随堂训练1In Britain and other countries, young people sometimes take a“gap year”, a year off between high school and college. This idea never gained a big following in America. Recent news reports have suggested that interest may be growing, though there are no official numbers.Charles Deacon, Dean of Admissions at Georgetown University in Washington, D. C. estimates that in the current first-year class of 1, 600 students, only about 25 decided to take a year off. He says this number has not changed much over the years.Mr Deacon says the most common reason for taking a “gap year” is to have a chance to travel, but he says international students may take a“gap year”to meet requirements at home for military duty.Some high school graduates see a year off as a chance to recover after twelve years of required education, but it can also give students a chance to explore their interests. Students hoping to be doctors, for example, could learn about the profession by volunteering in a hospital.Many colleges and universities support gap-year projects by permitting students to delay their admission. Experts say students cangrow emotionally and intellectually as they work at something they enjoy.The Harvard admissions office has an essay on its website called “Time Out or Burn Out for the Next Generation. ”It praises the idea of taking time off to step back, think and enjoy gaining life experience outside the pressure of studies. It also notes that students are sometimes admitted to Harvard or other colleges partly because they did something unusual with that time.Of course, a“gap year”is not for everyone; students might miss their friends who go on directly to college. And parents might worry that their children will decide not to go to college once they take time off. Another concern is money. A year off, away from home, can be costly.Holly Bull’s job is to specialize in helping students plan their“gap year”. She notes that several books hav e been written about this subject. She says these books along with media attention and the availability of information on the Internet have increased interest in the idea of a year off, and she points out that many gap-year programs cost far less than a year of college.【文章大意】本文主要介绍了英国的高中毕业生应该如何度过高中和大学之间的“gap year”, 这种做法也开始在美国流行。

