The earthquake has become a too-familiar experience in Tokyo, a crowded subway train screeches to a sudden stop. From around the car, mobile phones start to ring. The sound is an emergency earthquake warning from an iPhone app that lets users know when the quake will come, where the epicenter will be located and how strong the shaking will be. Often, seconds after the phone rings, the shaking starts.Japan has been hit by hundreds of aftershocks. After the devastating March 11 earthquake and ground sea, which have left nearly 28,000 dead and missing,The app called Yure Kuru, or shaking coming, was developed by RC Solution Co,a Tokyo-based firm that specializes in offerring disaster-related information services, such as relaying warnings or letting people confirm the safety of friends and family. "Emergency quake warnings began several years ago, but the machine to receive them was quite expensive," said Akira Kuriyama, president of RC Solution."We wondered if there wasn't a cheaper and easier way to provide this service, and we thought of smartphones." When the alarm rings out, a window comes up on the phone screen saying that in about 10 seconds, there will be a quake of a certain strength. Users can decide for themselves at what strength of quake the phone will ring. Now there are at least 1.5 million, and the company has stopped counting. The app is symbolized by a cartoon catfish, Because Japanese people thought the catfish can warn the earthquake. "We're very happy to be of service," Kuriyama said. "Among other things, there still isn't a lot of understanding about the quake warning. If our app helps more people learn about this, and increases their safety, we'll be pleased." A 阅读理解“Green Games” became a calling card for the 19th Asian Games, which were held from Sept 23 to Oct 8 in Hangzhou and five other cities in Zhejiang. To make the Games the world’s first waste-free sporting event, green energy sources were used at all 56 competition venues (场馆).Some of the renewable (可再生的) electricity used at the venues was photovoltaic energy (光伏能源), transmitted (传输) from areas such as Qinghai and Gansu. Another source was wind power which was made in areas including the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.A digital management platform was also started to help achieve carbon neutrality (碳中和) during the Asian Games. On the platform, digital technologies were used for managing carbon emissions (排放) from venues in the six cities where the Games were held. The technologies included data collection and emissions reduction (减排) and evaluation.Among all of the Games’ 56 competition venues, just 12 were newly built. The rest were existing facilities (设施) repaired as part of the organizers’ mission of sustainability (持续性).The Shangcheng Sports Centre Stadium, the venue used for soccer events at the Games, was first built in 2019.During the venue’s renovation, its solar-film ceiling and spectator (观众) seating – both of which had been used for 14 years but remained in good condition – were kept after being scientifically assessed (评估). This helped to reduce building costs by nearly 8 million yuan. The race track of Chun’an Jieshou Sports Centre’s velodrome (自行车赛场) was covered with 374 interchangeable components (部件) which can continue to use after the competition ended.Zhejiang also improved public entry to the venues and hosted sports events in them. For the move, she had to make a 540-degree turn. In the end, she won the women’s taijiquan and taijijian all-round gold (女子太极拳太极剑全能金牌) at the sports event.Tong’s slow but strong actions with her sword (剑) showed perfectly Chinese wushu’s beautiful mix of soft and hard moves. As a sport showing regional (区域的) culture, wushu was included in the Asian Games in 1990. Apart from wushu, many other special sports from different Asian areas were also seen at the sports event, making it a party of folk cultures. Kabaddi (卡巴迪) and sepak takraw (藤球) are two examples.Kabaddi (卡巴迪) is a folk sport from India and has a history of more than 4,000 years. As the athletic form (竞技版) of the game “eagle (老鹰) catching chickens”, kabaddi needs nothing but an area that is 13 meters long and 10 meters wide.Sepak takraw first became popular in Southeast Asia. It is similar to the traditional Chinese game of shuttlecock kicking (踢毽子). Players need to use their feet, head, knees and other parts of their body to move the ball. It is also called “kick volleyball”.Although the Asian Games don’t include as many countries as the Olympic Games, they have even more events, especially the ones born out of the Asian region. This makes it really unique. As Chinese President Xi Jinping said at the event’s opening ceremony (开幕式), “The 19th Asian Games have included many disciplines (项目) with distinctive (有特色的) Asian features. It provides a platform (舞台) to celebrate sports and culture, and showcases Asian culture that is inclusive (包容的), vibrant (充满活力的) and always keen (渴望的) to learn from others.”1.What gold medal did Tong Xin win at the Asian Games?A. An internet