本文简要介绍了部分语言学界关于语篇衔接与连贯的观点,以及举例说明语篇衔接与连贯在英汉翻译中的体现,最后提出在英汉翻译过程译者必须充分考虑衔接与连贯,在保持原文语篇风格的同时,尽可能地使译文流畅、自然。

关键词: 英汉翻译语篇衔接连贯一、引言众所周知,翻译的对象是原文语篇,翻译的最终产品是译文的语篇。

那么何谓语篇?语篇是指一系列连续的话段或句子构成的语言整体,在一个特定的语境中具有交际功能,表示完整语义的自然语言单位。

它可以是独白、对话(dialogue),也可以是众人交谈(multiperson interchange);也可以是文字标志(如交通标志),也可以是诗歌、小说。

它可以是讲话,也可以是文章;短者一、二句可成篇,长者洋洋万言以上(黄国文,1998:7)。

德·波格然德(De Beaugrande)和德雷斯勒(Dressler)于1976年在其《篇章语言学入门》(Introduction to Text Lingustics)一书中详细介绍了语篇语言学的七个标准:(1)衔接,(2)连贯,(3)意图性,(4)可接受性,(5)信息性,(6)情景性,(7)篇际性。

衔接与连贯是语篇分析的核心问题,在英汉翻译中,语篇衔接与连贯是否处理得当制约着翻译的成败。

本文将从语篇衔接与连贯的研究发展,以及它们在英汉翻译中的体现说明语篇衔接与连贯在英汉翻译中的重要性。

二、语篇衔接与连贯在语篇分析领域,Halliday和Hasan(1976)对英语语篇中的衔接现象所做的研究对衔接理论的发展作出了重大贡献。

Halliday(1964:303)首次将衔接划分为语法衔接和词汇衔接两大类,后来Hasan(1968)对语法衔接作了较为详尽的探讨。

一般认为,Halliday和Hasan(1976)的《英语的衔接》(Cohesion and English)一书的出版标志着衔接理论的创立,在该书中作者集中探讨了英语的五种衔接手段:(1)指称,(2)替代,(3)省略,(4)连接,(5)词汇衔接。
