Unit 8 Adventure

Lesson 4 Journey to the Antarctic

Period 1 Reading

Topic: The race to the Pole

一. 教学材料分析:

该课将采用新课标教学理念,创造性地使用教材,对课文内容进行创造性拓展与补充,改变传统教学过于注重传授知识的倾向,采用“任务型”教学模式,将进行一次实验和探究。该课的中心话题是“奔向南极的赛跑”,内容主要涉及学生们不太熟悉的南极以及来自挪威和英国的两队探险家们的故事。该课旨在让学生了解南极的地理面貌,科学家们的探险精神,是值得我们学习的。第八单元的话题就是冒险,本课是第八单元的最后一课,是对这一单元话题的一个升华。目的是培养学生勇与探险,为科学献身的精神。课文通过故事的形式,学生阅读后要学会用英语表达自己的感受,培养英语写作的能力。

二. 教学对象分析:

以一个普通平行班为教学对象,英语基础一般,但是大部分学生的思维较为活跃、对学习很有热情,而他们的表现欲望和合作精神还是可以在平时的教学中不断提高和培养的。根据这些特点,我可以采用与新课标要求相一致的新的教学方式,即活动式的教学法,这样面向全体学生便于调动全班学生的积极性,在师生互动、生生互动中实现教学任务和目标。

三. 教学目标分析:

1 、知识目标分析。通过这课的学习,要求学生了解探险的一些词汇,如:

preparation, sledges, ski, ambition, exhausted, run out of,等等词汇。

2 、能力目标分析。帮助学生理解课文篇章结构以及对文章细节的把握,并培养学生如何阅读故事性的文章,提高学生的阅读水平和技巧,

3 、情感态度分析。通过这一课的学习,培养学生的探险精神,向成功的探险家们学习,不畏困难,勇于探索世界奥秘的精神和勇气。

1. Improve students reading skills.

2. Learn some important words or phrases from the context.

3. Write about the heroes in the story.

Teaching important points:

1. Read the text and understand it generally and in detail.

2. Practice guessing the new words from the context.

3.Write a passage or give a short speech about the two explorers.

Teaching difficult points:

1. How to get the meaning of the words or phrases from the context.

2. How to help some students use some language points freely and correctly.

3. How to help students to give a speech.

Teaching methods:

1. Skim and scan the text.

2. Develop word building skills

3. Individual pair or group work to make every student work in class.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Warm-up and lead-in

1. Warm-up: ① Show some pictures about the location, scenery and animals of the

Antarctic.

② Ask and answer: what do people do there? (pictures)

③ Common sense quiz:

a, In which polar season should you go?

b, which things should you take?

c, What difficulties will you face?

d, What will you see there?

利用图片和小测试的形式,引起学生兴趣,直观有效。

介绍比赛双方对长和对手,有效的导入本课的话题。

Step 2 Pre-reading

Guess the answers to these questions:

a, Which Pole did they race to?

b, When did they go?

c, Who reached the Pole first?

阅读之前对文章内容的预测,从而让学生带着这些问题去阅读,提高了阅读的有效性。

Step 3 While-reading

1. Fast reading: Read to check the predictions.

Ss read the text individually => check their prediction with their partners => the

teacher checks the answers.

培养学生快速阅读的能力,教会学生快速阅读的方法并实践,和搭档交换答案,增强学生的竞争意识,也活跃了课堂气氛。

2. Listening: Listen to the tape and then march the paragraphs with the headings.

Para 1-2 The preparation for their journey

Para 3-4 Reached the pole

Para 5-9 The return journey

Para 10 The news of Scott’s death.

听和读相结合,把握文章结构,总结各个部分段落大意,对文章内容有了总的了解。

3. Careful reading:

Read Para 1-2 and tell me:

What is the mark of the beginning of the race? Amundsen’s letter

What did they do during 1910-1911? Organized food bases in preparation for

their journey

Read Para 3-4:

2. Why did Amundsen succeed and Scott fail?

Amundsen succeeded because he made rapid progress because he had teams of

dogs pulling the sledges and his men were on skis.

Scott failed because he and his men had to push the sledges themselves when the

sledges broke down and the horses had difficulties with the snow and the cold. Read

Para 5-9:

1. What difficulties did they face at the beginning of the return journey?

a, They were soon exhausted.

b, They were running out of food.

c, The weather conditions were terrible.

2. What did Scott's team achieve on their way back?

On their way back, they carried 20 kilos of rocks all the way with them. These

rocks proved that at one time the Antarctic had once been covered by plants.

Read Para 10 :

1.Why did Scott and his men become heroes?

They became heroes because, although they died on the return journey, they

showed great courage all the time.

2.How did you feel after you read the story?

I was deeply impressed by their spirit of expedition. In my heart, they were very

brave and I want to be like them.

仔细阅读文章各个部分,对各个部分的阅读采用不同的任务,主要有回答问题和表格的形式。在阅读的过程中把学生分成4组,鼓励学生积极回答问题,对最快速准确回答问题的小组给予表扬,积分最高的就是本节课的冠军队伍。
