例如,“The injured man was taken to the hospital”(那个受伤的男人被送到了医院。
比如,“Seen from the top of the mountain, the city looks beautiful”(从山顶上看,这座城市很美。
)“Seen”
比如,“It is + adj +for sb to do sth”(对某人来说做某事是……的),“There is no doubt that”(毫无疑问……)

Love Is a FallacyBy Max Shulman I.Background informationA.The author: Max Shulman (March 14, 1919–August 28, 1988) is a 20thcentury American writer best known for his television and short storycharacter Dobie Gillis, as well as for best-selling novels. His writing oftenfocused on young people, particularly in a collegiate setting. Shulman wasalso a screenwriter. He was one of the collaborators on a televisiondocumentary, Light's Diamond Jubilee, which was supposedly a celebrationof the 75th anniversary of the invention of the light bulb by Thomas A.Edison, but which was in reality little more than a public relations piece forthe electric industry, as its predecessor film, Light's Golden Jubilee, had been25 years before.II.Text AnalysisA.Summary: Dobie Gillis,a self-conceited freshman in a law school,is theprotagonist. He struggles against two antagonists:Petey Burch, his stupidroommate whose girl friend he plans to steal, and Polly Espy, the beautifuldumb girl he intends to marry after suitable re-education.Petey,a faddist,is eager for a raccoon coat, and he decides to exchange his girl friend Peteyfor it with Dobie.Dobie has affection for Polly for long out of practicalconsiderations. Dumb as Polly is,she has the makings to become a suitablewife of a lawyer. In order to smarten her up,Dobie decides to give her acourse in logic. He teaches her how to recognize the common fallacies oflogic. He succeeds too well because the whole thing backfires on him whenPolly refutes all his arguments as logical fallacies before finally rejectinghim. In desperation Dobie argues that“the things you learn in school don'thave anything to do in life.”The appeal does not move Polly because Dobiedoes not own a raccoon coat as Petey Burch does.B.Character:1.Dobie Gillis: a law school student, very young, clever, over-conceited.2.Petey Burch: Dobie Gillis’s roommate, pitiful, dump, faddist.3.Polly Espy: beautiful, gracious, stupid(Dobie’s thought).C.Structure4 sectionsSect. I para 1-3–It is the author's note.– 1. The author's idea about this story.– 2. The author's idea about the purpose of this story.Sect II para. 4 --59The bargain between the law student and his roommate over the exchange of the girl.Sect III. para 60 -- 124The teaching of 8 logical fallaciesSect.IV. para125– the ending of the storyBackfiring of all the arguments. The girl learns her lessons too well. She uses all the logical fallacies to fight back her teacher.nguage PointA.Words and sentences:1. Maybe somehow…into flame:Perhaps I could develop the little intelligence still existing in Polly’s mind.2. Admittedly… hope: One must admit the outcome does not look very hopeful.3. Get nowhere: make no progress; accomplish nothing.4. Fight off: force or drive back.5. Y ou can’t start… from it: You can’t start with a supposition (in this case the “if” clause, “If Madame Curie had not happened to leave a photographic plate in a drawer with a chunk of pitchblende” ) that is not true and then draw conclusions (here, “ the world would not know about radium”) that can be proved to be true.6. I watched her… in concentration: I watched her as she thought very hard.7. Knit the brow: to draw the brows together (as when thinking very hard)8. Creamy: soft, white col or( of Polly’s complexion)9. Exultant: joyful and proud especially because of triumph or success10. We shall hammer away at this problem till we seta solution.B. Rhetorical features:1.Understatement---Restraint or lack of emphasis in expression, as for rhetorical effect. . 2. Litotes --- A figure of speech consisting of an understatement in which an affirmative is expressed by negating its opposite, as in: This is no small problem. 曲言法, 间接表达法, 反语法(以反面的否定代替肯定的词格, 如:no easy 代替very difficult, not bad 代替very good 等)3. Metaphor “There follows an informal essay that ventures even beyond Lamb’s frontier” Here the writer humorously compares the limitations set by Lamb to a frontier. “In other words, if you were out of the picture, the field would be open.” It means that if you’re no longer involved with her or if you stop dating her, others would be free to compete for her friendship.4. Language features : . American colloquialisma. Informal styleshort sentenceselliptical sentences --- to increase the tempo of the story dashesb. rhetorical devicessharp contrast in the language1) the law student uses ultra learned termsstandard English100% correct2) clipped vulgar forms, slang wordsgee, magnif, terrif, pshaw,c.Inverted sentences:d. What effect does the language have on the readers:– 1. vivid– 2. colorful– 3. informalmentThe theme is stated in the title: ”Love is a fallacy”, which can be understood in two ways. When “fallacy” is taken literally, the little means: “Love is deceptive or delusive”. When taken as a specific term in logic, it means: ”Love cannot be deduced from a set of given premises. ”The story reaches its climax in paragraphs 147-150 when Polly refuses to go steady with Dobie because she has already promised to go steady with Petey Burch. The denouement follows rapidly and ends in a very ironic note. Dobie ignores the fact that love is the sincere attachment which arises naturally from both hearts, and he fails to win Polly because he has been too clever for his own good. So, what is love? What kind of love should we pursue? As far as I am concerned, love is a complicated and purified thing. It is complex because it origins in the human’s innermost heart with no reason. The person you love would give you a kind of happiness, which anyone else cannot give you. It is purified because you are merely attracted by the other person and love him with no other desires. Also, real love not only meanspurified and pleasure, but also means obligation. This obligation means if you want to get love, you should also give love to others or even sacrifice. One who can not create happiness, even make sacrifice for his love, cannot be counted as a true lover. Dobie looks love as terms for his development in the future. He likes Polly, but he only likes her beauty. This is not love, because he also wants to change her to an ideal woman as his own desires. Thus, I think it I natural that he cannot get Polly’s love.。
