求其信，已大难矣！故信矣，不达，虽译，犹不译也，则达上焉。

——严复《天演论·译立言》1.原文：It is an ill wind that blows nobody good.译文：世事皆利弊并存。
赏析：原句结构比较特殊（"It is ... that ...")，理解起来有点困难。
“对谁都没有好处的风才是坏风”，也就是说大多数情况下风对人都是有好处、有坏处，再引申一步就成了上面的译句。
翻译的前提是理解。
有人指出，市面上见到的翻译作品，有好多都带有因理解不正确而产生的低级错误，“信”都谈不上还妄谈什么“达”和“雅”！初学翻译，在理解原文上当不遗余力。
2.原文：Their language was almost unrestrained by any motive of prudence. 译文：他们几乎爱讲什么就讲什么，全然不考虑什么谨慎不谨慎。
赏析：如果硬译，译文势必成了“他们的言论几乎不受任何深思熟虑的动机的约束”。
译者本其译，化其滞，将原句一拆为二，充分运用相关翻译技巧，译文忠实、通顺。
3.原文：Get a livelihood, and then practise virtue.译文：先谋生而后修身。
（钱钟书译）赏析：原句是祈使句，译句也传达出了训导的意味。
用“谋生”来译“Get a livelihood"，用“修身”来译“practise virtue",可谓精当。
巧的是，原句七个词，译句也是七个汉字。
4.原文：I enjoy the clean voluptuousness of the warm breeze on my skin and the cool support of water.译文:我喜爱那洁净的暖风吹拂在我的皮肤上使我陶然欲醉，也喜爱那清亮的流水把我的身体托浮在水面。

“信达雅”标准下的The Great Gatsby书名翻译译者对菲茨杰拉德的小说The Great Gatsby书名尝试过多种译法，其中以《了不起的盖茨比》最为流行。
用“信、达、雅”标准对《了不起的盖茨比》的译法进行重新审视，其准确性尚有可商榷之处。
《了不起的盖茨比》的译法是特定时代的产物，且“信”而不“达”，抛开意识形态的禁锢，《伟大的盖茨比》的译法更符合“信”和“达”的标准。
在众多追求“雅”译的译法中，既暗示小说内容，又呼应小说主题的《灯绿梦渺》堪称“尔雅”，充分体现了译者对整部小说的透彻理解，是译者对小说的一种高度概括和唯美诠释。

虽然译界对其理论和翻译思想争论不断，对“信、达、雅”的内容和涵义进行完善和发展，出现了诸如陈西滢的“形似、意似、神似”、钱钟书的“化境”、刘重德的“信、达、切”、许渊冲的“信、达、优”等，但归根结底，都留有“信、达、雅”的痕迹，很难割离开与“信、达、雅”千丝万缕的联系，所谓“万变不离其宗，‘信达雅’之宗”。

本文摘取了《红楼梦》译本The Dream of Red Mansion第三回中三段译文进行了分析与评鉴，讨论了译者在翻译过程中是如何遵循并运用“信、达、雅”翻译原则的。

整本书通过对一个贵族官僚家庭的盛衰历史的描叙，塑造了一系列优秀的典型人物，并对腐朽的封建社会作了深刻的解剖和强烈的批判。
它不仅有深刻的思想价值，而且具有卓越的艺术成就，被视为中国封建社会的“百科全书”。
《红楼梦》的语言达到了中国古典小说的高峰，乃至中国古代文学的高峰。
它不仅对中国文学产生了深远的影响，而且对世界文学也有着深远的影响。
《红楼梦》从成书到现在已有二百多年的历史，期间曾多次被译成外国文字，以供外国读者欣赏。
目前已有十多种外文译本和节译本，其中有一种译本影响较大。
这译本是The Dream Of Red Mansion,由杨宪益、戴乃迭夫妇翻译。
杨宪益是中国当代成就卓著的翻译家、外国文学研究家。
他的翻译思想视忠实为第一要义。
在中国，翻译实践家们历来以严复的“信达雅”为翻译标准。
严复（1854－1921）是我国近代启蒙思想家、翻译家，福建候官（今福州）人。
在1898年（光绪二十四年）创刊的《天演论∙译例言》这篇译论名作中，他提出了“信、达、雅”之说。
一、译事三难:信、达、雅。
Translation involves three requirements difficult to fulfill: faithfulness, comprehensibility, and elegance.求其信，已大难矣!顾信矣，不达，虽译，犹不译也，Faithfulness is difficult enough to attain but a translation that is faithful but not comprehensible is translation at all.则达尚焉。
Comprehensibility is therefore of prime importance.海通以来，象寄之才，随地多有；而任取一书，责其能与于斯二者，则已寡矣!Since China’s opening to foreign trade by sea, there has been no lack of interpreters and translator. But if you assign them any book to translate and tell them to meet these two requirements, few can do so.其故在浅尝一也；偏至二也，辨之者少，三也。
The reasons for their inability are:superficiality, partiality and lack of discrimination.今是书所言，本五十年来西人新得之学，又为作者晚出之书，This book is based on the new knowledge of the West acquired during the last fifty years and was one of the author’s later works.译文取明深义，My translation attempts to present its profound thought.故词句之间，时有所傎到附益、不斤斤于字比句次，It does not follow the exact order of words and sentences of the original ideas but reorganizes and elaborates.而意义则不倍本文。

信达雅理论在英汉翻译中的运用第一，信达。
信达是指翻译应该保持原文的意思和内涵。
在英汉翻译中，翻译者需要理解原文的意义，并尽可能准确地传达给目标语言读者。

第二，雅。
