Insulation and thermal building materials are used in cool climates to reduce heat loss, whereas insulation and reflective materials are used to keep the heat out in warm climates.

The chart below shows the amount spent on six consumer goods in for European countries.Write a report for a university lecture describing the information shown below. The chart shows that Britain, among the four European countries listed, has spent most heavily on the range of consumer goods included. In every case, British spending is considerably higher than that of other countries; only in the case of tennis racquets does another country, Italy, come close. In contrast, Germany is generally the lowest spender. This is most evident in photographic film, where Germany spends much less than Britain. Germany only spends more than another country, France, in two cases: tennis racquets and perfumes.Meanwhile, France and Italy generally maintain middle positions, averaging approximately similar spending overall. Specifically, France spends more on CDs and photographic film but less on tennis racquets than Italy does. Italy’s spending on personal stereos is only marginally greater than that of France, while spending on toys is equal between the two.It is clear from the data given that there are some significant differences in spending habits within Europe. The chart below shows the amount spent on six consumer goods in four European countries.•一般题目都会将图形的X1, X2, Y轴的几个变量表示出来,如此处X1轴six consumer goods; X2轴European countries; Y轴the amount第一段The chart shows that Britain, among the four European countries listed, has spent most heavily on the range of consumer goods included.•点明了英国消费冠军的地位•the range of consumer goods 其中的the range of 表示“一系列的”,由于雅思小作文经常出现多个物品或人群的比较,所以这个表达很有用•the four countries listed; consumer goods included其中的listed, included为过去分词作后置定语,但是这两个词是充数的,没有也无妨,不过这两个词雅思图表经常用到In every case, British spending is considerably higher than that of other countries; only in the case of tennis racquets does another country, Italy, come close.•具体到6种消费品,只是这个地方的描述和图形不太精确,仔细看看,应当是stereos 和法国与德国齐平,tennis racquets越高于意大利,当然用come close 是正确的。

Demystifying the IELTS Writing Task 1: A Comprehensive Guide to Chart Types The IELTS Writing Task 1, a seemingly straightforward assessment, often becomes a stumbling block for many test-takers. It demands not only a keen eye for detail and accurate data interpretation but also the ability to weave those observations into a coherent and engaging narrative. Understanding the various chart types and their nuances is the first step towards conquering this challenge. Let's embark on a journey to unravel the mysteries of these visual representations and equip you with the skills to tackle them head-on. One of the most common chart types you'll encounter is the line graph. Think of it as a storyteller, tracing the journey of data points over time. (simile) It's perfect for showcasing trends, fluctuations, and patterns, revealing the ebb and flow of data like the rise and fall of tides. (metaphor) For instance, a line graph might illustrate the fluctuating unemployment rate in a country over a decade, highlighting periods of economic boom and bust. Analyzing such a graph involves identifying key trends, significant turning points, and comparing different data sets if multiple lines are present. Remember, the devil is in the details, so pay close attention to the scales and units of measurement. Next, we have the bar chart, a master of comparison. It presents data in distinct categories, making it easy to spot the winners and losers at a glance. (idiom) Imagine comparing the populations of different cities or the sales figures of various products – bar charts excel at highlighting such disparities. When describing a bar chart, focus on the most significant differences, use comparative language like "higher than" or "twice as much as," and don't forget to mention the overall trend, if any. Pie charts are the visual equivalent of slicing a cake, dividing a whole into its constituent parts. (metaphor) They are ideal for illustrating proportions and percentages, like the breakdown of a company's expenditure or the distribution of age groups within a population. When tackling a pie chart, ensure you accurately represent the proportions using appropriate language like "the majority," "a small fraction," or "roughly equal." Tables may seem less intimidating, but they demand a meticulous approach. Packed with numbers and categories, they require careful analysis to identify key information and trends. It's like panning for gold – you need tosift through the data to find the nuggets of insight. (metaphor) Focus on the most significant figures, highlight any comparisons or contrasts, and avoid simply regurgitating the data. Finally, process diagrams showcase the flow of a process or system, like the steps involved in manufacturing a product or the life cycle of a butterfly. Describing these diagrams requires clear and concise language, focusing on the sequence of steps and the connections between them. Think of it as narrating a journey, guiding the reader through each stage of the process. (metaphor) Remember, regardless of the chart type, your task is to tell a story with the data. Paint a picture with words, highlighting the key insights and trends, and avoid getting lost in the minutiae. (idiom) Practice analyzing different charts, build your vocabulary, and soon you'll be deciphering data like a seasoned pro, turning the IELTS Writing Task 1 from a hurdle into a stepping stone to success.。

