This ancient wall snakes over huge mountain ridges for thousands of miles across northern China. We took a cable car up to a section calledBadaling and spent a couple hours hiking along the steep stone pathways. Some parts were totally vertical and had me huffing and puffing! But the views from up there were unbelievable, looking out over the misty green mountains. The Great Wall was originally built for defense, but it must have been an incredible feat of engineering and hard work to construct such a massive series of fortifications over that harsh terrain. No wonder it's considered one of the man-made wonders of the world!We also explored some of Beijing's oldest neighborhoods called hutongs. These are narrow alleys crisscrossed with courtyard homes built in the traditional style. It was like stepping back in time wandering through the hutongs - old men sitting outside playing Chinese chess, kids running around, stores selling all kinds of random goods from buckets, and lots of appetizing smells coming from the family-run restaurants. We had some incredible Beijing cuisine like tangy hot pot, crispy peking duck, and jianbing which is an amazing egg crepe snack. Definitely some of the tastiest and most unique food I've ever had!One night, we attended a cultural show with amazing acrobatics, juggling, contortionists and plate spinning. I have no clue how they could twist and bend their bodies into those crazypositions! Another day, we visited the Beijing Zoo to see the famous pandas chomping on bamboo shoots. Those pudgy bears were so cute and lazy, just lounging around and munching away.Beijing has such a wonderful blend of the ancient and modern worlds. We saw old temples and imperial buildings from dynasties past, but also towering modern skyscrapers, huge malls, tons of lights and video boards, and a super efficient subway system. The city just kept blowing me away with new sights and sounds around every corner.I loved soaking in the culture and history, but also the energy and excitement of Beijing's growth into a major global city. There was so much more we could have explored if we had more time. From the delicious authentic food to themind-boggling historical sights to the warm and welcoming people, Beijing is an absolutely awesome place that I can't wait to visit again someday. Beijing has been around for like, a million years, so there are tons of incredible old buildings and palaces. The Forbidden City is my favorite - it used to be the home of Chinese emperors! Can you imagine living in a place with 9,999 rooms? I'd get lost every day! The halls and gardens are breathtaking with bright colors, intricate carvings, and these massive wooden pillars holding everything up. I love learning about the customs and traditions from way back when.Speaking of old stuff, Beijing has some of the craziest temples and monuments too. The Temple of Heaven is this wooden structure where emperors would pray for good harvests. The architecture looks like it's straight out of a fairytale with its blue-tiled roofs and carved dragon designs. And then there's the Bell Tower and Drum Tower that were used to tell time in ancient days before clocks and smartphones existed! It's wild to imagine what life was like back then.But Beijing isn't just about history - it's a modern, bustling city too! The streets are always buzzing with people, cars, bikes, and fascinating shops and restaurants. My parents sometimes take me to Wangfujing Street which is this huge pedestrian shopping area. You can find anything you want there - clothes, toys, books, trinkets, snacks, you name it. The food stalls are unbelievable with stuff like candied strawberry kebabs, chewy milk candy, and exotic fried snacks. It's a carnival for your tastebuds!And let me tell you about the food in Beijing - it's out of this world! I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. There's the iconic Beijing roast duck that's crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. You wrap it in a little pancake with some sauce...heaven! Then you've got the delicious Beijing noodles like zhajiangmian, which are thick, chewy noodles smothered in a savory bean sauce. Don't even get me started on the dumplings - steamed, fried, soup dumplings...I've tried them all and they're all amazing. My mouth is watering as I'm writing this!As if the sights, sounds, and flavors weren't enough, Beijing has some awesome parks and outdoor spaces too. My favorite is Beihai Park right in the city center. It has gardens, temples, bridges over lakes, and even an island! You can rent a little boatand cruise around the water if you want. It's the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle for a little while. During public holidays, the park is packed with families having picnics, flying kites, and just hanging out.
