Unit18 Lesson 3 Poetry 名师教学设计
1教学目标
To enable the students to appreciate English poems from four basic aspects: rhyme,
theme, tone and image.
To let the students feel the beauty of English poetry and fall in love with it,
2学情分析
High school students are quite unfamiliar with English poetry and almost every one of
them has never read an English poem before. In this class, starting from the famous
children’s song Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star and the English translation of a
well-known Chinese poem, A Tranquil Night, I can make the students get to know
English poems and understand them easily, in turn, I guide them to appreciate an
English poem from four aspects: rhyme, them, tone and key image. Then I choose a
masterpiece in English poetry, A Red Rose for the students to appreciate. Through
appreciating the poem from the above aspects, translating the third stanza as well as
reading it aloud, the students may fall in love with English poetry as well as
promoting their understanding of Chinese and western culture.
3重点难点
The students may be not familiar with English poems and have difficulties in
understanding.

4.1.1教学活动
活动1【导入】lead-in
Greet the students.
(Good morning, boys and girls, I’m so happy to see you here. First of all, I’d like to
share a song with you. While listening, please try to catch the word missing in the
blanks.)
Play the song for the students and ask the question.
(Have you got all the words? Great! Now let’s sing it together)
Sing the song together. Then ask : 2 / 4
(Do you like the song? Of course you like it. Do you thing it’s lovely? As a matter of
fact, the lyrics of the song is from a poem for children. So it’s our topic today.
POETRY.
Now please look at the screen. Can you see the letter groups in yellow clearly? Do
you know their pronunciations? Yes, the pronunciation of the first two is /a:/, and that
of the other two is /ai/. Now pay attention, please. We call star-are and high-sky two
pairs of rhyming words. And the rhyming words usually appear at the end of the line
and there is a same pronunciation in a pair of rhyming words, such as /a:/ and /ai/,
which we call RHYMES.
活动2【讲授】How to appreciate an English poem
Alright, do you still remember the first poem you learnt? ( Maybe a Chinese poem
you learnt when you were little children.) Can you recite it?
S: …
Wow, we are so familiar with it. Can you find the rhyme in this poem? Yes, the rhyme
is…
Anyone else who wants to share? Here I’ll show you another one. Let’s read it
together.
S: …
Are you familiar with it? What’s the title? In English we call it A Tranquil Night. Can
you find the rhymes of this poem? Good! /ait/ and /raund/. What’s the poem about?
S: …
Yes, it’s about homesickness. So we can say the THEME of the poem is homesickness.
Do you understand? Now, think about this. How did Li Bai feel when he wrote this
poem? Sad. Why was he sad? Right, he was sad because he was far away from home
and missed his hometown very much. So we can say the TONE of this poem is sad
and unhappy.( Tone means the mood of the poet and the feeling expressed by the
poet). Are you clear?
S: …
Now use your imagination. Can you form a picture in your mind when reading this
poem? What is in this picture? ( What will be included in this picture?) 3 / 4
S: …
Maybe a picture like this. Right? The window, the table and the moon, which of these
will remind you of your hometown if you’re far away from home? Definitely the
moon. When the moon is full, the family members will get together. So we call the
moon KEY IMAGE in this poem.
Four Aspects
From A Tranquil Night, we know that we can appreciate a poem from four aspects.
What are they? They are rhyme, theme, tone and key image. We call them key
elements in appreciating a poem.
A Tranquil Night is just an English translation of a famous Chinese poem. Have you
ever read an English poem? No? Lucky for you, today I will share a very beautiful
English poem with you: A Red, Red Rose by Robert Burns.
活动3【活动】Appreciate A Red Rose
First, let’s just enjoy the poem by listening to the reading of the poem. While listening,
please try to get a general feeling about the poem. Ok? Now, let’s begin.
What’s your feeling about the poem? Do you think it beautiful? Of course. Can you
understand the poem well? Why? Here the poet Robert Burns has some words for
you. … Oh, that’s the reason why we cannot understand it well. But don’t worry,
let’s read and understand it together.
Here I have underlined all the Scottish and old English as well as some difficult words
and I’ve also given notes for these words. Now please read the poem by yourselves
