Many people ask their friends or doctors: how can I lose weight? And many of them are often told: if you exercise, you will lose weight; ﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣which is one of the most widely accepted ideas in our culture. As a doctor, I exercise all the time, but I still have got fat that hangs over my belt when I sit. Why isn't all the exercise getting rid of it?It's another question many of us may ask. More than 35 million Americans now belong to a health club, up from 23 million in 1993. We spend some ﹩19 billion a year on gym memberships. Of course, some people join and never go. Still, as one major study ﹣ the Minnesota Heart Survey ﹣ found, more of us at least say we exercise regularly. And yet obesity figures have risen sharply in the same period: a third of Americans are obese, and another third count as overweight by the Federal Government's definition. Yes, it's entirely possible that those of us who regularly go to the gym would weigh even more if we exercised less. But like many other people, I get hungry after I exercise, so I often eat more on the days I work out than on the days I don't. Could exercise actually be keeping me from losing weight? The popular belief that exercise is essential for weight control is actually fairly new. As recently as the 1960s, doctors routinely advised against too much exercise, particularly for older adults who could injure themselves. Today doctors encourage even their oldest patients to exercise, which is sound advice for many reasons: People who regularly exercise are at significantly lower risk for all manner of diseases ﹣ those of the heart in particular. They less often develop cancer and many other illnesses. But the past few years of obesity research show that the role of exercise in weight loss has been wildly over﹣evaluated."In general, for weight loss, exercise is pretty useless, " says Eric Ravussin, exercise researcher at Louisiana State University. Many recent studies have found that exercise isn't as important in helping people lose weight as you hear so regularly in gym advertisements or on shows like The Biggest Loser ﹣ or from magazines like this one.(1)Which title is the most suitable one for this article?________A Overweight Is Not Good for YouB Exercise Won't Make You ThinC Gym Is Part of American LifestyleD A Health Problem in America.(2)Which statement is correct?________A Some Americans join a health club but never take exercise thereB The number ofoverweight people has doubled since 1993 in US C More than 35 million Americans now go to the gym regularly D Most Americans waste too much money each year on sports.(3)From the passage, we know that exercise________.A has long been believed to be good for older adultsB is not properly advertised as a way to lose weightC was never recognized as an effective way to lose weightD is not useful at all.(4)According to the passage, why do people gain weight?________A Because they have the habit of going to the gym regularlyB Because they eat the same food when they do not exerciseC Because they exercise less than required by doctorsD Because they eat more after they exercise.(5)What can be inferred from the passage?________A Most Americans are overweight.B Very few people in America are overweight.C The author takes exercise all the time so he is very slimnow. D The author takes exercise all the time but it doesn't make him lose weight.23. The tanker lay in the bay for four days, a few hundred meters from the shore. In this tideless water she lay as still and secure as if fastened to a wall. In a way, she was, for the sandy bottom held her in its grip. Twice the harbor master's boat went out to her; the second time it brought off a number of the crew. It never occurred to the watchers on shore that the ship was in danger, she looked so calm and seaworthy. From time to time there was activity on board: when a land wind rose in the evenings, the tanker's engines came to life. Then the vessel shook herself and strained fiercely, but none of it did her any good. She just stayed where she was in the bay.The July sun blazed down on her flat decks. Occasionally a seaman , stripped to the waist, came out on to the deck with the movements of someone performing a complicated dance, stepping lightly, never resting on that burning metal. Once or twice he kept close to the ship's rail, with an arm raised against the sunlight, staring at the people on the beach. Throughout the day the air rose in visible waves from the tanker's decks. When a sea wind blew, it brought with it the heavy smell of oil. At night the ship lay in total darkness. On the fifth morning a thick bank of sea mist filled the bay. It seemed that the tanker had got away in the night and gone into harbor. But this was an illusion. Slowly, as the fog cleared a little, she came into view again but farther out. Soon two figures could be seen at work on her deck. There was the sound of hammering, of metal on metal, and then of something heavy falling on to the deck. At once the watchers on shore were half blinded by a flash of yellow light that enveloped the ship from end to end. The explosion that followed the flash was like a single crack from a giant whip. In a moment the ship, except for a dark line at water level, was lost to sight behind the flames. Two bodies were washed ashore in the bay. They were stripped to the waist, bare﹣footed and black with flash burns. The right arm of one body was raised to the forehead as if shielding the eyes from some bright light. The other man wore a gold chain round his neck. The tanker burned for nine days and nights.(1)What prevented the tanker from sailing into harbor?________A She was waiting for a suitable tide.B Most of her crew had goneashore. C She had run aground on sand. D Her engines had broken down..