user pays the seller some money to abuse the victim (受害者) through social media. However, this is not right or legal. To know more about this, Teens talked to Xing Junxia, a lawyer at the S&P Law Firm in Beijing. In life, we may say bad words to people we don’t like. If it gets serious, it becomes verbal abuse. “The act of verbal abuse violates (侵犯) the victim’s rights,” Xing said. “These words usually hurt the victim’s right to reputation (名誉权), which can lead to civil liability (民事责任).” The attacker (攻击者) should stop this right away. He or she should also formally (正式地) say sorry to the victim. This is to cut down the influence of the abuse.Xing pointed out that both the attacker and the payer should bear civil liability because they do it together. In more serious situations, the attacker will face administrative penalties (行政处罚). A man in Qiqihar, Heilongjiang, who ran an online verbal abuse “service” and had abused 25 people, was recently caught. Although he knew it was illegal, he believed it was an easy way to make money. In the end, he was fined (处罚) 500 yuan and handed over all of the illegal money he had got.In the most serious situations, Xing said, verbal abuse can make the victim ill. The attacker should then face criminal liability (刑事责任). It means that he or she may spend time in prison (监狱), said Xing.1. If you are abused verbally, you can legally _____.A. ask the attacker for some moneyB. ask the attacker to stop and say sorryC. post the attacker’s acts onlineD. beat the attacker2. Recently, many Chinese young people have turned to trees to help with their stress. Although it sounds strange, there’s a science behind the act of tree-hugging.It can be explained by the “biophilia hypothesis (亲生命假说)”. It was pointed out by US scientist Edward Wilson in 1984. He said that humans are born to love being around other living things. Humans’ love for nature is “in our DNA”. This idea helps to explain why people prefer natural, green views to city views. It’s also one of the reasons why people love cute pets. Some studies have looked into why tree-hugging can help with our health. A study in 2021 reported that the activity can increase oxytocin (催产素). It’s a hormone responsible for feelings. The higher the level of oxytocin is, the calmer and happier you may be. Hugging trees for only 21 seconds can lead to an increase in oxytocin.Another hormone called cortisol (皮质醇) is a marker of stress. The brain produces more cortisol when the person is anxious (焦虑的), angry, or very sad. Hugging trees helps cut cortisol production, which makes us feel better.Although the activity is helpful to us, it’s important to keep in mind that we shouldn’t hurt nature while doing it. Trees often hold valuable ecosystems (生态环境). Many small creatures live on the tree – and they are too small to be seen. You may want to be gentle when hugging trees – just like how you hug a friend!1. Which of the following can be explained by the “biophilia hypothesis”?A. People feel relaxed in parks.B. People like doing exercises.C. People love visiting historical sites.D. People like to live in cities.2. How might people feel with a lower hormone oxytocin?A. They might feel calm and happy.B. They might feel angry and sad.C. They might feel relaxed and scared.D. They might feel happy and sad.3. What is the right relationship between the hormone cortisol and our feelings?A. We feel sadder with a lower level of cortisol.B. We feel angrier with a lower level of cortisol.C. We feel more stressed with a higher level of cortisol.D. We feel much happier with a higher level of cortisol.4. What can we learn from the story?A. Hugs give people energy.B. The “biophilia hypothesis” is partly wrong.C. Tree-hugging is harmful to the environment.D. Hugging trees in the right way helps reduce stress.语法填空Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai received a very important award (奖项) – the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement (终身成就金狮奖) at the 80th Venice Film Festival On Sept 2. Laozi, a famous Chinese philosopher (哲学家)A Chinese teacher called Zhen Daqian from a high school in Beijing gave further explanation: Laozi tells us the top character is just like water. All life in the world cannot live without water, but water never asks for anything in return. It just keeps giving quietly. Also, water often stays where people don’t like, such us low-lying wetlands and deserted valleys (空旷的山谷). This kind of low profile (低调) makes water the closest to the law of the universe. It seems that we have always taken qualities like bravery and strength as great virtues, but we should not forget what water has taught us.In dealing with people, we can act as water. Do our best to help others without trying to get fame or benefit. At the same time, stay modest (谦虚的). It’s unwise to always talk about the favors you gave to others. Even if no one cares about you in a difficult situation, you need to stay calm. After all, water will not choose where to be, it just flows to where it is needed. We know that the Chinese