which period may Yin have been the capital of China's Shang Dynasty?A. 1600 BC-1500 BC.B. 1500 BC—1200 BC.C. 1200 BC-1050 BC.D. 1050 BC—850 BC.2. From the passage, we can know that Yinxu ________.A. was discovered in the 1920sB. can be visited by the publicC. now proved the failure of the Shang DynastyD. was the last capital of China's Shang Dynasty3. We can infer from the passage that ________.A. there are 200 houses in YinxuB. many things are still to be dug outC. Anyang is a city of the Shang DynastyD. no research has been carried out on YinxuBTwo-thirds of the world's major rivers have now been disrupted(中断) with more than 50,000 dams in an attempt to store water and provide power. In the US, there are more than 85,000 dams, disrupting large and small rivers and in most cases transforming natural flow. The most famous of these, the Hoover Dam constructed in the 1930's, is mainly responsible for the fact that the Colorado River no longer reaches the ocean.Dams, besides all their attractive benefits, also have negative impacts. Creating a reservoir(水库) means a large area must be flooded. Communities may lose their land houses and cultural relies(遗址). Down stream of a dam, the flow may be reduced so that farmers cannot irrigate their fields.Environmentally, the new reservoir can be a paradise for wildlife especially birds. However, it can cause greenhouse gas emissions(排放) and poison the water for fish. Also, the dramatic rise and fall of water levels during dam releases is too extreme for plants and animals to cope with, resulting in dead zones around the shores of reservoirs. Fish that lay their eggs in the shallows, for example, may find a few hours later that those sites are high and dry.Dams don't just block water flow. The flow may be reduced so that farmers will have great trouble getting water for their fields. They also prevent fish migrations and are a barrier to sediment(沉淀物) flows. Instead of rushing downriver, sediments get backed up against the dam wall, which causes the reservoir level to increase over time. However, sediments which are rich in nutrients have become a problem. The fertility of the entire system can be influenced be influenced by soils lost during seasonal rains, not being replaced.Perhaps the biggest problem can be seen in deltas(三角洲), often host to large cities, which are sinking into the oceans. Groundwater is being extracted to feed the city, causing the urban weight to sink and sediments washed away by the ocean are no longer being replaced. The result is that sea level rises in cities from Shanghai to Alexandria.1.What effects does creating a reservoir have on people's life?a. People will see fewer birds near the rivers.b. Farmers below the dam may have less water to irrigate their fields.c. Visitors can't see some cultural relics anymore.d. More conflicts and wars over water will break out.e. All kinds of fish will become extinct in the future.A.b cB.c eC.b eD.a d2.With many dams built across rivers, fish will _______.A.find more places to lay their eggsB.face a more dangerous living habitatC.feed on more sediments rich in nutrientsD.find it easier to deal with the rise of water3.How can dams influence the cities like Shanghai?A.The rainy season will last longerB.Rich soils will be washed awayC.Their entire system will be influencedD.They will lie below sea level in the future4.What does the text mainly talk about?A.Economic gain of damsB.Cultural loss of damsC.Environmental loss of damsD.Environmental benefits of damsCBelgium is divided into three communities. Each one has its own language and traditions. But the people of Belgium are untied in their love for Belgian potato fries. The fries are prepared and sold the same way in all areas of the country. The Reuters news service reports that potatoes reached Belgium in the 16th century. But it was not until the 19th century that restaurants and others began selling fried potatoes throughout the country as a separate meal.Recently, a Belgian group launched a campaign aimed at getting the United Nations (UN) to recognize the popular treat. The group wants the UN's Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to place the food on its cultural heritage(遗产) list. The UNESCO list recognizes more than 300 objects» beliefs and practices. They include Turkish coffee and the traditional Chinese theater known as Peking opera. The list also includes a dance, the Argentinian tango, and the singing of the Aka pygmies of the Central African Republic. UNESCO says the list is "made up of intangible heritage elements(非物质文化遗产元素) that help show the diversity of heritage and raise awareness about its importance".Belgian potato fries are traditionally sold in a paper wrapper, or cone, in a "fritkot" There are about 5,000 fritkots in Belgium. That means they are 10 times more common as a percentage of the population as McDonald's restaurants in the United States. The national organization of fritkot owners say the small, often unfurnished buildings are much like Belgium itself. It says these buildings combine the country's acceptance of disorder with a dislike of structures that all look the same. The group says 95 percent of Belgians visit a fried potato hut at least once a year.1.Belgian potato fries ________.A.were recognized by the UNESCOB.are well received in BelgiumC.are sold in all food storesD.didn't become a separate meal until the 16th century2.What's the aim of the Belgian group?A.To place Belgian potato fries on the cultural heritage list.B.To prevent other countries producing Belgian potato fries.C.To show the diversity of Belgian foods.D.To prove the popularity of Belgian foods.3.Which of the following is NOT listed in the UNESCO list?A.Peking opera.B.The Argentinian tango.C.Turkish coffee.D.American restaurants.4.What does the underlined word "fritkot" in the last paragraph probably refer to?A.A simple house which is used to live in.B.A kind of small, unfurnished building.C.A place where machines are used to make goods.D.A piece of paper, plastic, or thin metal that covers something.DMore than 10 million Chinese cultural relics have been lost overseas, lots of which were stolen and illegally shipped out of China during the times of war before 1949. About 1. 67 million pieces are housed in no more than 200 museums in 47 countries, which accounts for 10 percent of all lost Chinese cultural relics, and the rest are in the hands of private collectors. Most of these treasures are owned by museums or private collectors in the United States, Europe, Japan and Southeast Asian countries. There are more than 23,000 pieces in the British Museum, most of which were stolen or bought for pennies more than 100 years ago. The major method to recover these national treasures was to buy them back. In some cases, private collectors donated the relics to the government. Also the government can turn to official channels to demand the return of relics. In 2003, a priceless bronze pig's head dating from the Qing Dynasty was returned to its home in Beijing after it was removed by the Anglo-French Allied Army over 140 years ago. Macao entrepreneur(企业家) Stanley Ho donated 6 million yuan to buy it back from a US art collector and then donated it to the Poly Art Museum in Beijing.Although buying-back is the most feasible way to recover the lost treasures, limited funding is always a big headache. In recent years, the Chinese government has improved efforts to recover the precious cultural relics lost overseas. It has started a national project on the recovery of the treasures and has set up a database(数据库) collecting relevant information. It has signed several international agreements with many countries on this matter, and is also looking for international cooperation to recover the relics by working closely with several international organizations.1.What is the passage mainly about?A.The ways to recover cultural relics.B.The efforts to recover Chinese cultural relics.C.Stanley Ho donated a bronze pig s head to Beijing.D.Chinese cultural relics were stolen by the Anglo-French Allied Army.2.We can infer from the passage that _______.A.China has enough money to buy all the cultural relics back.B.The Chinese government has done a lot to recover the lost cultural relics.C.Many countries have returned the lost cultural relics to China for free.D.China is preparing to set up a database to collect information about the lost cultural relics.3.Which of the following statements about the bronze pig's head is NOT true?A.It was made in the Qing Dynasty.B.It is now in the Poly Art Museum in Beijing.C.It was donated by the French government to Qiina,D.It was removed by the Anglo-French Allied Army over 140 years ago.4.The underlined word "feasible" in Paragraph 5 can be replaced by "_______".A. possibleB. difficultC. wonderfulD. careful第二节根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
