1Lack is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity," said the American talk show host Oprah Winfrey. I've never watched her show, but when a self-made billionaire gives life advice it' s probably worth listening to.Her point is that blind luck is very rare. You may have to be lucky to find a good job these days but that does not mean you should sit at home waiting for the opportunity to come to you. If you're a Chinese, you may already be familiar with the tale of a farmer waiting by a tree stump(树桩)for a rabbit to run out and break its neck.Richard Wiseman, the UK psychologist, conducted an experiment as part of his studies. First he divided volunteers into two groups: those who said they were lucky in life and those who said they were not. He gave everyone a newspaper and asked them to look through it to count how many photographs it had inside. On average, the unlucky people took about two minutes to count the photographs while the lucky people took just seconds. Why? On the second page of the newspaper, a command, "Stop counting There are 43 photographs in this newspaper," was written in big letters. The unlucky people mostly did not spot the message. It's easy to compare this situation to a young person looking for jobs in a local paper. They might search so hard for one type of position that they miss an even better opportunity. People who are "lucky", in fact, keep an open mind and don't go through the same routine every day.I first came to China in 2002 when it was considered a rather strange thing to do, Like many foreigners, my plan was to teach English for one year. Seven years later, and still here, I've had many great opportunities such as writing for newspapers and magazines. I did not dream these would have been possible. I've also never been sick, had an accident, got into a fight or had problems with the police. Coincidence? After reading about Professor Wiseman's studies I think not.As Wiseman advises, I usually trust my own judgment. Your friends and parents may give you advice based on rational(理性)thinking, but it's important to consider how you feel about each choice you make. Your feeling acts as a warning for a potential problem. Finally, try to turn bad luck into good. Even if you do fall down and break a leg, the time spent at home can be used wisely to study English.1. What do you know about Oprah Winfrey?A. She is a good organizer of a talk show in America.B. She became famous through her family background.C. She was lucky and seldom fell flat on her face.D. She became successful entirely by her own effort.2. The writer quoted the Chinese tale of a farmer in order to show________.A. luck is in your own handB. bad luck can turn into goodC. you can't wait for an opportunityD. man can conquer nature3. From the experiment Wiseman drew the conclusion that________.A. lucky people are quick-mindedB. unlucky people are slow to readC. lucky people often have an open mindD. unlucky people are not routineers4. The underlined word "spot" is the closest in meaning to "________”.A. recognizeB. markC. makeD. receive5. Which of the following proverbs most agrees with the writer's point?A. Make the best of a bad situation.B. Rome was not built in a day.C. All is not gold that glitters.D. A good heart conquers ill fortune.【答案】1. D 2. C 3. C 4. A 5.

As I was walking around Residential care this afternoon,I heard a lot of shouting and crying coming from one of the rooms.I had actually tried to connect with this little lady a few weeks ago but she can’t speak English and has dementia A caregiver was in with her and speaking but the lady wasn’t responding。
I took the lady into the bathroom and she was crying and looking in the mirror。
To calm her down I started to brush her hair, it was all wet. The caregiver left and I grabbed a small towel and dried her hair as well as gently rubbing her head. She just kept crying and was terribly upset。
AWhat do Tom Sa w yer and Jumping Frogs have in common? Stories about both of them were created by one man: Mark Twain. Twain was four years old when his family moved to Hannibal, Missouri, located on the west bank of the Mississippi. Twain grew up there and was fascinated with (使……入迷) life along the river — the steamboats, the giant lumber (木头) rafts, and the people who worked on them. The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Cala v eras County is one of Twain's best loved short stories, and TheAd v entures of Tom Sa w yer is one of his most famous novels. Both these works are celebrated by events held during National Tom Sawyer Days, which originated in the late 1950s and became national in the 1960s. Children enter their frogs in the jumping contest during National Tom Sawyer Days. There's also a fence painting contest to see who can paint the fastest. The idea for this contest comes from a scene in Tom Sa w yer, in which Tom has been told to paint the fence in front of the house he lives in. It's a beautiful day, and he would rather be doing anything else. As his friends walk by, he makes them believe that it's fun to paint, and they join in the “fun”.By the end of the day, the fence has three coats of paint!Although the story of Tom Sawyer is a fiction (虚构的事), it's based on facts. If you go to Hannibal, you'll see the white fence, which still stands at Twain's boyhood home.1.Which of the following statements about Mark Twain is TRUE?A.He was born in Hannibal.B.He enjoyed his life in Hannibal.C.He spent most of his childhood on the Mississippi.D.He often went rafting (坐船漂流) on the Mississippi with his parents.2.National Tom Sawyer Days were created ________.A.about forty years agoB.in memory of a great writerC.shortly after Twain's deathD.to improve kids' interest in reading3.Who will win the fence painting contest?A.Bob, painting the longest.B.Julia, painting most carefully.C.Jim, painting in the newest way.D.John, painting in the shortest time.4.From the white fence at Twain's boyhood home, we know that ________.A.the story of Tom Sa w yer is based partly on Twain's experiencesB.the story of Tom Sa w yer is based totally on Twain's imaginationC.Twain's old house is painted by the fence painting competitorsD.Twain's old house is visited by people from all over the countryBDisease, poverty, hate, love —Charles Dickens' stories opened his readers' eyes to the most important themes of his age. Two hundred years later, his stories still speak volumes across the world, proving that Dickens' legacy (遗产) was far greater than just “great-literature”.February 7 marks the 200th anniversary of the writer's birthday. To mark this date, BBC writer Alex Hudson listed six things Dickens gave the modern world. Let's take a look at two of them.A White ChristmasDickens is described as “the man who invented Christmas”—not the religious festival, but the cultural aspects that we associate with the festive season today. In the early 19th century, Christmas was barely worth mentioning, according to critic and writer Leigh Hunt. The committee which ran the Conservative Party even held ordinary business meetings on Christmas Day —unthinkable in the West nowadays, when everyone but the most necessary workers takes at least three days off. Many people believe that Dickens' popular descriptions of the festive period became a blueprint for generations to come. In his classic novel, A Christmas Carol, he not only put forward the idea of snow at Christmas, but also painted a picture of glowing warmth —“home enjoyments, affections and hopes”.In his biography of Dickens, Peter Ackroyd wrote: “Dickens can be said to have almost single-handedly created the modern idea of Christmas.”