The unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry“Who would true valor see, let him come hither; One here will constant be come wind, come weather .There is no discouragement shall make him once relent his first avowed intent to be a pilgrim----John Bunyan, The Pilgrim’s Progress”This passage appears on the front page of the novel, maybe the author us it as the author as theprologue of the novel. When I first opened this book, read this paragraph and saw the illustration of a pair of worn-out shoes below it, I was deeply attracted by the story. The unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry tells a story about: Harold fry, 60 years old, in the winery for forty years quietly retired after sales representative, no promotion, no friends, no enemy, retired company even haven't open farewell party. He gap is deep and his wife lived in the country, calm life, couples apart, day after day.One morning, he received a letter, from twenty years did not see old friends queenie. She had cancer, and write goodbye. Under the shock and grief, Harold, I wrote on the way to send him by queenie thought of his life, after a mailbox, another more walk more far, in the end, he came to the northeast, all the way from the southwest of Britain's most across the England. 87 days, 627 miles, only by a belief that as long as he walked, the old friends will survive! This is a story of Harold distances. From the moment he steps towards, more than six hundred miles journey in parallel with him, he is traveling through the time tunnel to another. In the87 days’ long, 627 miles ‘journey, the protagonist Harold experienced a serious of events, he experienced lots of new things he had never experienced before on the road, he recalled and reflected his life on the road, he melt different kinds of people on the road. Of course, like the woman with food Harold met during the journey said to him: “You’d think walking should be the simplest thing, just a question of puttingone foot in front of the other. But it never creases to amaze me how difficult the things that are supposed to be instinctive really are”,Harold’s journey is full of innumerable trials and hardships. But, miraculously, Harold finished it at last. He beat the impossible that even himself maybe not think it is possible to finish at first. However, the ending of the novel is that Queenie still died finally. While I read the story, I felt as if I walked on the road with Harold and experienced what he had experienced too.In fact,I was not the first time to read this novel, several years ago, whenIread the novel in the Chinese version,I remember that moment when I knew the ending all I felt was disappointed, deeplydisappointed. But in this winter vacation, when I read its English version again, my feelings and emotions are totally different. The second time during my whole reading, I gain lots of new things. Like that I started to know that Queenie’s death is understandable. Actually, this is what the true life. “She had touched life, played with it a little, but it is a slippery bugger, and finally we must close the door, and leave it behind.” And also, to Harold, “Someone had come, and now they had gone.”“To have come all this way and discovered what it was you wanted, only to know that you must lose it again.”From my perspective, in fact, Everyone’s life is a lonely pilgrimagein which we will see a lot of scenery, experience different comprehension, and thenwe might be sensitized to experience gradually, life can no longer use several labels or in a few words can express. Because even if our life are small, lonely, but they are stilldeep, and are the only one.附:Extract good sentencesI like:1.You have to believe. That’s what I think. It’s not about medicine and all thatstuff. You have to believe a person can get better. Of course he couldn’t do it in yachting shoes. Of course Queenie couldn’t keep living, just because he ‘d told her to do so. Every day, the sky hung low and white, lit bya silvery spoke of sunlight.
