第二周热考话题集训——旅游与交通阅读理解ADear Jorge,Are you enjoying your break from school? My family are now in Sacramento, California. We are here paying a visit to my aunt Gloria. We have been to the California State Capitol Building, the nature center, and the zoo. I have seen many interesting things, but one stands out above the rest. This morning we drove from my aunt's home to Calistoga to see California's Old Faithful Geyser (老忠实泉). I had read about it in my book, Sightseeing in California: Where You Should Go. Y ou have probably heard of Old Faithful, the geyser farther north in Yellowstone National Park. This California geyser is sometimes called “Little Old Faithful.”When we arrived California's Old Faithful was only a calm pool of water. The geyser didn't look very deep. “What's the big deal?” I wondered. As I turned, I saw some steam rising from the water. Before I knew it, there was hot water shooting up about 60 feet into the air. We could not believe our eyes! It continued for almost three minutes.Aunt Gloria told me that the water came from an underground river. She also said that the water temperature was about 95℃. This water can sometimes shoot 170 feet into the air.My aunt said that other geysers around the world reach hotter temperatures and shoot water even higher than California's Old Faithful Geyser. I'd love to learn more about this geyser and other geysers in different countries when I get home. I'll see you soon!Your friend,Bennetto 语篇解读:本文是一封书信。

第十一周热考话题集训——学校生活阅读理解AOn a typical school night, Jilly Dos Santos was lucky if she got six hours of sleep. Even when she finished her homework early, she often didn't feel tired enough to fall asleep. So when her school board planned to change her high school's start time from 7:50 a.m. to 7:20 a.m. — a full half hour earlier — she was outraged.“I thought it was the worst idea I'd ever heard,” she says.Fired up, Jilly used social media to encourage other students to join her in speaking up at the next school board meeting, and she started an online petition (请愿), which got 200-plus signatures. Then, with the help of another student, she put up more than 100 posters on school walls and emailed teachers to spread the word. The fight was on!The good news is that Jilly wasn't alone — once she started her fight, she became part of a growing movement demanding to start school later. Now, about 43 percent of public high schools in the U.S. start school before 8:00 a.m., which is earlier than at most workplaces. One big reason schools have historically preferred early start times: They allow outdoor athletic teams to practice after school while the sun is still out.As she prepared for the school board meeting, Jilly learned all of the ways that more sleep makes for better students. At the school board meeting, Jilly shared what she had learned. “My heart beat so fast,”she admits. But her schoolmates gave her confidence.“About 30 students came to support me.”Armed with facts, Jilly explained her case convincingly.“The school board liked how I didn't get emotional and just provided evidence. When I presented, I kept thinking,‘If this were a class, what would get me an A?’ instead of ‘How loud can I yell?’”All of that hard work paid off. The school board decided that instead of making Jilly's high school's start time earlier, they would change the bus schedule and make the start time even later, at 8:55 a.m.语篇解读:本文是一篇记叙文。

This is madepossible by a built-in machine that reads and translates emotions. It'sa kind of technology that can also be useful for athletes to determinethe best state for performance. The Necomimi can be bought for $49through maker Neurosky's website.◆The ostrich pillowThere are times when you're so tired thatnothing is better than taking a short sleep. Whether it's being stuck atthe office or on a long bus ride or at the library, the pillow is designed toput the wearer in soft supportive cushioning (缓冲垫) in any resting position. After winningthe world's most famous design prize, the creators are developing anew and better model. Now the first-generation helmet is being sold at various sporting shops throughout Europe for about $500.◆The treadmill deskThe treadmill desk on sale is the perfect solution for ourincreasingly sedentary (久坐不动的) lifestyles. Recently a study foundthose who spent three hours a day on a treadmill desk becamehealthier. Still, it shouldn't be treated as a panacea for not gettingenough exercise. Another study suggests that meeting therecommended amount of physical activity requires more exercises than walking. It's also recommended that treadmill speeds should be limited to around 2 miles per hour or less to make sure they can be used safely while working.语篇解读:本文是一篇应用文。

BRobots have proven very useful in different situations. But those bots are small remote-controlled tanks with a mechanical arm, and they can get hung up on narrow stairwells (楼梯井) and are stopped by ladders. “A lot of the places where you do disaster recovery are only accessible for people,”says Marc Raibert, the president of BostonDynamics, which is providing advice and help for Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) —the scientific research department of the U.S. military (军队) —to create the most advanced robots on earth. “If you're a humanoid — a machine or creature with the appearance and qualities of a human —access can be increased and you can use available tools.” In the future DARPA hopes, a humanoid robot will be able to drive trucks, and enter power plants. That future is a long way off. Simple movements like squatting (蹲) are almost impossible for something with metal parts and skin that cannot bend, says Raibert. Still, recent progress is impressive enough that the military has begun to bet on legged bots. The Office of Naval Research is working with Virginia Tech on a humanoid firefighting robot, and Dynamics showed off two of its latest projects: Cheetah, a four-legged robot capable of running 28 miles per hour, and the Legged Squad Support System, a big and awkward headless robot funded by DARPA and the Marine Corps to help carry things in places like mountain areas.“Half the land on earth is too rough, sandy, or rocky for wheeled things,” says Raibert. “Humans and animals can go to those places. They are the only examples of successful systems that do what we're trying to do.”None of the walking robots is meant to fight. They're designed to put out fires and clean up industrial accidents. But they are all funded by the military. “I'm well aware of how the world works,” says Dennis Hong, founding director of Virginia Tech's robotics lab. “Robots for me are tools to help society, not to fight in wars. But once a technology leaves our lab, there's no way to control how people can use it.”语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。
