The Ancient Greek Mythology,PygmalionIn ancient Greek mythology,Pygmalion was a gifted sculptor from Cyprus, who showed no interest in the local women at all,for he found them immoral.Instead,Pygmalion concentrated on his art until one day he ran across a large, perfect piece of ivory and decided to carve a beautiful woman from it.When he finished the statue,Pygmalion found the image of his ideal woman so lovely that he dressed the figure and covered her in jewels. He gave the statue a name:Galatea, which meant sleeping love.He found himself falling in love with his ideal woman,so he went to the temple of Aphrodite(the goddess of love and beauty)to beg for a wife who would be as perfect as his statue.Aphrodite was curious,so she visited the room of the sculptor while he was away and was charmed by his creation.Galatea was the image of herself.Flattered,Aphrodite brought the statue to life. When Pygmalion returned to his home,he found Galatea alive, and humbled himself at her feet.Pygmalion and Galatea got married and Pygmalion never forgot to thank Aphrodite for the gift she had given him.He and Galatea brought gifts to her temple throughout their life, and Aphrodite blessed them with happiness and love in return.[阅读障碍词]1.mythology n.神话2.sculptor n. 雕塑家3.immoral adj. 不道德的4.charm v t. 吸引,迷住5.flattered adj. 高兴的6.humble v t. 低声下气;谦逊[诱思导读]1.Why did Aphrodite decide to satisfy Pygmalion's desire?A.Because she was excited by his devotion.B.Because she was amazed at their love.C.Because Galatea was flattered by his work.D.Because Galatea was made of perfect ivory.2.What do you learn from the story?[答案] 1.C 2. 谈论;言论;评述v t.&v i. 选择下列句中词组的汉语意思terms of working ability.()2.The policemen passed themselves off as farmers and successfully arrested the murderer.()3.He stared at me in amazement for my sudden appearance.()4.Generally speaking, older people are less able to speak up for their rights.()5.They admire Mr.Li so much that they try their best to make hisacquaintance.()6.The woman in the park turned out to be a police officer in disguise.()7.The enemy troops were fleeing in all directions.()8.Put up your hand and the teacher will know you want to ask a question.[答案]1-5FBDEC6-8AHGPYGMALIONMAIN CHARACTERS:Eliza Doolittle(E):a poor flower girl who is ambitious to improve herself①Professor Higgins(H):an expert in phonetics(语音学),convinced that the quality of a person's English decides his/her position in society②Colonel[(陆军)上校] Pickering(CP):an officer in the army and later a friend of Higgins' who sets him a taskAct One FATEFUL(决定性的) MEETINGS11:15 pm in London,England in 1914 outside a theatre. It is pouring w ith rain and cab w histles(汽笛声) are blo w ing in all directions.A man is hiding from the rain listening to people's language and w atching their reactions③.While w atching④,he makes notes.Nearby a flo w er girl w earing dark garments[(一件)衣服(外套、裙、袍等)] and a w oollen(毛纺的;纯毛的)scarf is also sheltering from the rain.A gentleman(G)passes and hesitates for a moment.E:e over' ere, cap'in,and buy me flowers off a poor girl.G:I'm sorry but I haven't any change.E:I can giv' ou change, cap'in.G:(surprised)For a pound?I'm afraid I've got nothing less.E:(hopefully)Oah!Oh,do buy a flower off me,Captain.Take this for three pence.(holds up some dead flo w ers)皮格马利翁主要人物:伊莱扎·杜利特尔(简称伊):穷苦的卖花姑娘,立志要改善自己希金斯教授(简称希):一位语音学专家,坚信一个人的英语水平决定这个人的社会地位皮克林上校(简称皮):陆军军官,后来成了希金斯的朋友。
Section_ⅠWarming Up & Reading —Prereading 1.Have you ever heard of the Pygmalion effect?2.Do you want to know more about it?Please read the following passage to get the information. The Pygmalion effect refers to the concept that a person will achieve or perform as he is expected to perform, and it can have both positive, and negative effects on an individual or a group.A person expected to perform well will achieve or exceed (超越)this expectation, according to the Pygmalion effect, but a person expected to underachieve or perform poorly will also fulfill this expectation. The term “Pygmalion effect”comes from a Greek myth.According to the myth, Pygmalion was a prince of Cyprus and a sculptor who created and fell in love with an ivory statue of his ideal woman. He pleaded with the goddess Venus to give life to his creation, and she agreed.Pygmalion married his creation and they had a perfect life together. He had expected the statue to be the perfect woman, and she fulfilled his expectations when she was brought to life. Many studies have been conducted on the Pygmalion effect in the classroom.Teachers were given information that certain students in the class were more likely to excel and achieve than other members of the class. No verbal cues (暗示)were used by the teacher to inform students of the information or expectations, but students who were believed by tutors to have greater potential still showedsignificantly greater intellectual growth.Body language is just as important as verbal communication when conveying both positive and negative expectations, as is the tone of voice. The use of body language is most commonly a subconscious (潜意识的) form of communication, but it can prove to be very powerful.A student may detect that his teacher believes he will never be a high achiever and is less intelligent and capable of succeeding than other members of the class. If the child detects these negative expectations and comes to believe them, these negative expectations can remain with him for the rest of his life, trapping him in a continuous circle of the negative selffulfilling prophecy (预言).1.①Who and wh at is the man in Picture
