据资料介绍，库木塔格是维吾尔语中沙子山的意思，沙子的蒙古语叫“库木格”，比较接近。库木塔格沙漠位于甘肃西部和新疆东南部交界处，北接阿奇克谷地与敦煌雅丹国家地质公园一线，南抵 阿尔金山，西以罗布泊大耳朵为界，东接安南坝保护区，地理坐标也处在北纬三十九度，沙漠面积约两万两千平方公里。它的主体在新疆，甘肃境内也有不少分布，这一大片沙漠地带已设立三个野骆驼 和野马自然保护区。莫贺延碛戈壁位于安南坝保护区西北部，又称噶顺戈壁，当年玄奘在那里遭遇到西行途中最为险恶的考验。中华书局出版的《大唐大慈恩寺三藏法师传》里有详细介绍。莫贺延碛正 好处在河西走廊西端连接带上，受安西大风影响，四季狂风呼啸，加上库木塔格沙漠和雅丹地貌奇特，使得莫贺延碛地形变得更加复杂，气候百变，流沙埋人，十分恐怖。据说唐玄奘九死一生渡过流沙 河之后，回味莫贺延碛时还心有余悸：“莫贺延碛长八百里，古曰沙河。上无飞鸟下无走兽，伏无水草顾影唯一。四夜五日口腹干焦，几将殒绝。四顾茫然，夜则妖魅举火，灿若繁星，昼则惊风拥沙， 散若时雨。”后人演绎的《西游记》则把莫贺延碛改成了汹涌澎湃的流沙河，沙和尚在这里等待玄奘。文学人的想象和创造，也十分神奇。无独有偶，十九世纪俄国探险家、文化大盗普热瓦尔斯基路经 莫贺延碛也是心惊肉跳，他在日记中曾写“大碛到处是高台，像塔一样的黄土悬崖，土壤被掺着沙砾的卵石覆盖着，戈壁中既没有植物，也没有动物，甚至连蜥蜴和昆虫也没有，白天地面灼热，笼罩着 一层像烟雾的浑浊空气，一路上到处可以看见骡马和骆驼的骨头，呈现出一片十分可怕的景象” 。