nation has always valued Laozi’s ideas about water. In 2014, President Xi Jinping mentioned it at the welcome dinner of the 22nd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Beijing. He said APEC members are brought together by the water of the Pacific Ocean and have a shared responsibility to make the Pacific an ocean of peace, friendship and cooperation (合作).1.Which of the following is not the quality of water?A.Low profiles.B.Bravery.C.Giving quietly.D.Never asking for anything in return2.What does the underlined word “disdain” mean?A.like B.hate C.enjoy D.admire3.What is the right way we should act as water in dealing with people?A.Staying proud.B.Helping others for fame and benefit.C.Staying excited in a difficult situation.D.Never talking about the favors you gave to others.4.What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?A.We Chinese nation has always valued Laozi’s ideas about water.B.The water of the Pacific Ocean is very important.C.All the APEC members should cooperate well with each other.D.All the APEC members should keep the peace of the Pacific Ocean. 5.Which of the following could be the best title for this passage?A.Laozi — A Famous Philosopher in ChinaB.Zhen Daqian—A Chinese TeacherC.Water — The Best VirtueD.Goodness — The Word and The World。

It was authenticated as a Gustav Klimt work that was stolen from the same gallery in 1997. It was reported that Klimt’s Portrait of a Lady was owned by the Ricci Oddi Gallery of Modern Art in 1925, with only the painting’s frame found on the roof of the museum.Investigations into the 1917 work, which is worth at about $66 million today, stopped over the next few decades. The break came by chance last month, when a museum gardener clearing ivy from a wall opened a metal access panel and discovered the painting inside. It was put in a plastic bag. Experts finally confirmed that the painting was not fake, and officials in Piacenza where the Ricci Oddi is located announced the news."It's with no small emotion that I can tell you the work is authentic," Piacenza Prosecutor Ornella Chicca said. An authenticator in Bologna said the painting is still in very good condition, having only suffered a scratch on an edge, possibly from a silly effort to remove the portrait from its frame. officials said X-rays aided in the authentication process, showing that Portrait of a Lady had been painted on the top of another portrait. As for why the painting had been stored within a wall, Anne Marie O'Connor, a journalist who had written about another of Klimt’s paintings, said that the thief knew it would be too difficult to sell the painting during the investigation at that time and perhaps planned to return one day and retrieve it. 快捷英语时文阅读七年级Fast English News Reading for Grade 7 Students。
In today's fast-paced world, English has become a global language that plays a crucial role in communication and education. As a seventh-grade student, it is essential to develop strong reading skills to comprehend and analyze various types of texts. This article aims to provide you with tips and strategies for fast English news reading, enabling you to improve your reading speed and comprehension.First and foremost, it is crucial to choose news articles that are suitable for your English proficiency level. Start with articles specifically written for learners or those with simplified language. This will help you understand the content more easily and build your confidence. As you progress, gradually challenge yourself with more complex articles from reputable news sources. To enhance your reading speed, it is essential to train your eyes to move quickly across the text. Avoid reading word by word, as this can slow you down. Instead, focus on reading phrases or groups of words at a time. This technique, known as "chunking," allows you to grasp the meaning of a sentence or paragraph more efficiently.Another effective strategy is skimming. Skimming involves quickly glancing over the text to get a general idea of the content. Pay attention to headings, subheadings, and the first and last sentences of each paragraph. This technique helps you identify the main ideas and key details without reading every word. While skimming provides a general understanding, it is equally important to develop your ability to scan for specific information. Scanning involves quickly searching for particular words, phrases, or numbers in the text. This skill is particularly useful when you need to find answers to specific questions or locate specific details within a news article.Vocabulary plays a significant role in understanding news articles. As you read, make a note of unfamiliar words and look up their meanings. Building a strongvocabulary will not only improve your comprehension but also enable you to express yourself more effectively in both spoken and written English.Furthermore, try to make connections between the news articles you read and your own life or the world around you. This will help you relate to the content and make it more memorable. Discussing