The smallest underground railway system, T okyo, serves the smallest number of passengers per year as predicted. In conclusion, the underground railway systems in different cities vary a lot in the size of the system, the number of passengers served per year and in the age of the system.TEST FOUR WRITING TASK ONEYou should spend about 20 minutes in this task. The map below is of the town of Garlsdon. A new supermarket(S) is planned for the town. The map shows two possible sites for the supermarket. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.Write at least 150 words.地图The map shows two proposed locations for a new supermarket for the town of Garlsdon. The first potential location (S1) is outside the town itself, and is sited just off the main road to the town of Hindon, lying 12 kms to the north-west. This site is in the countryside and so would be able to accommodate a lot of car parking. This would make it accessible to shoppers from both Hindon and Garlsdon who could travel by car. As it is also close to the railway line linking the two towns to Cransdon(25km to the south-east), a potentially large number of shoppers would also be able to travel by train. In contrast, the suggested location, S2, is right in the town centre, which would be good for local residents. Theoretically the store could be accessed by road or rail from the surrounding towns, including Bransdon, but as the central area is a no-traffic zone, cars would be unable to park and access would be difficult.Overall, neither site is appropriate for all the towns, but for customers in Cransdon, Hindon and Garlsdon, the out-of-town site(S1) would probably offer more advantages.剑六TEST ONE WARITING TASK ONEYou should spend about 20 minutes in this task. The graph and table below give information about water use worldwide and water consumption in two different countries.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.Write at least 150 words. The graph shows how the amount of water used worldwide changed between 1900 and 2000.Throughout the century, the largest quantity of water was used for agricultural purposes, and this increased dramatically from about 500km to around 3000 km in the year 2000.Water used in the industrial and domestic sectors also increased, but consumption was minimal until mid-century. From 1950 onwards, industrial use grew steadily to just over 1000km, while domestic use rose more slowly to only 300km, both far below the levels of consumption by agriculture. The table illustrates the differences in agricultural consumption in some areas of the world by contrasting the amount of irrigated land in Brazil(26500km) with that in the D.R.C (100km). This means that a huge amount of water is used in agriculture in Brazil, and this is reflected in the figures for water consumption per person: 359m compared with only 8m in the Congo. With a population of 176 million, the figures for Brazil indicate how high agricultural water consumption can be in some countries.TEST TWO WARITING TASK ONEYou should spend about 20 minutes in this task. The table below gives information about changes in modes of travel in England between 1985 and 2000.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.Write at least 150 words.TEST THREE WARITING TASK ONEYou should spend about 20 minutes in this task. The diagrams below show the lift cycle of the silkworm and stages in the production of silk cloth.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.Write at least 150 words.流程The first diagram shows that there are four main stages in the life of the silkworm. First ofall, eggs are produced by the moth and it takes ten days for each egg to become a silkworm larva that feeds on mulberry leaves. This stage lasts for up to six weeks until the larva produces a cocoon of silk thread around itself. After a period of about three weeks, the adult moths eventually emerge from these cocoons and the life cycle begins again. The cocoons are the raw material used for the production of silk cloth. Once selected. they are boiled in water and the threads can be separated in the unwinding stage. Each thread is between 300 and 900 metres long, which means they can be twisted together, dyed and then used to produce cloth in the weaving stage.Overall, the diagrams show that the cocoon stage of the silkworm can be used to produce silk cloth through a very simple process.TEST FOUR WARITING TASK ONEYou should spend about 20 minutes in this task. The charts below give information about USA marriage and divorce rates between 1970 and 2000, and the marital status of adult Americans in two of the years.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.Write at least 150 words. We are given two charts which show us a few sets of data about the marital status of the Americans between 1970 and 2000.The first chart compares the number of marriages and divorces in the United States of America between 1970 and 2000. We can see that data is given for each decade; the number of people who are getting married decreased slightly since 1980, as well as the divorces one. Nevertheless, divorces increased between 1970 and 1980.The second chart is more precise about the different martial status of the Americans between the 1970 and 2000. The number of divorced people has risen more than the double during this two years, and the data for the never married people has also increased significantly. However , less and less people are married,as the first chart showed us; the widowed American number is also decreasing. As a conclusion, we can say that the marital status background of the Americans has maybe known the greatest change it had ever seen.剑七TEST ONE WARITING TASK ONEYou should spend about 20 minutes in this task. The table below gives information on consumer spending one different items in five different countries in 2002.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.Write at least 150 words.TEST TWO WARITING TASK ONEYou should spend about 20 minutes in this task. The graph below shows the consumption of fish and some different kinds of meat in a Eurpoean country between 1979 and 2004.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.Write at least 150 words.