Summary for Hills like white elephants
In a train station, an American and a girl sit at a table and wait for the train for Madrid. It was very hot, so they order beer. The girl looks off at the hills and compares them to white elephants, to which the American responds that he has never seen one. Then they order Anis Del Toro, which the girl says like liquorice. The American is unhappy with those comparisons and urges the girl to enjoy the time. The girl thinks she is having fun while expressing her bright comparisons. However, she adds that the hills don’t really like white elephants.
Later they talk about the drinks for a while, but the American suddenly brings in the topic of an operation. He tries to make the girl, Jig, to believe that the operation is simple. At first, the girl says nothing, so the man continues to downplay the operation. Then the girl asks what will happen after she has had the operation. The man answers that they will be fine afterwards, because he thinks that the operation is the only thing that bothers them. He also says he has known a lot of people who have had the operation and found happiness afterward. The girl dispassionately agrees with him.
Then the man claims that he will not force the girl to do the operation if she doesn’t want to. The girl, however, says she will do it because she doesn’t care herself. She walks to the end of the station, looking at the mountains and clouds. Then, they argue for whether they really could be happy if she has the operation. The girl is tried for the argument and asks the man to stop talking, but the man emphasizes again that he doesn’t want the girl to have operation if she doesn’t like it. So the girl warns the man that she will scream.
The Spanish bartender brings two more beers and tells them that the train is coming in
five minutes. The girl smiles at her to thank her, while the man carries their baggage to the other tracks. In his way of return, the man has a drink alone and watches other people in the bar. The girl smiles at the man when he returns. He asks the girl whether she feels better. She says she is fine and that there is nothing wrong with her.。
