Reading Report The Red and The BlackName: ZhangxinEnglish name: YukiStudent number: 1014120032Reading Report_____The Red and the BlackLiterature masterpieces usually mirror the culture of countries or areas in a specific period of time. By reading these masterpieces, we can enjoy the author's fluent writing styles, vivid and detailed description, which will place us in that specific period's history and culture. During the last two weeks, I read the one of the literature masterpieces which is known for all over the world named <<The Red and the Black>>, and I have been thinking it even now. This book was written by a famous French writer named Standhal in 1830. It is the most famous and popular book in his short life. It was a typical and fundamental European work of criticism and realism which was released in the 19th century. Throughout the whole book, it is fulfilled with the hero Julien's experiences and final failure during his struggling life. Especially his two love stories which incisively and vividly revealed the hideous social ethos at the beginning of 19th century. The hero Julien's character attract my attention. He was 19 when the first appearance made in the book. His silent and terrible attitude suggested a bad childhood, and this would be the origin of his spirit of resistance and treason. Julien's father's first appearance started with a yell "Come down! Bastard! " And then fought the little boy again and again. As for his two younger brothers even though not too much detailed descriptions, but the author said Julien is the only one who was beaten in the public while playing with brothers. Julien's family members should have been his first teachers. They should have told him good natures in human, the life experience, and gave him all their love. On the opposite, Julien never enjoyed warmth from family. He grew up in a mercenary and advocating violence atmosphere. He had to face cruel family members. So patience, compliance, falsehood, and resistance are his requirements to survive. I think the other important influencing factor to Julien's character is the old doctor. He brought Julien to Napoleon's face. The great general taught him how to read and write. Napoleon was his real first teacherthan his father. But stayed in the army and watched all of death and betray arethe keys that made him gradually become a sensitive, unbelieving, introspective man and intrigued his lust about the power and authority. But it is pointed out that even though I am not agree with what he aimed at, but I appreciate his ambitions and forbearance. These are the important keys to success.Which had to mention were that Julien's love stories. One was with Mrs.de Renal, who was a married woman. And the other was Mathilde. I think Julien indeed fell in love with Mrs.de Renal later, but he was only out of a kind of revengeful thought against dignitary at the very beginning. Thereby, when first seizing on Mrs.de Renal's hand, he felt that it was not the happiness out of love, but Napoleon's victory of ambition and spree. It is more like the satisfaction of retaliation. If there was much of love between Julien and Mrs.de Renal in pursuit of her, there must have been no love between Julien and Mathilde but a political game. Mathilde was a haughty and rich young girl, she was influenced by French revolution. She thought that if there would have been a new revolution the dominator of this society must be energetic young people like Julien and marring him was not only romantic but also dependable. The other way around, Julien believed that if he would have married Mathilde, he could promote his position and rapid advancement in his career and managed to cheat her love. His two relationship were all based on the power and position, so they all failed without any surprise. And the worst thing is that he had to end up his life in prison and tolerated his father's endless questions about the property. What a tragedy! God is fair to everyone. He gave you one thing and will take away another thing. Power is probably important to Julienbut what are you gonna to do with it without life? But from another perspective, I think Julien was a liberator too. Thisviewpoint may be doubted by many people, butI still believe that it was Julientwho brought freedom to such women who were being long term oppression.Chairman Mao had said that“Y ou said Julien had destroyed others’ family, even a happy family, I think this comment is not very objective. Actually, such a happy family cannot be destroyed, if it were true, it would be unhappy obviously. As every body knows that Julien was the commonest in lower class. He had ambition that changing his mortal status which prevented him from entering upper class and having highly self-development. Although his tactics seemed too harsh or, at least, aggressive, he had spared no effort to pursuit what he believes should belong to his inner heart, let alone love between Mrs.de Renal and Mathilde. And hhat causes Julien’s death was not only his immoral or illegal behaviors but also the needs of the politician’s nasty competitions for respective political profits.<<The Red and the Black>> successfully set up a typical role in its special time. Julien impressed us readers deeply. Its sharply art structure and the using of line drawing are really outstanding. Its excelle nt mind description is very admirable. I think the good literature come from the author's own life and real experience about life and society. Scandhal had a very bad childhood as Julien, and he also went to the army during the French revolution. He followed Napoleon as well. But finally, he realized that it was necessary to give up attending army and begin writing. His novels were not very popular at that time because of the dark unsteady society. But as time went by, history told people who was right and what was valuable. This book became a great masterpiece in the world.Though this book, I knew more about the 19th in France. I have realized that even the true nature of human being would lost when we face with the temptations of money, power. I began to doubt if true love exists in the world. I have to be myself no matter what I will meet, and I know my family will always be here for me.The End。
