Unit 3Under the sea【美文阅读】广袤无垠的海洋,孕育了无数生命传奇,以其独有的神秘吸引着人类对其进行不懈的探索。
为此,海洋科学家通常把海洋分为五个区域。
现在就让我们一起了解一下吧!The earth's oceans can reach depths of up to 11,000 metres. That is deep enough to cover Mt.Qomolangma! The oceans are incredibly(不可思议的)large and contain several different habitats. To make it easier to describe the various parts of the oceans, marine(海上的)scientists usually divide the oceans into five zones. Each zone is different mainly as a result of how much sunlight reaches it.Most of the life in the ocean can be found in the first zone, which begins at the surface and goes down about 200 metres.Because there is sunlight at this level, plants are able to grow.Marine animals such as dolphins, sharks, sea turtles and sea lions, and of course a variety of fish, live in the sunlit(阳光普照的)part of the ocean. It is difficult to hide from other animals in this area. The second zone starts at 200 metres and goes down to about 1,000 metres. Some sunlight can reach this level, but it is not enough for plants to grow.Because this zone is relatively dark, many of the creatures that live here are able to make light with their body. The light from these animals makes the water look like a sky with moving stars in it.The third zone of the ocean is dark. This place, about 3,000 metres deep, may not seem a likely habitat, but there are more creatures here than one might think. Most of the animals that live here are black or red because of the lack of light.Below 4,000 metres, the temperature is near freezing and there is no light at all.In fact, the zone is so dark and empty that scientists named this zone after the Greek word for “no bottom”.There is not much life to be found in this cold and unpleasant part of the ocean, but some small creatures still manage to survive here despite the high water pressure. The very deepest part of the ocean is found 2,000 metres further down.At this depth, the water pressure is extremely high and life is very difficult for the few creatures that live pared to the other zones, this one has very little life.Since there is no light here, some of the animals do not have eyes.Next time you look at the ocean from the beach or on a map, remember that what you are seeing is only the surface-only the beginning of the large and varied adventure.【诱思导学】1.Why do these animals living in the second zone make the water look like a sky with moving stars in it?________________________________________________________________________ 2.Do you think it is possible for some creatures that live in the very deepest part of the oceanto see each other?________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 1.Because many of them are able to make light with their body. 2.No.Because there is no light here and some of the animals have no eyes.Period ⅠPreviewing(教师用书独具)●教学目标初步掌握本课文中的词汇,浅层次理解课文,了解相关的背景知识。

2020年精编人教版英语资料Section_ⅠWarming Up & Reading —Prereading There are a great many plants and animals that live under the sea. Do you know something about sea turtles? And how they live under the sea? Please read the following passage to get the answers.Sea turtles are sometimes referred to as “marine turtles”, referencing the fact that they have adapted to living primarily in the marine environment. All seven living species of sea turtles are endangered, and conservation efforts all over the world are attempting to prevent the extinction of sea turtles. The loss of sea turtles would not just be a blow to biodiversity: sea turtles are also important for the health of the world's oceans.Like other turtles, sea turtles have a hard shell into which they can retreat. Their front legs have adapted into a flipperlike (鳍状的) form which allows them to swim rapidly and efficiently, and their bodies are slightly flattened to reduce resistance in the water. Some sea turtles can also use their flippers for climbing. The sea turtle has developed a respiratory (呼吸的) system which allows it to dive and stay underwater for as long as five minutes. Depending on the turtle's level of activity and stress, it may need to surface soon for air. Sea turtles breathe in explosively, filling their lungs with enough air to supply them during dives.Sea turtles feed on other marine life and seagrass, a flowering plant which is widespread in the world's oceans. They can be found in every ocean except the Arctic. Sea turtles are especially vulnerable (易受伤的) during egg laying, since many are slow and unhandy on land, and the eggs may be broken by careless walkers or viewed as a tasty snack by numerous predators. Once the eggs hatch, the young make their way to the ocean and begin their water life. The smallest sea turtles reach a length of around 30 inches, while the largest can exceed six feet. Sea turtles live for up to 80 years, and once they reach their maturity, they are difficult for predators to kill, thanks to their hard shells. They are easily vulnerable, however, to trawling and a variety of other human activities, along with changes in the marine environment such as coral bleaching (珊瑚白化) and nutrient pollution.(1)________ a mammal which lives in the sea and looks like a large fish witha pointed mouth, related to the whales but generally smaller(2)________ a sea creature with a clear soft body and tentacles (触须;触角) that can sting you(3)________ a sea plant like a garden plant with red, purple, or white flowers(4)________ a large reptile (爬行动物) which has a thick shell covering its body(5)________ a hard substance formed from the skeletons of very small sea animals. It is often used to make jewelry(6)________ a type of small fish which appears to swim in an upright position and whose head looks a little like the head of horse(7)________ a large animal with flippers, which eats fish and lives partly on land and partly in the sea, usually in cold parts of the world(8)________ a very large mammal with the general shape of a fish and one or two blowholes for breathing答案:(1)~(5) BEGAD (6)~(8) CFH2.Fill in the blanks according to the following pictures.(1)Killer whales are one of the top predators (食肉动物)in the sea. After working there he witnessed it with his own eyes many times. On the afternoon he arrived, when he was sorting out his 1.accommodation (accommodate), he heard a loud noise coming from the bay.