(2)The people who were watching from the beach________.A realized the trouble but could do nothing about itB offered to help without knowing what to doC did not know there was anything wrong with the shipD did not want to put themselves in any danger.(3)Why did the seaman keep moving about?________A Because the deck was uncomfortable to stand on.B Because that was the best way to keep his balance.C Because he was practicing some kind of dance.D Because he had to pretend he was working..(4)How did the mist affect the situation?________A It forced the ship to move farther from the shore.B It made the seamen's work harder.C It allowed the ship to move into the harbor.D For a time it hid the ship from sight..(5)The explosion occurred on the tanker when________.A she was unloading her oilB the fog began to clearC the two seamen were workingD she was struck by lightning.(6)What happened to the two seamen?________A They were blown off the ship and swam ashore.B They were killed in the explosion.C They survived but were badly burned.D They died shortly after reaching the beach.24. I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful. I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2﹣to 3﹣week﹣old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.I examined the chick and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree. The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down. Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! Thehomeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by the greatest sight of all ﹣ LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.(1)What is unavoidable in the author's rescue work according to paragraph 1?________A Efforts made in vain.B Getting injured in his work.C Feeling uncertain about his future.D Creatures forced out of their homes..(2)What made the chick calm down?________A A new nest.B Some food.C A recording.D Its parents..(3)How would the author feel about the outcome of the event?________A It's unexpected.B It's beautiful.C It's humorous.D It's discouraging.25. You're sitting on the train home and the person opposite you yawns. Suddenly, you're yawning with him, though you're not tired. This phenomenon confused scientists for years until a recent study found that people tend to sympathize with fellow humans. Supporting this claim was the discovery that those children who were unable to form normal emotional ties with others did not experience contagious yawning, which showed that humans communicate regularly without words.Hugo Critchley, a neuroscientist, has conducted an experiment recently, which will prove that happiness and sadness can spread like the common cold. According to Critechley, our mind and body are in constant exchange about how we're feeling. "Emotions are closely linked with states of internal responses, " he explained. "There are also more visible changes in our gestures and facial expression. When we're in a group, these signals can spread to another person. For example, there's the obvious tendency to smile when smiled at and there are less obvious changes that reflect emotions of surprise, anger or sadness such as a change in our heart rate and blood pressure.Hugo Critchley further explained, "Our bodies ________ and when we like the other person, we ever copy his behavior. Next time you chat with a friend, take note of howyou're sitting﹣ it's pretty likely that you will be the same. Scientists believe it's our way of telling each other that we're partners. Through body language, humans give each other very subtle but clear signals that show emotions."So, what lessons can we learn from this? "Spend time with happy people﹣ otherwise your health could suffer, " said Critchley." When we're sad, our body goes into fight or flight mode. But when we're happy, our body works normally and we feel relaxed and positive. So we look bright, our skin glows, we feel healthy and it affects everyone around us."(1)According to Hugo Critchley,________.A emotions are as visible as facial expressionsB we yawn more frequently when we have a coldC emotions are connected with states of internal responsesD the change of blood pressure is not linked with the change of emotions..(2)The underlined word "synchronies" in Paragraph 4 means "________".A move slowlyB change rapidlyC relax temporarilyD respond accordingly.(3)From the passage we can learn________.A sadness is as contagious as happinessB anger is less contagious thanfriendliness C surprise is more contagious than smile D surprise is the most contagious among emotions.26. One morning a few years ago, Harvard President Neil Rudenstine overslept. For this busy man, it was a sort of ________: after years of non﹣stop hard work, he might wear himself out and die an early death.Only after a week's leave﹣﹣ during which he read novels, listened to music and walked with his wife on a beach﹣﹣ was Rudenstine able to return to work.In our modern life, we have lost the rhythm between action and rest. Amazingly, within this world there is a universal but silly saying: "I am so busy."We say this to one another as if our tireless efforts were a talent by nature and an ability to successfully deal with stress. The busier we are, the more important we seem to ourselves and, we imagine, to others. To be unavailable to our friends and family, and to be unableto find time to relax﹣﹣ this has become the model of a successful life.Because we do not rest, we lose our way. We miss the guide telling us where to go, the food providing is with strength, the quiet giving us wisdom. How have we allowed this to happen? I believe it is this: we have forgotten the Sabbath, the day of the week﹣﹣ for followers of some religions﹣﹣ for rest and praying. It is a day when we are not supposed to work, a time when we devote ourselves to enjoying and celebrating what is beautiful. It is a good time to bless our children and loved ones, give thanks, share meals, walk and sleep. It is a time for us to take a rest, to put our work aside, trusting that there are larger forces at work taking care of the world.Rest is s spiritual and biological need; however, in our strong ambition to be successful and care for our many responsibilities, we may feel terribly guilty when we take time to rest. The Sabbath gives us permission to stop work. In fact, "Remember the Sabbath" is more than simply permission to rest; it is a rule to obey and a principle to follow.