Module 4 Which English Carnival(建议用时40分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AThe global population is living longer, and getting older, whichpresents new challenges. “The question becomes: who will take care ofeveryone? While people will always be the best caregivers for people, there just aren’t enough people. That’s where robotic technology canreally make a difference, ”says Professor Maja Mataric at the University of Southern California. Her group is developing robots to work with stroke(中风)patients and elderly people. The research team has found that people react well to a robot gym instructor, and seem to get less frustrated with it than with instructions given on a computer screen. The robot can act as a perfect trainer, with infinite(极大的)patience.“People say things like‘I prefer this robot to my husband! Can I take it home? ’”according to Professor Mataric. “In fact there’s a really important point here. As we create these caregiving technologies, we’re helping not only the people that need the care, but also the people caring for them. We can give them a break, and help them avoid burnout. ”People are going to have to like, and importantly trust robots before they welcome them into their homes, and several groups around the world are working on making it easier to communicate with them.Much of human communication takes place through body language. Gestures, eye contact, and concepts of personal space are all things that robots are being taught. In learning about how people interact(互动)with machines, researchers are also discovering new roles for robots in our lives. Robots can communicate with humans in ways that other technologies can not.“If someone finds the robot to be more persuasive and more reliable, that’s going to affect how they interact with it, ”says Dr Cynthia Breazeal, director ofthe Personal Robots Group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “We can now start to think about fields where it’s the social interaction, which is the main means by which a robot helps someone. ”Dr Breazeal s ays that means robots could be used in education, learning, and health care, where social support is important. 【文章大意】随着地球上的人们活的时间越来越长, 年龄越来越大, 很多问题也相继而来。

He began to think that he had no future at all.“Why don't you start your own business?” one of his uncles told him. “The world is a moneylocker. You'd better find a way of opening it.”“But what can I do?”“Get out and have a look round,” advised his uncle in a vague sort of way. “See what people want; then give it to them, and they will pay for it.”Boris began to cycle around the town and found a suitable piece of a waste ground in the end. Then he set up his business as a cycle repairer. He worked hard, made friends with his customers and gradually managed to build up his goodwill and profit.A few months later, he found that he had more work than he could deal with by himself. He found a number of empty shops but they were all no good: in the wrong position, too expensive or with some other snag (障碍). But at long last, he managed to find an empty shop on a new estate where there were plenty of customers but no competition.Boris and his assistant taught themselves how to repair scooters and motorcycles. We were planning to drive down together to North Carolina to be with my father who was badly ill.As I waited at the stoplight experiencing this forced slowdown, I noticed Sharper's Florist over to the left. It was the same place where I had experienced many things—floods of memories went through my mind as the light seemed a blessing.I noticed the wine store straight ahead where my father and I had been many times before, picking out the beer of the week. We both liked German beer. The light finally became green and I made my left turn and drove through the poor section of our hometown. I remembered how each Thanksgiving my family would be together. I also remembered how my father would take some time out of each Thanksgiving to make sure there was no one hungry in the neighborhoods surrounding where we lived. I can remember as a young boy going with him to deliver some food.I was scared. I had never been into this part of town this deeply before. My father seemed unfazed (泰然自若的) and went about his business. The people we went to help seemed to know him and gratefully accepted what he came to offer. My father seemed able to give away the food in a way that honored those he was giving to. This was not an arrogant act. He would stop at each place and talk a little, which I can remember totally pissing me off (使……厌烦). I wanted to get the hell out of there. My father wanted to be sure everyone had food. If there were people he found who didn't have food, he would take time to go back and get more. That's the kind of man he was.语篇解读:本文是一篇记叙文。