Moby Dick (excerpt)PitchpolingTo make them run easily and swiftly, the axles of carriages are anointed;and for much the same purpose, some whalers perform a similar operation upon their boat;they grease the bottom.Nor is it to be doubted that as such a procedure can do no harm,it may possibly be of no contemptible advantage;considering that oil and water are hostile;that oil is a sliding thing, and that the object in view is to make the boat slide bravely.Queequeg believed strongly in anointing his boat, and one morning not long after the German ship Jungfrau disappeared, took more than customary pains in that occupation;crawling under its bottom, where it hung over the side, and rubbing as though diligently seeking to insure a crop of hair from the craft’s bald keel.He seemed to be working in obedience to some particular presentiment.Nor did it remain unwarranted by the event.Towards noon whales were raised;but so soon as the ship sailed down to them, they turned and fled swiftly.Nevertheless, the boats pursued, and Stubb’s was foremost.By great effort,Tashtego at last succeeded in planting one iron;but the stricken whale, without at all sounding, still continued his horizontal flight, with added speed.Suchunintermitted strainings upon the planted iron must sooner or later inevitably extract it。
It became imperative to lance the flying whale,or be content to lose him。
But to haul the boat up to his flank was impossible,he swam so fast and furious。
What then remained?Of all the wondrous devices and dexterities, the sleights of hand and countless subtleties,to which the veteran whaleman is so often forced, none exceed that fine manoeuvre with the lance called pitchpoling.Small sword,or broad sword,in all its exercises boasts nothing like it.It is only indispensable with an inveterate running whale;its grand fact and feature is the wonderful distance to which the long lance is accurately darted from a violently rocking, jerking boat, under extreme headway。
Steel and wood included, the entire spear is some ten or twelve feet in length;the staff is much slighter than that of the harpoon, and also of a lighter material—pine。
It is furnished with a small rope called a warp,of considerable length,by which it can be hauled back to the hand after darting. But before going further,it is important to mention here, that though the harpoon may be pitchpoled in the same way with the lance, yet it is seldom done;and when done,is still less frequently successful,on account of the greater weight and inferior length of the harpoon as compared with the lance, which in effect become serious drawbacks. As a general thing, therefore, you must first get fast to a whale, before any pitchpoling comes into play.Look now at Stubb;a man who from his humorous, deliberate coolness and equanimity in the direst emergencies, was specially qualified to excel in pitchpoling.Look at him;he stands upright in the tossed bow of the flying boat;wrapt in fleecy foam, the towing whale is forty feet ahead。
Handling the long lance lightly, glancing twice or thrice along its length to see if it be exactly straight,Stubb whistlingly gathers up the coil of the warp inone hand,so as to secure its free end in his grasp, leaving the rest unobstructed. Then holding the lance full before his waistband’s middle,he levels it at the whale;when, covering him with it,he steadily depresses the butt。
end in his hand, thereby elevating the point till the weapon stands fairly balanced upon his palm, fifteen feet in the air.He minds you somewhat of a juggler, balancing a long staff on his chin。
Next moment with a rapid, nameless impulse,in a superb lofty arch the bright steel spans the foaming distance, and quivers in the life spot of the whale.Instead of sparkling water,he now spouts red blood. That drove the spigot out of him!cried Stubb。
“It’s July’s immortal Fourth;all fountains must run wine today!Would now,it were old Orleans whiskey,or old Ohio! Then,Tashtego, lad,I'd have ye hold a can to the jet,and we’d drink round it!”Again and again to such gamesome talk, the dexterous dart is repeated, the spear returning to its master like a greyhound held in skilful leash。
The agonized whale goes into his flurry;the tow。
line is slackened, and the pitchpoler dropping astern, folds his hands, and mutely watches the monster die.《白鲸》(节选)投杆为了使车轴转得又滑又快,就得给车厢的车轴加油;有些捕鲸人为了一样的目的,也对他们的小艇使用类似的办法;他们给艇底擦油.
