UNIT ONETEXT ONETesco is preparing a legal battle to clear its name of involvement in the dairy price-fixing scandal that has cost consumers £270 million. Failure to prove that it had no part in collusion with other supermarkets and dairy processors may land it with a fine of at least £80 million. The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) said yesterday that Asda, Sainsbury’s and the former Safeway, plus the dairy companies Wiseman, Dairy Crest and Cheese Company, had admitted being in a cartel to fix prices for milk, butter and cheese. They were fined a total of just over £116 million as part of a leniency deal offered by the watchdog to companies that owned up quickly to anti-competitive behaviour.Officials at the OFT admitted privately that they did not think they would ever discover which company or individual had initiated the pricing formula. But the watchdog recognises that at the time supermarkets were under pressure from politicians and farmers to raise the cost of milk to save dairy farming, though it is not certain that money found its way to farmers. The OFT claimed in September that it had found evidence that the retail chains had passed future milk prices to dairy companies, which then reached a fixed price among themselves. The average cost to each household is thought to be £11.25 over 2002 and 2003. Prices went up an extra 3p on a pint of milk, 15p on a quarter of a pound of butter and 15p on a half pound of cheese. There is no direct recompense for consumers, however, and the money will go to the Treasury. The National Consumer Council gave warning that the admissions would dent consumer confidence in leading high street names and that people would become sceptical of their claims. Farmers For Action, the group of farmers that has led protests over low milk prices since 2000, is seeking legal advice on whether it can now bring a claim for compensation. The OFT investigation is continuing, however, in relation to Tesco, Morrisons and the dairy group Lactalis McLelland, and any legal action is expected to be delayed until that is completed.Tesco was defiant and said that it was preparing a robust defence of its actions. Lucy Neville-Rolfe, its executive director, said: “As we have always said, we acted independently and we did not collude with anyone. Our position is different from our competitors and we are defending our own case vigorously. Our philosophy is to give a good deal to customers.”Morrisons has supported the OFT in inquiries into the former Safeway business that it took over, but in a statement said that it was still making “strong representations”in its defence. A spokeswoman for Lactalis McLelland said that the company was “co-operating” with the OFT. Industry insiders suggested that the three companies were deliberately stalling the OFT investigation.Sainsbury’s admitted yesterday that it had agreed to pay £26 million in fines, but denied that it had sought to profiteer. Justin King, the chief executive, said he was disappointed that the company had been penalised for actions meant to help farmers but recognised the benefit of a speedy settlement. Asda declined to say how much it would pay in fines and also said that its intention had been to help farmers under severe financial pressure.1. From the first paragraph, we may infer that _____[A] Tesco is the most resolute among all the retailers to defend its reputation.[B] it is already proved that Tesco has colluded with Asda, Wiseman, Dairy Crest and Cheese Company in fixing the dairy price. [C] Tesco is offered a leniency deal of £80 million because of its quick response to the anti-competitive behaviors[D] Tesco is trying its best to prove its innocence of the scandal.2. The writer’s attitude to Tesco can be said to be _____[A] biased.[B] objective.[C] sympathetic.[D] optimistic.
How Humor Makes You Friendlier, Sexier:幽默如何使你更加有人缘且性感Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle viewed laughter as “a bodily exercise precious to health。
” But 1despite some claims to the contrary, chuckling probably has little influence on physical fitness. Laughter does 2 produce short-term changes in cardiovascular function and respiration, 3 boosting heart rate, respiratory rate and depth, as well as oxygen consumption. But because hard laughter is difficult to 4 sustain, a good guffaw is unlikely to have5 measurable cardiovascular benefits the way, say, walking or jogging does。