“Dickensian” povertyDickens was one of the first to take an honest look at the underclass and the poor of Victorian London. He helped popularize the term “red_tape”to describe situations where people in power use needless amounts of bureaucracy (官僚作风) in a way that particularly hurts the weaker and poorer members of society.“Dickensian”has now become a powerful word for describing an unacceptable level of poverty. In 2009, when the president of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers in the UK wanted to talk about poverty in some areas of Britain, she did not use words like “terrible”or “horrific”,but rather described it as “life mirroring the times of Dickens”.5.The article is mainly about ________.A.a brief introduction to Charles DickensB.Charles Dickens' impact on the worldC.the characters in Charles Dickens' storiesD.Charles Dickens' achievements in literature6.Why is Dickens called “the man who invented Christmas”?A.Because he created both religious and cultural festival.B.Because his novels have something to do with Christmas.C.Because one of his novels helped to shape Christmas celebrations.D.Because he was the first man to have proposed celebrating Christmas.7.We can learn from the passage that ________.A.Charles Dickens' novels reflect the true life at his ageB.Dickensian is widely used to describe the ChristmasC.every person can take three days off for ChristmasD.the theme of Charles Dickens' stories is about poverty8.According to the passage the underlined phrase “red tape”refers to ________.A.rules or regulations that are required to finish a taskB.a situation where poor members of society are hurtC.conflict between people in power and weaker peopleD.pointlessly timeconsuming official proceduresCThe human brain contains 10 thousand million cells (细胞) and each of these may have a thousand connections. Such great numbers used to discourage us and cause us to stop thinking about the possibility of making a machine with humanlike ability, but now that we have grown used to moving forward at such a speed we can be less sure. Quite soon, in only 10 or 20 years, perhaps, we will be able to build a machine as complex (简单的) as the human brain, and if we can we will. It may then take us a long time to make it as intelligent as the human brain by properly programming it.I think it is certain that in decades, not centuries, machines of silicon (硅) will arise to compete with their human ancestors. In a real sense they will be able to reproduce themselves. Silicon will have ended carbon's long control. And we will no longer be able to consider ourselves to be the finest intelligence in the world. As the intelligence of robots increases and their cost goes down, we may achieve a lot with their help, first on the earth through their ability to complete any kind of work in harmful environments. In the end, deserts (沙漠) may turn into gardens. Further ahead, by a combination of the great wealth this new age will bring and the technology it will provide, the creation of a huge, man-made world in space, home to thousands or millions of people, will be within our power.9.In the author's opinion, the human brain ________.A.is complex and intelligentB.is too complex to be reproducedC.may change a lot in 10 or 20 yearsD.will soon be replaced by machines10.The underlined word “carbon” in Paragraph 2 stands for ________.A.human beings B.an old machineC.an ocean animal D.intelligent robots11.In the last paragraph, the author mainly ________.A.talks about the intelligence of robotsB.explains how to create a world in spaceC.describes what our future life might beD.shows his worry about the environment答案:语篇解读:马克·吐温(1835-1910)是美国批判现实主义文学的奠基人,世界有名的短篇小说大师。

Forget about placing an order, paying the bill online and waiting for days for it to be delivered to you. In the near future, you'll be able to get it in minutes just by hitting “print” on your puter. You might find it hard to believe that you could actually “print” an object like you would a picture. But it is not that hard to understand how it would work. Just as a traditional printer sprays (喷) ink onto paper line by line, modern 3D printers spread material onto a surface layer by layer, from the bottom to the top, gradually building up a shape.Instead of ink, the materials the 3D printer uses are mainly plastic, resin(树脂) and certain metals. The thinner each layer is—from a millimetre to less than the width of a hair—the smoother and finer the object will be.This may sound like a pletely new technology, but the truth is that 3D printing has been around since the late 1980s. Back then, it was barely affordable for most people, so few knew about it.Last year, though, saw a big change in the 3D printing industry—printers became much cheaper. For example, 10 years ago a desktop 3D printer might havecost £20, 000, while now they cost only about £1, 000, according to the BBC.Taken out of the factory and introduced to more diverse and mon uses, 3D printing can create just about anything you can think of—flutes (笛子), bikinis, jewelry, aircraft parts and even human organs. In fact, scientists from Cornell University in New York have just made an artificial ear using a 3D printer, according to Science Daily. The fake ear looks and acts exactly like a natural one. However, as 3D printing bees more mon, it may bring about certain problems—such as piracy. “Once you can download a coffee maker, or print out a new set of kitchen utensils (餐具) on your personal 3D printer, who will visit a retail (零售的) store again? ”an expert in 3D printing told Forbes News. Even more frightening, what if anyone in the world could use a 3D printer to print out a fully functioning gun?
