Does appeal have the same meaning in the two situations? Can you guess what does it mean in each sentence?T: In sentence a, appeal means to attract or interest somebody and it is used as a verb. In sentence b, appeal refers to a quality that makes somebody or something attractive or interesting.(2)Learn other meanings of appeal.T: The ability to guess the meaning of a word according to the context is important. Can you guess the meanings of appeal in the following sentences?T: In sentence a, appeal means to make a formal request to a court or to somebody in authority for a judgement or a decision to be changed and in sentence b, it means to make a serious and urgent request.T: Can you tell me the part of speech of appeal in the above two sentences? Yes, they are both verbs. What’s the meaning of description here? A description of something is the act of writing or saying in words what something is like. Literature gives a description of truth and beauty. That is to say, literature tells us what truth and beauty are like. Can you think of other situations in which we can use description? Think about this situation: If someone broke the law and ran away, what may the police do? Can you translate the sentence into English?(2) Learn the collocations of description.T: Here are some common phrases related to description. We know we can say give a description of or issue a description of. What adjectives can be used before description? For example, “Police issued a detailed description of the man.”What other adjectives can you think of to modify description?(3) Learn the verb form of description.T: Do you remember the verb form of description? Can you translate the sentence into English?5.Word study: reflect(1)Understand the meanings of reflect in the text.T: What does reflect mean in this sentence from the text? It means to throw back light, heat, sound, etc. from a surface. Can you translate this sentence into English?T: Now let’s look at these two sentences in paragraph 5. In these two sentences, reflect means to show what something is like or the nature of something or somebody’s attitude or feeling. Can you translate this sentence into English?(2)Learn other meanings and collocations of reflect.T: I have two more sentences for you. What’s the meaning of reflect in each sentence? In sentence a, reflect means to show the image of somebody or something on the surface of sth such as a mirror, water or glass. In sentence b, it means to think carefully and deeply about something. Different meanings have different collocations. We use be reflected in for the first meaning and reflect on/upon for the second meaning.6. Word study: capable (be capable of)Understand the meanings of capable in the text and in other situations.T: Please look at the sentence from the text. “One who reads it is capable of seeing the beauty that was hidden from his eyes before.” That is to say, he or she has the ability to discover the hidden beauty. People who are capable of doing something means they have the ability or qualities necessary for doing something. Can you translate this sentence into English?T: Let’s look at another sentence. “She is a very capable teacher.” What does capable mean in this sentence? Here it means having the ability to do things well.7. Word study: contain(1) Understand the meaning of contain in the text.T: How can literature achieve permanence according to the article? To achieve it, literature should contain two elements: universal interest and personal style. That is to say, the literature has to have both universal interest and personal style inside it to achieve permanence. Contain here means to have sth inside it or as part of it.(2)Learn other meanings of contain.T:Contain has two other meanings: first, to keep your feelings under control and second, to prevent something harmful from spreading or getting worse. I have two examples for you. What’s the meaning of contain in each sentence?(3) Learn the difference between contain and include.T: Contain and include seem quite similar to each other. Actually, they are different. If something contains something else, it has that thing inside it or as part of it. If one thing includes another, it has the sec ond thing as one of its parts. Since you know their difference now, let’s practise using them. Please fill in the blanks.8. Word study: element(1) Understand the meaning of element in the text.T: What does element in the sentence mean? Here element refers to a necessary or typical part of something. Can you translate this sentence into English?(2) Learn the collocations of element.T: Just now we use the collocation of a key element. What other adjectives can be used before element?T: We can use other adjectives such as important, essential and vital.9. Word study: (in) summary(1) Understand the meaning of in summary in the text.T: At the end of the article, the author concludes the article with in summary. We have several phrases expressing the same meaning. Can you think of some?(2) Learn the meaning and verb form of summary.T: Summary is an important word.
