Unit 5 Canada-“The True North ”阅读理解·组块专练——练速度(限时:35分钟)Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2016·河北五校联盟质检二)As a substitute teacher, my daily routine involves driving to a new school almost every day so I’m usually unable to anticipate (预料) the day’s events, good or bad!On one particular day, I was teaching in a very difficult class. I was managing behavior all the morning and by lunch time, I knew I needed coffee to even consider surviving the afternoon. So on my lunch break, I drove to a nearby plaza to get a cup of coffee. Upon returning to the car I realized I had locked my keys and my phone inside! I had about 15 minutes to get back to the school which was a good 4 or 5minute drive away. I contemplated (考虑) rushing back, but it being winter, I thought a nasty fall on ice would only make the situation much worse. So I ran into a McDonald’s which was in the same plaza and asked the man at the counter who happened to be the manager to please call me a cab. I briefly explained my situation to him, and I could tell by the look in his eyes that he empathized. He hurried to the back to use the phone while I paced in the restaurant. I had less than 10 minutes to get back to my school at this point. The manager returned only to tell me that the cab company had put him on hold and then the line got disconnected, and that he was now on hold again, but had not been able to request the cab yet. My expression, I assume, began to resemble some combination of hopelessness and fear.Without a thought, he grabbed his coat and offered to drive me to the school. Without hesitation, I followed him into his car and made it back into my classroom with 2 minutes to spare before the bell!Upon arriving at the school, I thanked this man endlessly. His calm behavior and kind nature made me think he was probably a wonderful manager to work for, and also a wonderful human being to have on this earth. This experience makes me realize that out of every seemingly hopeless situation, there is the opportunity for acts of kindness to transpire (发生), which can have an unimaginable impact (影响) on those who receive them.语篇解读:本文是一篇记叙文。

Unit 5 Canada-“The True North”李仕才【阅读理解插花】Science textbooks around the world have become suddenly out of date. Four new chemical elements(元素)have been added to the periodic table. A big decision now lies ahead—elements 113, 115, 117 and 118 need to be given their official names and symbols.New elements can be named after a mythical(神话的) concept, a mineral, a place or country, a property(特性) or a scientist. The names have to be unique and maintain “historical and chemical consistency”. This means a lot of “-iums”.“They’re Latinising the name, ” explains chemist Andrea Sella. “The most recent tradition is to name them after places or people. ” The places chosen tend to be where the element was discovered or first produced. No one has yet named an element after themselves but many elements are named in honour of important scientists. Albert Einstein was given einsteinium. This can also be a way of righting the wrongs of the past. “Lise Meitner was really the chemist who spotted nuclear fission(核裂变)but she was never really recognised for it because she was Jewish and a woman, ” says Sella. “Giving an element a name that reminds us of her is greatly important. ”The naming process isn’t quick. The scientists who discovered them will start things off by suggesting a name. But it will be down to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) to approve it. A special division of the US-based group has to accept the suggestion. Then there is a public review period of five months before the IUPAC ge ts the final approval. Once it’s ready, the name is announced in the scientific journal Pure and Applied Chemistry.Naming an element is not just about functionality. Names are always important.

A6.With a lot of difficult problems________,the manager felt like a cat on hot bricks.A.settling B.to settleC.being settled D.settled解析句意:因为有许多难题要解决,经理感觉像热锅上的蚂蚁。
“with+宾语+to do”结构作状语表将来,实际上此题中的with结构就相当于with a lot of difficult problems for him to settle,所以尽管settle和problems之间是被动关系,仍用主动形式。
答案 B7.________by all his grandchildren, the old man was delighted.A.Surrounded B.SurroundingC.To be surrounded D.To be surrounding解析surround与the old man之间为逻辑上的动宾关系的,所以此题应用surround 的过去分词作状语。

答案 CⅡ.阅读理解Commuters (上下班往返的人) who drive to work will face a parking charge of up to £350 a year.Ministers are backing a workplace parking charge which will come into force in Nottingham in 2013 and is likely to be adopted across the country. The scheme will see firms with more than ten parking places for staff charged £350 a year for each space in two years.Employers would be free to pass on the charge to their staff—meaning it would effectively be a tax on driving to work. The scheme aims to reduce traffic by preventing unnecessary car journeys and raise funds to improve public transport, but critics say it is just an excuse for councils to fill their coffers (金库).Some ten million Britons drive to work each day,and the British Chambers of Commerce says the new charge could total £3.4 billion a year if rolled out nationwide.Already some firms in Nottingham have threatened to leave the city, where 40,000 commuters use their cars to get to work.A spokesman said the scheme was nothing more than a tax on jobs.“It is very unfair to discriminate against those employers who have parking spaces, which get vehicles off the streets,” he said.“And these charges apply around the clock, which is especially unfair on shift workers who rely on their cars because public transport is not available. This is more about increasing the government’s income than reducing traffic.”However,Transport Minister Sadiq Khan gave the plan an official approval during a visit to Nottingham. The council says the tax will raise as much as £100 million over ten years—one fifth of the cost of a new transport system for the city.Another transport spokesman Theresa Villiers said the tax would have a devastating impact on businesses struggling to cope with the economic decline. But Richard Hebditch of the Campaign for Better Transport said the tax would raise money to invest in better transport.“We put forward the idea of workplaceparking taxes as a fairer way to raise money to invest in the future local transport services. We are pleased that the people of Nottingham will be the first to benefit.”【语篇解读】本文主要讲述了Nottingham将出台政策对工作场所停车收费及由此引发的激烈讨论。