There's nothing bet ter than nodding off on the sofa in front of the TV and when m y head hits the pillow at night. I have no problem falling into a deep sleep within minutes. There is one place where I never n ap (打盹) and that's at work — but new research suggests I should! The idea of you and your colleagues heading off for lying dow n in the afternoon may seem strange, but some companies su ch as Google and Facebook actually encourage it. Because it' s thought that a powernap makes them more refreshed and m ore focused, and this in turn makes them more productive. An Australian health writer called Victoria is a founder of a ca mpaign called Nap Now which is trying to make sleeping at w ork more acceptable. She calls herself a “naptivist”! She says:“I think that our culture is a bit crazy not to accept it ... It's time to end the common work principle which is all about working l onger and harder.”So should we all be taking a sleeping bag and pillow to work with us? A few years ago, research by the East of England De velopment Agency found 30% of people have their best ideas in bed compared to just 11% who have them at their desks. T hat suggests people are more creative when they are relaxed — and the agency has called for companies to put beds in the workplace.A nap in the afternoon is nothing new. In certain hot countries, such as Spain, a short rest or sleep in the afternoon — called a siesta — is perfectly normal. So maybe we should break fro m the traditional ninetofive work culture and take up the siesta . The UK's Sleep Council claims that the ninetofive working da y does not fit into the natural sleeping pattern of the human ra ce and says that bosses need to introduce a more sleepfriend ly working day.语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。

Some of them have huge noses. They have empty cheeks and large stupidly smiling mouths. Their faces are painted red, blue, and black; some are even green. They have antlers (鹿角) on their heads and long black horsehair hanging down their backs. Who can these people be?They are not nearly as frightening as they look. They are theDelaware celebrating their form of Thanksgiving, the Festival of theCorn Goddess. They are thanking her for the harvest and asking her tosend them another good harvest next year. The faces are really masks, which are worn as part of the ceremony. In the past many Native American people made use of masks in ceremonies and celebrations. The masks varied from nation to nation, but they were most often used for religious reasons. When a nation was going to war, those going into battle would wear terrible masks to honor the god of war, whose totem (图腾) was set up in the center of the camp. All the fighters would dance in front of it.Many of the masks still exist. They are made of many different materials, but the majority are of skillfully carved wood or of animal skins. Some masks were in the forms of birds and animals, but others were in human forms. They were painted in bright colors and covered with beautiful designs. Often these included symbols for the things the people depended on for their lives, such as rain, sunlight, plants, and fire.Sometimes, people wore masks to hide their faces from the enemy. Often, we, too, wear masks to hide our feelings because we are too proud or shy to show them to others. These are not the kind of masks worn on Halloween but are the facial expressions that we expect to cover our inner thoughts. Although these_masks do not look like those of the Native Americans, perhaps our reasons for wearing them are similar.语篇解读:本文是说明文。

April 13th is Maha Songkran Day or the day to mark the end of the old year. April 14th is Wan Nao which is the day after and April 15th is Wan Thaloeng Sok when the New Year begins. At this time, people from the countries who are working in the city usually return home to celebrate the festival. The festival is also for rain because it is the hottest season in Thailand and they expect a better harvest. The Songkran celebration is rich with symbolic customs. Mornings begin with visiting local temples and offering food to the Buddhist monks (僧人). On this special occasion, performing water pouring on Buddha statues is considered a tradition for this holiday. During the festival, people who have moved away usually return home to their loved ones and elders no matter how far away they are living. As a way to show respect, younger people often practice water pouring over the palms of elders’ hands. Paying respect to ancestors is also an important part of Songkran tradition. During the festival, people also do some things such as releasing (释放) fish or birds and other animals from their cages, which shows that they try to be kind. The holiday is known for its water festival which is mostly celebrated by young people. Major streets are closed to traffic, improving the traffic conditions at the moment, and the streets are used for water fights. People, young and old, take part in this tradition by pouring water on each other. People who get wet actually don’t get furious. On the contrary, they will feel happy because they know it represents washing away of their bad luck. In addition, traditional parades are held in some places where participants are clothed in traditional Thai dress.Songkran festival is also celebrated yearly by Thai people living in foreign。