current events and news stories with your classmates or teachers can also deepen your understanding and provide different perspectives. In addition to reading news articles, consider watching news broadcasts or listening to news podcasts in English. This will expose you to different accents, intonations, and vocabulary used in news reporting. It will also help you improve your listening skills, which are closely linked to reading comprehension.Lastly, practice regularly. Set aside dedicated time each day to read news articles in English. Start with shorter articles and gradually increase the length and complexity as you progress. Consistency is key to improving your reading skills and building confidence. In conclusion, developing fast English news reading skills is essential for seventh-grade students. By choosing suitable articles, using strategies such as chunking, skimming, and scanning, building vocabulary, making connections, and practicing regularly, you can enhance your reading speed and comprehension. Remember, reading is not just about understanding the words; it is about gaining knowledge, broadening your horizons, and becoming a critical thinker. Happy reading!。

高考时文阅读(passages 1-2)Passage 1 Giant leap for ChinaA few days ago, he was just Colonel (上校) Yang; few people knew his name or recognized his face. But last Thursday, when he came back to the earth after a 21-hour trip to space, Yang Liwei's smile was seen across the world above the magic words: "China's first spaceman".The 38-year-old astronaut was sent into space at 9 a.m. last Wednesday by China's Shenzhou V spacecraft, which orbited the earth 14 times. He landed safely at 6:23 a.m. the next day, making China the third country to successfully send a person into space, after the former Soviet Union and the US.Yang was satisfied with his job. "I have seen many landing scenes before on video, and I think ours was one of the most successful," he said on a special plane to Beijing after landing.Born into an ordinary family in Liaoning Province, he became a pilot in the Chinese Air Force in 1987, spending 1,350 hours in the air. He joined the Chinese space programme 11 years later. While in space, Yang recorded everything he saw as well as showing China's national flag and the United Nations' flag to the people watching on TV at home. He also ate a meal of diced chicken and fried rice, before taking a 3-hour nap. The whole project went according to plan, but space exploration is not as easy as it seems.Anyone who saw the destruction of the US space shuttle Columbia in February this year will know that Yang took a great risk.He experienced extremely high temperatures, while the gravitational forces (重力) on takeoff and landing were strong enough to force tears from his eyes.He has spent five years training to become a spaceman."I eat all of my meals at the space programme's dinning room and have never been able to take my son to kindergarten," he said. "I've never met his teachers."But becoming China's first spaceman has made all the effort worthwhile."When I boarded the spacecraft for the first time, I couldn't help feeling excited," he said. "I decided that I had to fly it."To Chinese people, Yang is now a hero. One visitor to a Xinhua news agency online forum (网上论坛) said: "Yang's trip is a giant leap forward for China."Officials say the next Shenzhou will be launched by 2005. Both A and B.Passage 2 Chinese fourth unmanned spacecraft into spaceChina blasted its fourth unmanned craft into space on Monday in what is likely a final test before sending its first astronaut into orbit around earth, state media said. The Shenzhou IV, or "Divine Ship," took off from its launch center in the northwestern province of Gansu early Monday morning and had already settled into its course around Earth, the official Xinhua news agency and newspapers reported. "The successful launch of the Shenzhou IV has laid a solid foundation for China to send Chinese astronauts into space," the China Daily quoted an official at the Beijing Aerospace Command and Control Center as saying. Like its predecessors, the craft will circle Earth once every 90 minutes. The vessel, which boasts a complete system needed for manned flight, will fly in space for a few days before landing.China's space program is a test of national pride as the country, growing fast after two decades of market-oriented reforms, seeks a place on the world stage alongside great powers. China aims to become the third nation in the world capable of putting people in space. The Soviet Union first accomplished the feat in 1961, with the United States following the next year. The country started its manned flight program in 1992, the Xinhua reported, adding astronauts had entered the Shenzhou IV to train for missions for the first time. In this article, we will explore the importance of reading current affairs in English for eighth graders and how it can benefit their language learning journey.First and foremost, reading current affairs in English can help students improve