I don't know how many people would have done that; they would have listened to their agents or the studio powers. The friendship that grew out of the experience of making that film and The Sting four years later had its root in the fact that although there was an age difference, we both came from a tradition of theater and live TV. We were respectful of craft (技艺) and focused on digging into the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of American actors: humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other—but always with an underlying affection. Those were also at the core (核心) of our relationship off the screen. We shared the belief that if you're fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back—he with his Newman's Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill, and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival. Paul and I didn't see each other all that regularly, but sharing that brought us together. We supported each other financially and by showing up at events.I last saw him a few months ago. He'd been in and out of the hospital. He and I both knew what the deal was, and we didn't talk about it. Ours was a relationship that didn't need a lot of words.44.Why was the studio unwilling to give the role to the author at first?A. Paul Newman wanted it.B. The studio powers didn't like his agent.C. He wasn't famous enough.D. The director recommended someone else.45.Why did Paul and the author have a lasting friendship?A. They were of the same age.B. They worked in the same theater.C. They were both good actors.D. They had similar characteristics.46.What does the underlined word "that" in paragraph 3 refer to?A. Their belief.B. Their care for children.C. Their success.D. Their support for each other.47.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?A. To show his love of films.B. To remember a friend.C. To introduce a new movie.D. To share his acting experience.CCities usually have a good reason for being where they are, like a nearby port or river. People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. New York City, for example, is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River. Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 800 people to 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time. Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In 1896, Dawson, Canada, was unmapped wilderness (荒野). But gold was discovered there in 1897, and two years later, it was one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000.Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris. People went there for gold. They travelled over snow-covered mountains and sailed hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet snow that could fall without warming. An avalanche (雪崩) once closed the path, killing 63 people. For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip. Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives. But no matter how rich they were, Dawson was never comfortable. Necessities like food and wood were very expensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come. Today, people still come and go—to see where the Canadian gold rush happened. Tourism is now the chief industry of Dawson City—its present population is 762.48.What attracted the early settlers to New York City?A. Its business culture.B. Its small population.C. Its geographical position.D. Its favourable climate.49.What do we know about those who first dug for gold in Dawson?A. Two-thirds of them stayed there.B. One out of five people got rich.C. Almost everyone gave up.D. Half of them died.50.What was the main reason for many people to leave Dawson?A. They found the city too crowded.B. They wanted to try their luck elsewhere.C. They were unable to stand the winter.D. They were short of food.51.What is the text mainly about?A. The rise and fall of a city.B. The gold rush in Canada.C. Journeys into the wilderness.D. Tourism in Dawson.DTo err is human. Society is suffering from an inability to acknowledge as much. For individuals, errors are painful. The trick, then, is to err well: to recognize mistakes and learn from them. Worryingly, humanity may be getting worse at admitting its mistakes.Few enjoy the feeling of being caught out in an error. But real trouble starts when the desire to avoid a punishment leads to a refusal to deal with contrary evidence. Economists often assume that people are sensible. When faced with a new fact, these people should update their view of the world to take better decisions in future. Yet years of economic research confirms that people frequently disregard information that conflicts with their view of the world. Why should that be? Last year Roland Benabou, of Princeton, presented a framework for thinking about the problem. In many ways, beliefs are like other economic goods. People spend time and resources building them, and get value from them: some beliefs make owners feel good and show their public identity;other beliefs provide value by shaping behavior-for example, religious asceticism(禁欲主义) can help one avoid unhealthy habits.Because beliefs, however, are not simply tools for making good decisions, but are treasured in their own right, new information that challenges them is unwelcome. People often engage in "motivated reasoning" to manage such challenges. Mr Benabou classifies this into three categories. "Strategic ignorance" is when a believer avoids information offering conflicting evidence. In "reality denial", troubling evidence is rationalized(合理化):real estate investors might make up fanciful theories for why prices should behave unusually, and supporters of a disgraced politician might claim the negative news to be fake. And lastly, in "selfsignalling", the believer createshis own tools to interpret the facts in the way he wants: an unhealthy person, for example, might decide that going for a daily run proves he is well."Motivated reasoning" is a cognitive bias(偏见). Not all the errors it leads to are costly: praising the performance of one's supported football team despite contradictory evidence does little harm. But when biases are broadly shared-within financial world or political parties-danger arises. Motivated reasoning helps explain why viewpoints polarize (两极分化) even as information is more easily available than ever before.Work by Mr Benabou suggests that groupthink is highest when people within groups face a shared fate: when choosing to break