It made school difficult for me. When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not.In my first literature class, Mrs.Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all within 45 minutes. I raised my hand right away and said,“Mrs.Smith, you see, the doctor said I have a ttention problems. I might not be able to do it.”She glanced down at me through her glasses, “you are no different from your classmates, young man.”I tried, but I didn’t finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home.In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn’t get much education. But Louis didn’t give up. Instead, he invented a reading system of raised dots(点), which opened up a whole newworld of knowledge to the blind.Wasn’t I the “blind” in my class, being made to learn like the “sighted” students? My thoughts spilled out and my pen started to dance. I completed the task within 40 minutes. Indeed, I was no different from others; Ijust needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out of his problems, why should I ever give up?I didn’t expect anything when I handled in my paper to Mrs.Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day- with an“A” on it. A pony(马驹) bit me earlier.”As it happened, the bite was virtually painless: more the kind of small bite you might get from a naughty child. The pony responsible was queuing up for some ice c ream in the car park near Haytor, and perhaps thought I’d jumped in ahead of him.The reason why the ponies here are naughty is that Haytor is a tourist-heavy area and tourists are constantly feeding the ponies foods, despite sighs asking them not to. By feeding the ponies, tourists increase the risk of them getting hit by a car, and make them harder to gather during the area’s annual pony drift(迁移).The purpose of a pony drift is to gather them up so their health can be checked, the baby ones can b e stooped from feeding on their mother’s milk, and those who’ve gone beyond their limited area can be returned to their correct area. Some of them are also later sold, in order to limit the number of ponies according to the rules set by Natural England.Three weeks ago, I witnessed a small near-disaster a few mils west of here. While walking, I noticed a pony roll over on his back. “Hello!” I said to him, assuming he was just rolling for fun, but he was very still and, as I got closer, I saw him kicking his legs in the air and breathing heavily. I began to properly worry about him. Fortunately, I managed to get in touch with a Dartmoor’s Livestock Protection officer and send her a photo. The officer immediately sent a local farmer out to check on the pony. The pony had actually been trapped between two rocks. The farmer freed him, and he began to run happily around again.Dartmoor has 1,000 or so ponies, who play a critical role in creating thediversity of species in this area. Many people are working hard to preserve these ponies, and trying to come up with plans to find a sustainable(可持续的) future for one of Dartmoor’s most financially-troubled elements.25.Why are tourists asked not to feed the ponies?A. To protect the tourists from being bittenB. To keep the ponies off the petrol stationC. To avoid putting the ponies in dangerD. It will affect tourism in Dartmoor.D. It has caused an imbalance of species3.If humans were truly at home under the light of the moon and stars, we would go in darkness happily, the midnight world as visible to us as it is to the vast number of nocturnal(夜间活动的) species on this planet. Instead, we are diurnal creatures, with eyes adapted to living in the sun’s light. This is a basic evolutionary fact, even though most of us don’t think of ourselves as diurnal beings. Yet it’s the only way to explain what we’ve done to thenight: We’ve engineered it to receive us by filling it with light.The benefits of this kind of engineering come with consequences 一called light pollution 一whose effects scientists are only now beginning to study. Light pollution is largely the result of bad lighting design,which allows artificial light to shine outward and upward into the sky. III-designed lighting washes out the darkness of night and completely changes the light levels 一and light rhythms —to which many forms of life, including ourselves, have adapted. Wherever human light spills into the natural world, some aspect or life is affected.In most cities the sky looks as though it has been emptied of stars, leaving behind a vacant haze(霾) that mirrors our fear of the dark. We’ve grown so used to this orange haze that the original glory of an unlit night —dark enough for the planet Venus to throw shadow on Earth—is wholly beyond our experience, beyond memory almost.We’ve lit up the night as if it were an unoccupied country, when nothing could be further form the truth. Among mammals alone, the number of nocturnal species is astonishing. Light is a powerful biological force, and on many species it acts as a magnet(磁铁). The effect is so powerful that scientists speak of songbirds and seabirds being “captured” by searchlights on land or by the light from gas flares on marine oil platforms. Migrating at night, birds tend to collide with brightly lit tall buildings.Frogs living near brightly lit highways suffer nocturnal light levels that are as much as a million times brighter than normal, throwing nearly every aspect of their behavior out of joint, including most other creatures, we doneed darkness .Darkness is as essential to our biological welfare, to our internal clockwork, as light itself.Living in a glare of our own making, we have cut ourselves off from our evolutionary and cultural heritage—the light of the stars and the rhythms of day and night. In a very real sense, light pollution causes us to lose sight of our true place in the universe, to forget the scale of our being, which is best measured against the dimensions of a deep night with the Milky Way—the edge of our galaxy—arching overhead.31.According to the passage, human being .A. prefer to live in the darknessB. are used to living in the day lightC. were curious about the midnight worldD. had to stay at home with the light of the moon32.What does “it”(Paragraph 1) most probably refer to?A. One person I’m grateful to
【参考范文】
One person I’m grateful to
We are supposed to be grateful to people who are always there with us because they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.
My English teacher is such a great soul, to whom I owe many thanks. During the previous study, my biggest flaw must come to carelessness,
which worried me a lot. To make matters worse, I was too anxious to seek the fundamental reason for my failure. I just dedicated myself to huge amounts of practice, regardless of repeated mistakes. Fortunately, my teacher noticed it and offered to have a long talk with me. Having been persuaded to change my attitude, I finally got the right way to rid myself of carelessness and gained confidence as well.
I am grateful to my English teacher for all the support he has given me, which has made me stronger and a better person.

Ladies and gentlemen,
It’s my honor to give a speech here.
Thank you!
【参考范文】
Ladies and gentlemen,
It’s my honor to give a speech here. In my opinion, this proverb means we can make things easier by working with others. It reveals the significance of cooperation.
Take my experience as an example. Once we were given a complicated physics problem by our teacher and were expected to work it out whatever the way was. Naturally, everyone in our class was eager to be the first one to solve it. Considering that I was very good at identifying the physical principles and my friend Joe was better at performing complex calculations, we decided to work together. Magically, we solved the problem efficiently and even were better than the top students who chose to work alone.
This experience really impressed me a lot. So always keep in mind that cooperation not only contributes to greater working efficiency but also explores our potential.
Thank you!

请根据以下提示, 并结合事例, 用英语写一篇短文。
To have dreams for the future is important, but we should
remember only when we work hard for our dreams can we realize our dreams.
注意: 1. 无须写标题;
2. 内容必须结合你生活中的一个事例;
3. 词数: 100-120。
【参考范文】
It is generally believed that everyone should have dreams for the future. At the same time, to do something to make your dream come true is more important.
Take my cousin’s experience as an example. My cousin has a big dream that he wants to be a doctor when he grows up. However, what he did didn’t agree with his speech. Seeing this, his parents reminded him that if he just talked about his dream and didn’t put it into action, it would be nothing but a daydream. At that moment, he suddenly realized that he should work very hard and did whatever he could to realize his dream. Finally, his efforts paid off. He was admitted to a medical college and is getting closer to his dream.
From the example mentioned above, we can easily draw a conclusion that it is what you devote rather than what you say that helps
you come close to your dream.
