A Special English Lesson
I still remember that unique English lesson from my high school days. Our
creative teacher, Mrs. Wang, decided to take us outside the classroom for a
change of pace. We gathered under the shade of a large oak tree on the school
grounds, sitting in a circle on the soft grass.
Mrs. Wang began the lesson by handing out various objects - a seashell,
a pinecone, a smooth river stone, a colorful autumn leaf. She asked us to hold
the item in our hands, close our eyes, and just feel it for a few moments.
Then she instructed us to open our eyes and spend ten minutes writing a detailed
description of the object in English, focusing on engaging all five senses.
As we shared our writing with the group, it was amazing to hear the diverse
and imaginative descriptions that emerged from this simple exercise. The
seashell transported us to a sandy beach, the sound of crashing waves in our
ears and the tang of salt on our tongues. The pinecone evoked a walk through
a silent forest, the earthy scent of the trees mingling with the rough texture
in our hands.
Through this unconventional lesson, Mrs. Wang taught us the power of
observation and descriptive language. She showed us how to really notice the
world around us and capture it vividly in our writing. That day under the oak
tree, we didn't just improve our English skills - we learned to appreciate
beauty in the everyday objects we often overlook. It was truly an unforgettable learning experience.