from a group is unlikely to spare an individual the costs of the group's errors or bring much individual benefit. The incentive(动力) to engage in motivated reasoning is high as a result. Even as the fact on a particular issue is obvious, parties can still become increasingly polarized. That, in turn, can make it harder still for a member of one party to get any benefit from breaking from a group. Indeed, the group has an incentive to silence independent voices.Public statements of regret are risky in a rigidly polarized world. Admissions of error can not only annoy partners but also provide opportunities for opponents. But it is rarely in the interest of those in the right to pretend that they are never wrong.52.According to the passage, beliefs are similar to economic goods in that______ .A. both are entertaining and valuableB. both can be shaped by religious faithC. both can reflect who the owners areD. both promote religious development53.Which of the following is an example of "selfsignalling"? ______A. A fan speaks highly of his team although it has just lost the game.B. A man covers his ears when stealing a bell, believing the bell won'tring.C. Supporters of Trump believe the news about his affairs with a lady isfake.D. Suspected AIDS carriers refuse to be tested though it can be done forfree.54.What can be inferred from Paragraphs 6 and 7? ______A. Polarization causes individuals to break from the group.B. Richer sources of information decrease motivated reasoning.C. Individuals with independent voices are dismissed from the group.D. Individuals in a group engage in motivated reasoning for their owninterests.55.Which of the following opinions might the author agree with? ______A. Denying errors is unavoidable.B. Failure to admit errors is harmful.C. Humans are getting better at erring well.D. Wise people ignore contrary worldviews.五、任务型阅读The Hidden Meaning of Kids' Scribbles (胡乱画) A parent might place his daughter's tadpole (蝌蚪) drawing on the fridge out of a love for his child rather than for the funky-looking image, but for many people, that tadpole art is actually quite charming. In fact, adult abstract artists were often inspired by children's drawing. Observers have found similar patterns in modem abstract art and kids' drawing.Acknowledging that young kids aren't as eager to produce a realistic rendering (呈现)helps demonstrate what the drawing experience means to them. For many kids, drawing is enjoyable not because of the final product it leads to, but because they can live completely in the world of their drawing for a few minutes. Adults may find it hard to relate to this sort of full-body,short experience. But the opportunities for self-expression that drawing provides have important, even therapeutic, value for kids.Maureen Ingram, who's a preschool teacher, said her students often tell different stories about a given piece of art depending on the day, perhaps because they weren't sure what they intended to draw when they started the picture. "We as adults will often say,‘ I'm going to draw a horse,' and we set out…and get frustrated when we can't do it," Ingram said. "They seem to take a much more sensible approach, where they just draw, and then they realize,"it is a horse."Ultimately, what may be most revealing about kids, art isn't the art itself but what they say during the drawing process. Studies suggest that kids will create an elaborate narrative (具体的故事)while drawing, but when telling adults about their work they'll simply name the items or characters in the image. And what about those odd or scary-looking drawings? Does that mean kids are telling themselves stories that are odd or scary? It's hard to say,but it's rarely a good idea to over-interpret it. Ellen Winner, a psychologyprofessor at Boston College, pointed to parents who worry when their kid draws a child the same size as the adults, wondering whether she's suffering from, say, a feeling of impotence -a desire to feel as powerful as older people. But the likely reason is that the child hasn't yet learned how to differentiate size;the easiest solution is to just make all the figures the same size. What's most important to remember is that "children's art has its own logic," Winner said. "Children are not being crazy."六、书面表达请阅读下面文字及图片,并根据要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

He planned to sail home from Hawaii to California. He didn't follow the usual route to the south, and then east, but sailed directly east 一 a slower route with weak winds and few visitors. So Moore was sailing into almost unknown waters. To his shock, Moore found a "soup" of plastic garbage under the ocean's surface. Everyday plastic garbage, such as shopping bags and water bottles, were trapped among the tiny pieces. The sea of garbage reached out as far as Moore could see.Oceanographers(海洋学家)are not surprised that garbage collects in the North Pacific. A pattern of winds and currents, called the North Pacific Gyre, gathers this garbage. Water in the gyre goes round and round in a clockwise pattern (顺时针方向),and anything that gets into the middle of it is trapped. Some oceanographers have questions to Moore. Why didn't satellite pictures show the area? Where did all this plastic come from? Is it really a problem?Moore learned some answers during return trips to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Satellites don't see the plastic because most of it is hidden under the ocean's surface. Some of the plastic comes from ships, but most of it is washed into the ocean from cities beside the Pacific. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a real problem because the plastic in it is harmful to animals. Once fish and birds eat the plastic, poisonous chemicals will get into their bodies and make them sick or even kill them.(1)When did Charles Moore find the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?A. On his way home.B. During one of his races.C. While doing an oceanic survey.D. After coming across bad weather.(2)The plastic garbage is gathered in the North Pacific by .A. sea animals.B. business ships.C. oceanographers.D. great winds and currents.(3)What can be a question some oceanographers ask about Moore's report?A.Why didn't Moore report earlier?B.What harm can the garbage do?C. What use can be made of the garbage?D. Why is the garbage under the water?(4)What might be the best title of the text?A. An ocean of plastic.B.A great discovery.C. The sources of ocean pollution.D. The mysteries of the ocean system.12.