折线The graph illustrates changed in the amounts of beef, lamb, chicken and fish consumed in a particular European country between 1979 and 2004.In 1979 beef was by far the most popular of these foods, with about 225 grams consumed per person per week. Lamb and chicken were eaten in similar quantities (around 150 grams), while much less fish was consumed (just over 50 grams). However, during this 25-year period the consumption of beef and lamb fell dramatically to approximately 100 grams and 55 grams respectively. The consumption of fish also declined, but much less significantly to just below 50 grams, so although it remained the least popular food, consumption levels were the most stable. The consumption of chicken, on the other hand, showed an upward trend, overtaking that of lamb in 1980 and that of beef in 1989. By 2004 it had soared to almost 250 grams per person per week.Overall, the graph shows how the consumption of chicken increased dramatically while the popularity of these other foods decreased over the period.TEST THREE WARITING TASK ONEYou should spend about 20 minutes in this task. The chart below shows information about changes in average house prices in five different cities between 1990 and 2002 compared with the average house prices in 1989.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.Write at least 150 words.TEST FOUR WARITING TASK ONEYou should spend about 20 minutes in this task. The pie charts below show units of electricity production by fuel source in Australia and France in 1980 and 2000.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words. The chart compare the sources of electricity in Australia and France in the years 1980 and 2000. Between these years electricity production almost doubled, rising from 100 units to 170 in Australia, and from 90 to 180 units in France. In 1980 Australia used coal as the main electricity source (50 units) and the remainder was produced from natural gas, hydro power (each producing 20 units) and oil (which produced only 10 units). By 2000, coal had become the fuel for more than 75% of electricity produced and only hydro continued to be another significant source supplying approximately 20%.In contrast, France used coal as a source for only 25 units of electricity in 1980, which was matched by natural gas. The remaining 40 units were produced largely from oil and nuclear power, with hydro contributing only 5 units. But by 2000 nuclear power, which was not used at all in Australia, had developed into the main source, producing almost 75% of electricity, at 126 units, while coal and oil together produced only 50 units. Other sources were no longer significant.Overall, it is clear that by 2000 these two countries relied on different principal fuel sources: Australia relied on coal and France on nuclear power.剑八TEST ONE WARITING TASK ONEYou should spend about 20 minutes in this task. The pie chart below shows the main reasons why agricultural land becomes less productive. The table shows how these causes affected three regions of the world during the 1990s.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words. The pie chart shows how farmland is degraded globally. According to the chart, overgrazing was the leading cause of land degradation worldwide, accounting for 35%. This is followed by deforestation, at 30%. Another important reason why land becomes less productive is over-cultivation, which is responsible for 28% of the total degraded land. The remainder (7%) is caused by other reasons. The table compares the percentage of land degraded and the various reasons for degradation in three regions, namely North America, Europe and Oceania, during the 1990s. Of the three regions, Europe was the most seriously affected, with 23% of its agricultural land being degraded. This figure was higher than the percentages for North America and Oceania combined. In Europe, land clearance accounted for 9.8% of total degradation, whereas this only affected 0.2% of land in North America and 1.7% in Oceania. Europe also suffered from over-cultivation and overgrazing, at 7.7% and 5.5%, respectively. In contrast, Oceania has 13% of degraded land, and this was mainly caused by over-grazing (11.3%). The least affected region was North America, where only 5% of land was degraded, mainly due to over-cultivation (3.3%) and overgrazing (1.5%).In summary, overgrazing is the most serious threat to farmland worldwide and Europe was the biggest victim of land degradation in the 1990s.TEST TWO WARITING TASK ONEYou should spend about 20 minutes in this task. The three pie charts below show the changes in annual spending by a particular UK school in 1981, 1991 and 2001.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. The period had also seen a significant increase in spending on furniture and equipment, from 15% to 23%, despite a fall in 1991. Insurance, which only accounted for 2% in 1981, rose fourfold to reach 8% by 2001.On the other hand, other workers’ pay fell from 28% to 15% of total spending in the same time frame. Although there was an increase in expenditure on resources such as books, which grew from 15% to 20% between 1981 and 1991, this figure dropped steeply to 9% by 2001.Overall, during the period shown, there were increases in spending for staff salaries, equipment and insurance, but mostly at the expense of resources and other workers’ salaries.TEST THREE WARITING TASK ONEYou should spend about 20 minutes in this task. The diagrams below show the stages and equipment used in the cement-making process.
While it’s true that graphs andcharts are the most common types of question, I think it would be very unwise not to prepare for diagrams and maps too. What happens if you get one of these questions in your test and you haven’t prepared for it?
1. Introduction: what does the chart show?2. Overview / summary: what are the most noticeable features?3. Specific details: try to write 2 paragraphs.
