Multicolored creations of varying shapes and sizes filled the skies like beautiful birds darting and dancing. As the strong winds gusted against the kites,a string kept them in check.Instead of blowing away with the wind, they arose against it to achieve great heights. They shook and pulled, but the restraining string and the cumbersome tail kept them in tow, facing upward and against the wind. As the kites struggled and trembled against the string, they seemed to say,“Let me go!Let me go!I want to be free!”Th ey soared beautifully even as they fought the restriction of the string. Finally, one of the kites succeeded in breaking loose. “Free at last,”it seemed to say. “Free to fly with the wind.”Yet freedom from restraint simply put it at the mercy of an unsympathetic breeze. It fluttered ungracefully to the ground and landed in a tangled mass of weeds and string against a dead bush. “Free at last” free to lie powerless in the dirt,to be blown helplessly along the ground, and to lodge lifeless against the first obstruction. How much like kites we sometimes are. The Heaven gives us adversity and restrictions, rules to follow from which we can grow and gain strength. Restraint is a necessary counterpart to the winds of opposition. Some of us tug at the rules so hard thatwe never soar to reach the heights we might have obtained. We keep part of the commandment and never rise high enough to get our tails off the ground.Let us each rise to the great heights, recognizing that some of the restraints that we may chafe under are actually the steadying force that helps us ascend and achieve.

When my legs were first paralyzed, my temper became terrible. Looking at the lines of wildgeese flying back north, I would suddenly smash the window pane in front of me. Listening tothe sweet songs sung by the famous singer Li Guyi, I would throw whatever happened to be onhand at the wall. On these occasions Mother would steal out quietly, watching me from a placewhere I could not see her. When I calmed down, she would come back softly and gaze at mewith sad eyes.“听说北海的花儿都开了,我推着你去走走。
“They say that the flowers in Beihai Park are in bloom now. Let me wheel you there,” she usedto say. Mother loved flo wers dearly, but ever since my legs became paralyzed, all her flowershad died.“不,我不去!” I shouted, while beating my cursed legs as hard as I could. “What am I stillliving for?” Mother would then rush up to me, holding my hands in hers and saying betweensubdued sobs, “The two of us should live together happily, happily…”

What struck you first, as he was steered into the room, was his commanding height: his throne-like wheelchair lifted his broad-shouldered bulk off the ground; sitting down, you found yourself tilting your head upwards to look at him.The accident's power over him was diminishing, he said, as his ventilator sucked and hissed. He no longer snapped awake in the quiet hours, forced to confront, all over again, the fact that he had no sensation from the neck down. He didn't need to turn away when he was driven past the barn where he kept Buck, the thoroughbred horse from which he had been thrown in 1995, breaking his neck. But learning to live with his paralysis wasn't the same as resigning himself to it. "I've still never had a dream that I'm disabled," he said. "Never." He had vowed, controversially, to walk again by the age of 50. At the time, that deadline was three weeks away.Walking by 50 had only ever been a hope, not a prediction, Reeve insisted. But what made the news of his death so acutely disorienting was the fact that, on some level, so many of us thought that, eventually - albeit a few years behind schedule - he might actually do it. Of course, he had always stressed that ordinary disabled people were the real superheroes in response to theinevitable movie-themed questions. But for the rest of us, the personal narrative was too seductive to resist: Superman, brought down to earth, ultimately triumphs again through sheer force of will.―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――英雄的生与死你最好把怜悯丢在克里斯托弗•里夫通风良好、充满阳光的家门外。

英语文选精粹Selected Readings in English(英汉对照)1.AgeThe same space seems shorter as we grow older… in youth we may have an absolutely new experience, subjective or objective, every hour of the day. Apprehension is vivid, retentiveness strong, and our recollections of that time, like those of a time spent in rapid and interesting travel, are of long-drawn out. But as each passing year converts some of this experience into automatic routine which we hardly note at all, the days and the week smooth themselves out in recollection to contentless units, and years grow hollow and collapse.

Napoleon declared, “Victory belongs to the mostpersevering.”Upon careful study we findperseverance depends upon three things - purpose, will, and enthusiasm. He who has apurpose is always concentrating his forces.By thewill, the hope and the plan are prevented fromevaporating into dreams.Enthusiasm keeps theinterest up, and makes the obstacles seem small.Life is in a sense a battle. The man who thinks to get on by mere smartness and by idling meetsfailure atlast.Perseverance is the master impulse of the firmest souls, and holds the key tothose treasure-houses of knowledge from which the world has drawn its wealth both of wisdomand of moral worth.Great men never wait for opportunities; they make them. They seize upon whatever is at hand, work out their problem, and master the situation. The greatest thing a man can do in this worldis to make the most possible out of the stuff that has been given to him. This is success andthere is no other. One of the important lessons of life is to learn how to get victory out of defeat. It takescourage and stamina, when mortified by humiliating disaster, to seek in the ruins the elementsof future conquest. Yet this measures the difference between those who succeed and thosewho fail. We cannotmeasure a man by his failures. We must know what use he makes ofthem. The man who has not fought his way upward and does not bear the scar of desperateconflict does not know the highest meaning of success.
There have been several examples recently in the London theatre of what show business calls cross-casting: men playing female roles or women men’s, the latter being much more common to offset the much larger proportion of male parts in plays.
Regender一般用来指the rewriting of texts to convert male parts into female ones in a play(在戏剧演出中将作品中的男性角色改成女性角色,即角色重塑),与现实演出中的“反串”表演并不是一回事。

My kids know nothing about money and will squander the family fortunes. Two years later, the one-day seminar aimed at the grown children of what the bank calls its "high net worth families" has a waiting list, and is taking to the road to teach heirs and heiresses across Canada how to manage their money."Word has gotten out about the program," said Jean Blacklock, vice-president of wealth services at Canada's fourth-largest bank. "Our competitors are not offering anything similar ... and parents are very happy to see how excited their children were after attending the seminar."Many were less thrilled before they attended, forced to participate by parents who control the purse strings."Levels of interest vary," admitted Jim Davies, the New-York based expert who teaches the day-long course. "You get one who says: 'I play the guitar and draw, and my father told me I have to go to this or he'd cut me off'."But the economic crisis and grim headlines have upped appetites for the seminar, aimed at teaching a few key generalities: how to set goals, balance a budget, and avoid getting swindled by Bernie Madoff-esque money managers."They're concerned about that, of course they are," said Davies, a New York Institute of Finance faculty member who has been teaching children of the wealthy for 20 years. The code word for the seminar is discretion. Blacklock declined to name clients, saying only that parents have a net worth of at least C$500,000. She said it is frequently afamily affair."Siblings often come together, or we have cousin combinations," Blacklock explained, showing the plush seminar room, 68 stories above Toronto's financial district, where wealthy heirs had enjoyed wall-to-wall views of Lake Ontario only moments before.(Agencies)