(6分)Wild animals are known to listen to each other for warnings of danger. Some birds, for example, run away when neighbors make a loud noise to announce a snake's appearance. The fairy wren, a small Australian songbird, doesn't know the "languages"of other birds when it is born. But a recent research says it can learn the meaning of a few important sounds.Andrew Radford, a biologist at the University of Bristol in England, carried out the study in the country's National Botanic Gardens. He and the researchers tied specially﹣designed, sound﹣producing equipment to their bodies. They wanted to see if fairy wrens could do anything at the sounds of other birds even if they could not see them. The scientists first played two sounds that the birds had never heardbefore. One was a warning cry of a thornbill, a bird not from Australia. The other was a computer﹣produced bird sound called "buzz".When the 16 fairy wrens in the study first heard the sounds, they behaved as usual. The scientist then tried to train half the birds to recognize the thornbill's cry as a warning sound. They tried to train the other half of the birds to recognize the computer﹣produced "buzz" as a warning call. They did so by playing the sounds as well as other noises that the birds already knew as warnings. These included the fairy wrens' own warning call. After three days, the scientists tested what the birds had learned. The fairy wrens trained with the thornbill's cry, flew away when they heard it. The group trained with the "buzz", flew away when they heard that sound. But neither group felt frightened at the sound taught to the other group. The study shows that some birds can learn "languages" by listening.(1)What is the passage mainly about?A. How birds learn a new language.B.The finding of a new research.C.Birds learn each other's languages by listening.D. Fairy wren ﹣ a clever songbird in Australia.(2)Why did Andrew Radford and other researchers tie special equipment to fairy wrens?A.To observe how they live together.B.To record their neighbors' loud noise.C.To teach them the warning signals of other birds.D.To see what they would do at sounds of other birds.(3)What can we learn from paragraph 6?A.Thornbill's cry is easier to learn than "buzz".B.Birds can be trained to learn a warning sound.C.Fairy wrens can tell the sounds of thornbill from "buzz".D.Birds trained with the thornbill's cry may fly away at "buzz".13.(6分)We all know that feeling ashamed of being overweight is more likely to make an overweight problem worse. For some people who find it hard to control their eating, they tend to find fault with themselves. But a new approach, called compassion﹣focused therapy(怜悯聚集疗法)or CFT, is to give some problem eaters more control over their eating. It teaches such people to be kinder to themselves and is appropriate for problems with body figure and eating, says psychologist Melanie Greenfeld."Overeaters are very hard on themselves, so I try to help them develop a more friendly relationship with themselves instead. It starts with getting them to listen to how they talk to themselves. The second step is to practice changing their language into comforting.‘Ok, you ate a chocolate cake ﹣ it's not the end of the world,'" she says. You might think this gives the green light to eating more, but Greenfeld says it has a different effect. "Studies have found that, with practice, it stops the feelings of shame that make someone feel so bad, and they may turn to food to make themselves feel better," she says."It's a different approach. I work with people who are overweight and they're often faced with health experts who wave a finger at them and tell them to stop eating so much, which actually doesn't address the problem. Compassion﹣focused therapy accepts what we're feeling as well as the reasons why we feel so, and encourages us to face our suffering with kindness and understanding.""What do you normally do when a close friend is upset?" Most of us would listen and show that we care because we know it can help them tolerate whatever troubles them. But when we're the ones struggling with disappointment or failure,we fail to act this way to ourselves," says Bloomfield.(1)Why does the author say "OK, you ate …the world"?A. To encourage healthy eating.B. To provide an example of how CFT works.C.To explain a love﹣hate relationship.D. To talk about the importance of the language.(2)What does Greenfeld think of health experts' approach?A. Traditional.B. Effective.C. Ineffective.D. When campus violence happens, the absence of severe punishments usually makes matters worse, leading to those bad guys being more offensive and aggressive. In addition, when faced with such violence, teen victims are too afraid to report it to parents or the school, let alone call the police. In a bid to wrestle with the serious problem, joint forces must be involved. Schools should impose severe punishments upon those offenders, even including removing them from school. Under extreme circumstances, sentencing them to prison is a necessity. As for the individuals of victims, they should be encouraged and guided to face the violence bravely and learn to protect themselves.英语听力试题原文Text 1W: Simon, could you return the tools I lent you for building the bookshelf last month? I never thought that I would like living in a big city, but I was wrong. After ten years of living in one, I can’t imagine ever living in a small town again. Surely small towns and big cities both have some problems in terms of transport. In a small town, you have to own a car to make life comfortable. You can’t get around without one because there isn’t any kind of public transport. Big cities generally have heavy traffic and expensive parking, but there you have a choice of taking public transport, which is cheaper than driving. So, if you don’t have a car, you’d better live in the city.I also love the exciting life in big cities. I can always enjoy a lot of films, concerts, and other wonderful shows. However, these things are not common in small towns. The final thing I like about large cities is that you can meet different kinds of people. I think that living in an area where everyone was just like me would quickly become dull. Of course, safety should be considered, and that’s one area where small towns are better than big cities. Still, I would rather be a bit more careful and live in a large city than to feel safe but dull.。
