Unit 4 Body languageⅠ.阅读理解A(2016课标全国Ⅰ,D)The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups.Silences may be thoughtful, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap(间隙)with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person’s needs. Many Native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of communicating among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be implied(暗示) is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection.Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not interrupted too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing(治愈)value of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.1.What does the author say about silence in conversations?A.It implies anger.B.It promotes friendship.C.It is culture-specific.D.It is content-based.2.Which of the following people might regard silence as a call for careful thought?A.The Chinese.B.The French.C.The Mexicans.D.The Russians.3.What does the author advise nurses to do about silence?A.Let it continue as the patient pleases.B.Break it while treating patients.C.Evaluate its harm to patients.D.Make use of its healing effects.4.What may be the best title for the text?A.Sound and SilenceB.What It Means to Be SilentC.Silence to Native AmericansD.Speech Is Silver; Silence Is GoldBAll over the world mothers and fathers teach their children manners. Other children may have manners that are not like yours. There are all kinds of manners. Many years ago, children who had good manners were seen and not heard. They kept quite quiet if grown-ups were talking. Today, well-mannered children have more freedom.Sometimes good manners in one place are bad manners in other places.Suppose you are a visitor in the land of Mongolia. Some friends ask you to eat with them. What kind of manners do they want you to have? They want you to give a loud “burp (打嗝)” after you finish eating.Burping shows that you like your food.In some countries, if you give a lou d burp, you are told to say, “Excuse me, please.”In many places people like to eat together. But in some parts of Polynesia it is bad manners to be seen eating together. People show good manners by turning their backs to others while they eat. What are manners like in an East African town? People try not to see you. They are being polite. You may see a friend. He may not see you at all. If you are polite, you will sit down beside him. You will wait until he finishes what he is doing. Then he will talk to you.Suppose you visit a friend in Arabia. You should walk behind the other tents until you come to his tent. If you pass in front of the other tents, you will be asked into each one. People will ask you to eat with them. And it is bad manners if you say no.Manners are different all over the world. But it is good to know that all manners begin in the same way. People need ways to show that they want to be friends.5.People turn their backs to others while they eat in some places in .A.MongoliaB.an East African townC.PolynesiaD.Arabia6.In an East African town, people try not to see you. Listening well is an active exercise of our attention and hard work. It is because they do not realize this, or because they are not willing to do the work, that most people do not listen well.Listening well also requires total concentration upon someone else. An essential part of listening well i s the rule known as“bracketing”. Bracketing includes the temporary giving up or setting aside of your own prejudices and desires, to experience as far as possible someone else's world from the inside, stepping_into_his_or_her_shoes. Moreover, since listening well involves bracketing, it also involves a temporary acceptance of the other person. Sensing this acceptance, the speaker will seem quite willing to open up the inner part of his or her mind to the listener. True communication is under way. The energy required for listening well is so great that it can be accomplished only by the will to extend oneself for mutual growth. Most of the time we lack this energy. Even though we may feel in our business dealings or social relationships that we are listening well, what we are usually doing is listening selectively. Often we have a prepared list in mind and wonder, as we listen, how we can achieve certain desired results to get the conversation over as quickly as possible or redirect it in ways more satisfactory to us. Many of us are far more interested in talking than in listening, or we simply refuse to listen to what we don't want to hear.It is not until towards the end of my doctor career that I have found the knowledge that one is being truly listened to is frequently therapeutic(有疗效的). In abouta quarter of the patients I saw, surprising improvement was shown during the first few months of the psychotherapy(心理疗法), before any of the roots of problems had been uncovered or explained. There are several reasons for this phenomenon, but the chief among them, I believe, was the patient's sense that he or she was being truly listened to, often for the first time in years, and for some, perhaps for the first time ever.11.The phrase “stepping into his or her shoes” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”.A.preparing a topic list firstB.focusing on one's own mindC.directing the talk to the desired resultsD.experiencing the speaker's inside world12.What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 2?A.How to listen well.B.What to listen to.C.Benefits of listening.D.Problems in listening.13.According to the author, in communication people tend to ________.A.listen activelyB.listen purposefullyC.set aside their prejudicesD.open up their inner mind14.According to the author, the patients improved mainly because ________.A.they were taken good care ofB.they knew they were truly listened toC.they had partners to talk toD.they knew the roots of problems15.What type of writing is the article likely to be?A.A medical report. confusing it with hugge—another word of the Middle English ug,meaning “to inspire with fear or disgust”.Nevertheless,I find myself drawn to the possibility that hug does,in fact, have some connection with ug.It seems to me that at the thought of a tight embrace (拥抱),fear and disgust do come to mind.So why is it that when I go over to your house for dinner, you wrap your arms around me,even though I saw you last Friday at the movies? One arm or two?Should there be space between us?Should I brush my cheek against yours?Maybe even kiss your cheek?I’m willing to believe that some people really love to hug. They rush to enfold not only family and friends but also friends of friends and near strangers. They delight in applying pressure and rocking from side to side.Yet most people are just going through the motions;they’re looking for a way to say hello or goodbye. Not wanting to seem rude,I open my arms, too, submitting to the ceremony of friendship. After one particularly confusing interaction,I looked for advice from experts.Emily Yoffe,an advice columnist, offered her sympathy:“I’m with you on this, but I’ve become a nonhugger who hugs.Recently after breakfast with a new friend,I went in to hug her goodbye, and I could see a kind of horror in her eyes, but it was too l ate to back off.” That’s me:The girl with the look of horror in her eyes. The Emily Post Institute, which specializes in manners, explains that when greeting someone, you should look him or her in the eyes and smile, speak clearly, add a “glad to see you” and then shake hands with a firm grip, pump two or three times, and then release. The institute suggests adding a hug “if it’s a relative or close friend”.Not any specific information on what a proper hug involves. There are several hug alternatives, among them:the handshake, the cheek kiss, the wave, the arm squeeze, and the nod.Handshakes seem formal, cheek kissesunAmerican.Arm squeezing would be a good solution if it were not for the danger of getting pulled into something more fullbodied. The nod, though, can be very effective when combined with a smile, especially when executed with confidence and with one hand already grasping the door handle.1.What do the first two paragraphs indicate about “hug”?A.The word causes common disfavor.B.The behavior appears disgusting.C.The action is somewhat confusing.D.The manner is unsuitable for friends.2.About the way of embrace, the experts________.A.have a standard conceptB.feel embarrassed and uneasyC.advise people to use other waysD.fail to give an explicit definition3.What’s the author’s attitude towards hug?A.Cautious. B.Hesitant.C.Puzzled. D.Opposed.4.What does the passage mainly discuss?A.Indepth research into hug.B.Specialized opinions on daily manners.C.Appropriateness of daily manners.D.Important reform of greeting manners.Ⅵ.书面表达假如你是李华,对2013年一月出现的严重雾霾记忆犹新,认为绿色生活方式对于改善空气质量十分有益。

Who would wish me a happy birthday? I accepted and sent out friend requests without a second thought and soon accumulated 391 friends. There is an appeal to being able to communicate with someone or just “thumbs up”a photo rather than make real conversation.“It's comforting and it's easy,” said Larry Rosen, a psychology professor at California State University, who studies the way people communicate online.“There's a sense of belonging in it.It's a sense of community in a generation where community has sort of (有点儿)disappeared.”However, I don't talk to half of these people in the online community. There are some I would avoid if I met them on the street.Click.132.I decided to rid my account of any “friend” that … well, wasn't.Sound easy?