their language proficiency. As they read articles on various topics such as science, technology, environment, and social issues, they are exposed to a wide range of vocabulary and language structures. Additionally, reading about current events can also help students learn new idiomatic expressions and colloquial language that are commonly used in everyday English.Furthermore, reading current affairs in English can help students stay informed about the world around them. By reading about global events, students can develop a better understanding of different cultures, societies, and political systems. This can help them become more open-minded and empathetic individuals, as they learn to appreciate and respect diverse perspectives and viewpoints. Moreover, staying informed about current affairs can also help students become more aware of important issues such as climate change, human rights, and social justice, which can inspire them to become more socially responsible citizens. In addition to improving language skills and increasing global awareness, reading current affairs in English can also help eighth graders develop critical thinking skills. As they read articles on complex topics, students are encouraged to analyze and evaluate the information presented. They learn to question the validity of sources, identify biases, and form their own opinions based on evidence. This critical thinking process can help them become more discerning readers and independent thinkers, which are valuable skills for academic and personal development. Moreover, reading current affairs in English can also enhance students' writing skills. As they read well-structured and coherent articles, students can learn about different writing styles, argumentative techniques, and persuasive language. They can then apply these skills to their own writing, as they learn to express their thoughts and opinions in a clear and articulate manner.
Wang Xingyue, 14, from Shanghai:I don’t think we should set off firecrackers (爆竹) during holidays. It is really noisy. Some people fire them during midnight. People around cannot sleep well. Besides, it brings air pollution (污染) and lots of rubbish. Most people do not clean the rubbish after they set off firecrackers. So I think there is no need to set them off anymore during holidays.Liu Ran, 14, from Shandong:Setting off firecrackers is a tradition during Chinese festivals. They set them off to celebrate or wish a happy new year. The ceremony (仪式) is very important in Chinese people’s lives. And it also reminds (提醒) us of one of the four great inventions (发明) of China, gunpowder (火药). We cannot give it up. It is good to have this ceremony during holidays. Do you agree with me?Lin Yisong, 15, from Zhejiang:I think we should control (控制) the setting off of firecrackers. During holidays, the government could get people together in a place. They can set off some firecrackers or fireworks and people can watch. It is safer to do this and people can also enjoy their holiday tradition.Zhang Qi, 14, from Guangxi:Firecrackers are dangerous and bad for the air. But it is really an important tradition in Chinese festivals. So I think we can use something else to replace (代替) them. For example, we can use LED fireworks instead. It is also beautiful and attractive. And it is much safer. Even kids can play with them.Li Qing, 14, from Jiangsu:I think we can improve the technology of firecrackers. The firecrackers we use now are dangerous. That’s why we cannot fire them anytime or anywhere we want. But if we can make them much safer and good for the air, we don’t have to give up the interesting tradition during Chinese festivals.第二篇Birthday girl’s t rip of mystery神秘的银冠带来的奇幻之旅THE Silver Crown (《银色皇冠》)is an exciting read. It is abouta girl who wakes up on herbirthday to find a silver crownunder her pillow (枕头), butthe day doesn’t turn out asshe would have thought.Eventually she ends up in amysterious school and then ishunted for her crown. To findher family, the girl has totravel through forests, mountains and the countryside while meeting many interesting characters with completely different natures. There are many different characters and it is very hard to choose a favorite, as they are all individuals (与众不同的人) with their own personalities. The story kept me guessing as it takes many twists and turns (波折). My favorite part in the story was when the main character and her friend camp in a cave with gems (珍宝) in all of the walls. The description that the author gives here makes youthink and keep the pages turning. There was nothing I really disliked about this book. Perhaps apart from the fact it ended on a cliffhanger (悬念), which I personally do not like in books generally.Overall I think this is a great book. I recommend it to teenagers and people aged 11 onwards. It can keep you guessing and wondering, which is a great characteristic of a book for me!By Grace BaytonGrace Bayton, 13, is an eighth-grader at Newbridge School, Wales, UK. She loves reading and reads two books a week.。