From the highly enlightening drawing given above, we can see clearly that in the middle of the cartoon stand a multitude of graduates, confronted with a great many choices, to name only a few, job hunting, going abroad, establishing a business, taking part in the postgraduate examination. What the cartoon is trying to inform us is quite conspicuous --- wise choice in our life is of utmost significance and benefiting us a great deal. The picture vividly delivers such a common social phenomenon that nowadays youngsters ,once graduating from universities, will be faced with a variety of options for their future. The first step usually comes with confusion and uncertainty, which makes collegestudents waste a lot of time wavering for their choices. However, as the old saying, “all roads lead to Rome”, people actually could master in every walk of life. For example, Mo Yan, a well-known Chinese writer, has just won the first Nobel Prize for China. After graduation, his career covered a wide range and he has done jobs like soldier, librarian, civil servant, etc. Never does he give up the dream of being a writer and that is what he achieves at last. Therefore, as long as we put enough efforts and passion in our plans for the future, every option could become the right path.Accordingly, it is imperative for us to take some measures to help graduates keep a clear mind and make wise choices in the life journey. It is deeply-rooted in our mind that only in this way can we realize their value of life better and can the unemployment of graduates be reduced and thus can social harmony be achieved. Dear Bob,There will be an English speech contest in Experimental Building on next Sunday. 1、The Language of MusicA painter hangs his or her finished pictures on a wall, and everyone can see it. A composer writes a work, but no one can hear it until it is performed. Professional singers and players have great responsibilities, for the composer is utterly dependent on them. A student of music needs as long and as arduous a training to become a performer as a medical student needs to become a doctor. Most training is concerned with technique, for musicians have to have the muscular proficiency of an athlete or a ballet dancer. Singers practice breathing every day, as their vocal chords would be inadequate without controlled muscular support. String players practice moving the fingers of the left hand up and down, while drawing the bow to and fro with the right arm—two entirely different movements.Singers and instruments have to be able to get every note perfectly in tune. Pianists are spared this particular anxiety, for the notes are already there, waiting for them, and it is the piano tuner’s responsibility to tune the instrument for them. But they have their own difficulties; the hammers that hit the string have to be coaxed not to sound like percussion, and each overlapping tone has to sound clear. This problem of getting clear texture is one that confronts student conductors: they have to learn to know every note of the music and how it should sound, and they have to aim at controlling these sound with fanatical but selfless authority.Technique is of no use unless it is combined with musical knowledge and understanding. Great artists are those who are so thoroughly at home in the language of music that they can enjoy performing works written in any century.

Directions:Studying the following drawing carefully and write an essay in which you should1.describe the drawings,2.interpret its meaning, and3.support your view with examples. You should write about 200 words.
It is vividly depicted in the cartoon that a striker is preparing to shoot at the goal defended by a goalkeeper on a football field. Just at such critical moment, in the goalkeeper’s mind there is a vision that he becomes a dwarf under the huge net, while the striker imagines that the goalkeeper turns out to be a giant filling up the whole goal. Obviously, both of the players have little confidence when facing challenges.Numerous cases demonstrate the crucial role of confidence in challenging situations. The story of Helen Keller is an eminent one. A serious infectious illness caused her blindness and deafness at the age of two. With the help of Anne Sullivan, her teacher and companion until Anne Sullivan’ death, Hellen Keller built her self-confidence and conquered many handicaps, becoming the first blind-deaf person to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Eventually, she achieved considerable success as a famous writer and educator. It is evident from the above story that only with strong confidence can we perform better and turn failure into victory. In order to survive and succeed in this fiercely competitive social environment, we must possess a positive attitude towards the problems confronting us. That is, we should neither underestimate our abilities nor overestimate the problems.亮点表达1.striker 前锋2.shoot at the goal 射门3.goalkeeper 守门员4.football field 足球场5.critical moment 关键时刻6.with the help of 在……

高考英语听说突破电子教材主讲:周巍欢迎使用新东方在线电子教材第一课听力实力一﹑开场(自我介绍)Hello, I’m Jack, graduated from Second Foreign Language Institute, majored in tourism English, I’m a BBC, Beijing Born Chinese, I’ve been a teacher for around two years, teaching oral English and Listening Comprehension, I enjoy teaching very much, and I am ready to put my heart and soul into teaching, through two years of teaching English, I have got many happiness and sense of achievement. Speaking good English is not a guarantee of be a good English teacher, the key words that I have practiced in teaching are Love, Patience, Passionate and Honest. now from today on I’m gonna be your listening comprehension teacher, we have altogether 5 hours, during this period of time we’re learning not only some very useful and effective techniques to crack your exam, but also some skills improve your English ability.Q/A: Now let me ask you a few questions:1)What’s my Chinese name?2)Where am I from?3)How long have I been a teacher?4)What are the key words that I practice in my teaching?★If you want to be a good talker, you should be a listener first. Stay your mind active, keep your ears open.
If you want to be a good talker, you should be a good listener first.
I’m practicing my oral English.很显然,他听成了:What are you ding?
Rome was not built in a day一样,拳不离手曲不离口,听力更要每天坚持听,养成用耳朵的习惯,保持听的状态。
Listen to the tapes, repeat what you hear and recite along with the tapes as often as possible. What kind of tapes should we listen to?
How many tapes should we listen to?
I’m running late, I’ve gotta get out of here. I don’t know what to do.
I’ve gotta do some shopping.
Wann a→want toGonna→going toGotta→got toDidja→did you口语词汇可以通过看Sit-com来积累。
《Friends》,《Prison》(2)
W: Now, can we get the computer before Wednesday?M: Well, it depends. If it’s less than 10 kilometers we can deliver them on Tuesday. But if it’s farther away, it’ll be on Thursday. Where’s your office?W: Just around the corner.Q: When can the woman get the computers?A. On TuesdayB. On WednesdayC. On Thusrday对话最末尾中的Just around the corner就是习语,意思是就在附近。
He doesn’t exercise because he likes it.Q: Does he exercise? Does he like it?
