定语从句在句中的作用相当于形容词。
被修饰的部分叫先行词，连接先行词与从句的词叫做关系词。
（1） 限制性定语从句与非限制限制性定语从句的区别定语从句分类限制性定语从句非限制性定语从句关系词关系代词who ，whom,which,that, whose关系副词when, where, why介词+关系代词介词+which/whom1.He has two sons, who work in the same company.(He has only two sons.)2.He has tow sons who work in the same company.(Perhaps he has more than two sons.)3.He failed in the match, which was a great pity.(非限制性定语从句，先行词为前面整个句子) （=He failed in the match, and it was a great pity.）(2)定语从句关系词的用法●The old man with whom I often go to the park is my grandfather.2. “whose+名词”可与“限定词+名词+of which/whom”或“of which/whom +限定词+名词”换用。

1.当主句中的主语是who时，只能用that。
eg. Who is the girl that is standing over there?2.在非限制性定语从句中以及介词后面时只能用who 或者whom。
eg. I have a son, who is really lovely and interesting.There are 40 students in the class, most of whom are boys.3.关系代词whose既能修饰人，也能修饰物，在定语从句中充当定语，修饰先行词。

who 在定语从句中作主语，宾语，表语；whom 在定语从句中作宾语。
（在现代英语中who也可代替whom在从句中作动词的宾语。
例如：①He is the man who lives next door. 他就是住在隔壁的那个男人。

定语从句
1、概念
在复合句中，修饰某一名词或代词的从句叫做定语从句。
如：A shark is an animal that lives in the sea . 其中that lives in the sea .即为定语从句。
用来修饰animal .像animal这种被修饰的词叫先行词。
2、定语从句在句中的位置、作用。
定语从句在句中的作用相当于形容词，对先行词起修饰限定作用。
定语从句一般放在所修饰的先行词的后面。
3、定语从句的使用。
1）引导定语从句的关系代词有that（指人和物）、which（指物）、who（指人在句中做主语）、whom（指人在句中做宾语）；关系副词有when ,where。
初中阶段主要掌握由关系代词引导的定语从句的用法。
如：A plane is a machine that can fly . (that 在句中作主语，引导的定语从句that can fly 修饰名词machine.)
Do you know everybody who came to the party?(who在句中作主语，引导的定语从句who came to the party修饰代词everybody)
The cars which are produced in this factory sell very well. (which 在从句中作主语，引导的定语从句which are produced in this factory修饰名词cars.)
2）当定语从句修饰的先行词是人和物时可以用关系代词来引导。
当定语从句修饰的先行词是时间和地点时可以用关系副词来引导。
that , who ,which , whom 等词在定语从句中，除了做主语外，还可以在从句中作宾语，作宾语时，这几个词可以省略。
四、注意事项
1、只能that的情况：当先行词是不定代词everything , nothing, anything , none, the one , 或表范围的形容词如all , little, few , some , any , much, 等修饰先行词时。
只能用that;当先行词被序数词、形容词最高级或the only, the very , the same, the last修饰时只能用that。
如：1）、That foreign song is the only one that I really like.
2), Much that he said was true.
2、在从句中关系代词作介词的宾语时，除了固定的动词词组中的介词只能放在原来的位置上外，其他的介词一般放在whom, which前，也可以放在原来的位置。
如：The girl whom I am looking for is my sister.(look for 属于固定词组，因此for 只能用在look的后面。
)
3、特殊疑问词为who时，定语从句的关系代词用that.
Who is the man that is playing the piano.。