(1)The "alarm" in the first paragraph refers to "________".A a signal of stressB a warning of dangerC a sign of ageD a spread of disease.(2)According to Paragraph 4, a successful person is one who is believed to________.A be able to work without stressB be more talented than other peopleC be more important than anyone elseD be busying working without time to rest.(3)Some people feel guilty when taking time to rest because they________.A think that taking a rest means lacking ambitionsB fail to realize that rest is an essential part of lifeC fail to realize that religions force them to restD think that taking a rest means being lazy.(4)What is the main idea of this passage?________A We should balance work with rest.B The Sabbath gives us permission torest. C It is silly for anyone to say "I am busy." D We should be available to our family and friends.27. How is communication actually achieved? It depends, of course, either on a common language or on known conventions, or at least on the beginnings of these. If the common language and the conventions exist, the contributor, for example, the creative artist, the performer, or the reporter, tries to use them as well as he can. But often, especially with original artists and thinkers, the problem is in one way that of creating a language, or creating a convention, or at least of developing the language and conventions to the point where they are capable of bearing his precise meaning. In literature, in music, in the visual arts, in the sciences, in social thinking, in philosophy, this kind of development has occurred again and again. It often takes a long time to get through, and for many people it will remain difficult. But we need never think that it is impossible; creative energy is much more powerful than we sometimes suppose. While a man is engaged in this struggle to say new things in new ways, he is usually more than ever concentrated on the actual work, and not on its possible audience. Many artists and scientists share this fundamental unconcern about the ways in which their work will be received. They may be glad if it is understood and appreciated, hurt if it is not, but while the work is being done there can be no argument. The thing has to come out as the man himself sees it.In this sense it is true that it is the duty of society to create conditions in which such men can live. For whatever the value of any individual contribution, the general body of work is of immense value to everyone. But of course things are not so formal, in reality. There is not society on the one hand and these individuals on the other. In ordinary living, and in his work, the contributor shares in the life of his society, which often affects him both in minor ways and in ways sometimes so deep that he is not even aware of them. His ability to make his work public depends on the actual communication system: the language itself, or certain visual or musical or scientific conventions, and the institutions through which the communication will be passed. The effect of these on his actual work can be almost infinitely variable. For it is not only a communication system outside him; it isalso, however original he may be, a communication system which is in fact part of himself. Many contributors make active use of this kind of internal communication system. It is to themselves, in a way, that they first show their conceptions, play their music, present their arguments. Not only as a way of getting these clear, in the process of almost endless testing that active composition involves, but also, whether consciously or not, as a way of putting the experience into a communicable form. If one mind has grasped it, then it may be open to other minds. In this deep sense, the society is in some ways already present in the act of composition. This is always very difficult to understand, but often, when we have the advantage of looking back at a period, we can see, even if we cannot explain, how this was so. We can see how much even highly original individuals had in common, in their actual work, and in what is called their "structure of feeling", with other individual workers of the time, and with the society of that time to which they belonged. The historian is also continually struck by the fact that men of this kind felt isolated at the very time when in reality they were beginning to get through. This can also be noticed in our own time, whensome of the most deeply influential men feel isolated and even rejected. The society andthe communication are there, but it is difficult to recognize them, difficult to be sure.(1)Creative artists and thinkers achieve communication by________.A depending on shared conventionsB fashioning their ownconventions C adjusting their personal feelings D elaborating a common language.(2)A common characteristic of artists and scientists involved in creative work isthat________.A they care about the possible reaction to their workB public response is one of the primary conceitsC they are keenly aware of public interest in their workD they are indifferent toward response to their work.(3)According to the passage, which of the following statements is INCORRECT?________ A Individual contributions combined possess great significance to the public. B Good contributors don't neglect the use of internal communication system. C Everyone except those original people comes under the influence of society.
